SXSW 2020 Online Festival is Coming To Amazon Prime For Free

SXSW is now bringing a 2020 online festival of films to Amazon Prime. Since the coronavirus pandemic has spread so fast around the world, it has led to the cancellation of large gatherings, which has ultimately hit major film studios hard due to having to delay releases because of theater closures. However, it’s also been a damaging blow to champions of independent cinema like the SXSW Festival in Texas. The annual event that allows emerging talent to showcase their films to people within the industry, and potentially get distributors on board with their projects, was canceled for the first time in 34 years on March 6. It was set to run from March 13 to March 22. However, much like the rest of the industry, the festival will now switch its focus to streaming services.

Yesterday (April 2, 2020), SXSW and Amazon Prime announced they are teaming up for “Prime Video presents the SXSW 2020 Film Festival Collection.” This is an online film festival that will stream for free across the U.S. for 10 days. No start date was announced yet, but the expectation it will be ready in late April. Filmmakers who were part of the original SXSW 2020 lineup are invited to participate in the online festival.

It’s a great outcome for so many films, and filmmakers, as it means they can potentially still receive their breakout opportunity, only without the immediate feedback of a live audience, and receive a fee for streaming their films. Although nothing can replicate the environment of a collective group of artists and audience members coming together, streaming services are proving to be saviors in this time, as they are still providing an opportunity for new films like Bloodshot and The Invisible Man to be seen by a large audience. Also, the fact people in the States do not even need Amazon Prime to view the 10-day festival, means the SXSW 2020 films could get an even larger audience.
