Taika Waititi Just Wanted Jeff Goldblum to Be Himself in Thor Ragnarok

Jeff Goldblum explains that his performance in Thor: Ragnarok was intentionally designed to be extremely close to his real-life persona. Thor: Ragnarok, which premiered in 2017, was the third solo-adventure for Chris Hemsworth’s hammer-wielding God of Thunder, who first entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011. The film was directed by New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi, who has returned to helm Thor: Love and Thunder, which is expected to hit theaters on July 8, 2022.

In Ragnarok, Goldblum made his MCU debut as Grandmaster, the ruler of the planet Sakaar and the brother of Benicio del Toro’s character The Collector. In the film, Grandmaster imprisons Thor and forces him to compete in a gladiator-style battle with his current champion, the Hulk. He is portrayed as a charismatic hedonist whose more overtly humorous performance ties in well with the comic sensibilities that Waititi brought to the Thor franchise.

While speaking with GQ and breaking down some of his iconic roles, Goldblum discusses how the character of Grandmaster came to be. He explains that Waititi asked him not to do “anything theatrical or cartoony.” He told Goldblum to “be contemporary” and harness part of his natural “straight behavior,” and allowed him to improvise a lot of his dialogue during filming. Read the full quote below:

I jumped on board and he said, “You know, I don’t want you to do anything theatrical or cartoony. I think who you are – kind of in your – part of your straight behavior is a little bit useful in this so-called character. I think we’ll dress you up in some way, but I think you can be contemporary and kind of a little bit in this vein that we’re talking about. And I like to improvise a lot.”

And I said, “Well, me too.” And then we got to the set and I’ll be darned if it wasn’t as much fun as I’ve ever had.

Goldblum has certainly proven himself quite capable of performing in the exact comic vein that Waititi was looking for. Recently, he has been cast in a variety of comedy parts, including the villain in this summer’s The Boss Baby: Family Business and an appearance in the upcoming Search Party season 5. What most likely captured Waititi’s attention, however, was Goldblum’s recurring role on the satirical Pacific Northwest-set sketch show Portlandia, which was created by and stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein. Between 2012 and 2018, Goldblum made appearances on eight episodes as different characters, fitting perfectly into the offbeat universe created by that series.

Although the events of Thor: Ragnarok don’t necessitate that the Grandmaster return in the MCU, Goldblum has reprised the role in the animated series What If…? and teases a Thor: Love and Thunder appearance in this interview. Rumors of that appearance began when he was spotted with Hemsworth and Waititi at a rugby game in Australia, where filming took place. However, even if Ragnarok were his only live-action performance as the Grandmaster, the combination of Waititi’s sharp directorial judgment and Goldblum’s performance have certainly made the character indelible.
