Team Fortress 2 Is Giving Players Malware, Apparently
Team Fortress 2 players may be at great risk of malicious entities accessing their computers after a developer purposefully leaked Valve source code.

Players of Valve’s Team Fortress 2 (TF2) may be in grave danger of having their computer systems infected with malicious software. When it comes to TF2 creators, the developer community has always taken advantage of the game’s accessibility. For years, programmers found ways to pick apart game files, resulting in customizable heads-up displays and insane, ridiculous mods. Being able to strip down Valve’s beloved shooter to its bare bones has given developers the opportunity to learn and create.
In May of 2018, a disgruntled Lever Softworks developer called Maxxx illegally released licensed Valve source code for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO) and TF2. The code dates back to CSGO’s Operation Hydra from 2017 and TF2‘s last major update, Jungle Inferno, also released in the same year. The entirety of the games’ code, alongside an unreleased source mod, were packaged inside a downloadable torrent and uploaded online. Until recently, there had been no repercussions as a result of the source code’s leak.
According to TechRadar, the source code has now made TF2 users susceptible to dangerous malware via a Remote Code Execution (RCE). RCE’s allow third parties to remotely access another person’s computer without their consent. The attacker then has complete access to the computer and can perform any activity through the software. Well-known CSGO and TF2 community computer programmer 2Eggs urged players on Twitter recently to stay away from opening TF2, as loading the game makes any computer vulnerable to having the RCE loaded onto their machine.
Advice from me for now: 1) DO NOT PLAY @TeamFortress RIGHT NOW, THERE’S SOME RCE EXPLOITS IN THE ENGINE THAT COULD ALLOW MALICIOUS CODE TO RUN RIGHT NOW 2) Be wary of what you do atm, until there’s any official response from Valve, take everything with a grain of salt.

Screenshots and videos uploaded to Reddit supposedly showing alerts popping up on players’ screens are rumored to be fake. Furthermore, recent updates from the programming community say that after monitoring the game’s state there doesn’t seem to be an active RCE. Fortunately, an official spokesperson from CSGO took to Twitter (above) assuring the community it’s completely safe to play on official servers. According to their statement, the team has reviewed the CSGO source code and reported they haven’t identified any further risks. Likewise, competitive hubs such as FaceIt and ESEA are also safe for users to play on.
2Eggs and other community developers emphasize the source code is still leaked, and the team behind Team Fortress 2 has yet to make a statement. As a result, TF2 players may still be at risk and should be wary. The best thing players can do right now to make sure their machines are safe is to not play Team Fortress 2 and wait until the developers announce that all is clear.
