The new trailer shown during 2021’s The Game Awards for the upcoming indie game Tchia demonstrates that players can take the form of almost anything they imagine. The tropical island-themed sandbox video game is the second title from the indie developer Awaceb, based in New Caledonia. With familiar game mechanics like gliding, Tchia has been compared to AAA video games with an open world feel like Breath of the Wild. Now a new trailer has once again sparked interest in the video game.

Another interesting game mechanic in Tchia allows the player to play a ukulele. Using the controls, the player can select chords with their cursor to create a song. As they play through the game, players can unlock new melodies that will be useful on their adventure, affecting the world of the game in different ways. Tchia can attract animals and even evoke rainfall by strumming certain melodies on the ukulele. In September of this year, it was suggested that Tchia’s ukulele gameplay was designed in a similar manner as the guitar gameplay mechanic in The Last of Us Part II. The composer of Tchia later explained that the developers at Aweceb designed the ukulele music control system before The Last of Us Part II even showcased it. Therefore, Tchia’s playable ukulele was not inspired by The Last of Us Part II.

As revealed in 2021’s The Game Awards, the newest trailer for Tchia, courtesy of PlayStation, showcases gameplay where the player can take control of any object or animal in the game. The trailer first shows the titular character steering a raft, climbing the face of a cliff, making a lantern explode to reveal a hidden cave with a treasure chest, and gliding across the landscape. The gameplay also showcases the main character using a mystical green light to take control of a flying bird, a mechanic that has been showcased in earlier trailers. The new footage proves that this magical power is not limited to living things, however. Tchia can also be seen embodying a lantern. This is similar to Cappy’s capture mechanism in Super Mario Odyssey.

Though this new trailer confirms fans’ theories that players can control the objects and animals around them, the trailer also delves deeper into its cultural influence. Tchia has been described by Awaceb as a game inspired by the region of New Caledonia. With the game’s tropical plants and animals, the cultural influence of New Caledonia is obvious. In addition to the native life, the music and even the language spoken by the characters remain true to the game’s New Caledonia roots. Voiced by locals, the main characters speak traditional languages with subtitles so that players of diverse backgrounds can understand what is being said.

Based off of this trailer and footage that has come before, fans can get a good idea of what to expect from Tchia, and can also see that the developers seem to have kept the theme of their home at the center of the game. Tchia does not have an exact launch date just yet, but the recent trailer has confirmed that it will be released in Spring 2022. Fans of indie games and New Caledonian people will likely be delighted that the game will be launching before too long.
