Sylvester Stallone Is Wrong Rocky 4 Was Right To Kill Off Apollo

Apollo Creed’s death in Rocky 4 was the right decision, regardless how Sylvester Stallone now feels about the iconic moment. Over 35 years after the release of Rocky 4, Sylvester Stallone has re-edited the film as Rocky vs. Drago: The Ultimate Director’s Cut. This new version of the film is set for a one-day release via Fathom Events and promises audiences 40 additional minutes of never-before-seen footage. It will also feature entirely re-edited fight sequences. In a recent behind-the-scenes featurette, Stallone discusses the process of re-editing the Rocky 4 as well as airs his regrets for killing off Apollo Creed.

Rocky 4 featured the first appearance of Ivan Drago as Russia’s pre-eminent boxer. In the film, Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) watches his friend Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) endure a brutal beating by the towering Russian before ultimately being put to death in the ring. Apollo’s death sends Rocky down a path of grief as he heads to Russia to seek revenge. Though the classic bout between Rocky and Drago has been hailed the Rocky franchise’s most notable film, Sylvester Stallone has never been as happy as he could be with the final product.

Looking back at Rocky 4, Stallone realizes his failings as a young director and is determined to set them right with his ultimate director’s cut. However, Apollo’s death in Rocky 4 is one regret Sylvester Stallone will be forced to live with. Fortunately, Sylvester Stallone, whether he believes it or not, was right to kill off Apollo Creed in Rocky 4. This loss forces Rocky to search within himself for the answers and rely on his own grit to overcome the obstacles that lay in his path. Furthermore, without Apollo’s death, Creed would have never happened, and Stallone would’ve forfeited the opportunity to explore a new side of his character.

Apollo Creed’s death in Rocky 4 was just as necessary as Micky’s death in Rocky 3. Both incidents forced Sylvester Stallone’s character to grow and provided to him additional fuel with which to fight. Consequently, if Stallone would not have allowed Apollo’s death, Rocky’s journey would likely not have been as compelling for audiences. While the death of principal characters is always difficult, their deaths are never in vain as they propel the narrative forward in new and unexpected ways. Apollo’s death not only changes Rocky’s arc in the franchise, but it also acts as a catalyst for an emotional response from audiences.

Micky’s death may have compelled Rocky to grow emotionally, but it was Apollo’s death that left him alone. He no longer had the support of a mentor or a friend to seek training from. Without Apollo being killed, Rocky would have perpetually had someone to fall back on. Consequently, this resulting isolation is highlighted throughout Rocky 4 and demonstrates the loss Sylvester Stallone’s character is experiencing. This loss and subsequent growth is what makes Rocky’s comeback the film stand out from the other films in the franchise.

Additionally, without Apollo Creed’s death in Rocky 4 Michael B. Jordan’s Creed would likely not exist today, and certainly not in the same way. Stallone says as much in the video discussing the director’s cut. The exceptionally well-received Creed films were able to explore an entirely new side of Rocky as he stepped into the role of Micky for Apollo Creed’s son. This new role gave Stallone the opportunity to have a heartfelt journey that audiences resonated with. There’s a reason Creed is only Stallone’s second Academy Award nomination for acting. Clearly, Rocky 4 was right to feature the death of Apollo Creed as it set the stage for powerful new stories.
