Ted Lasso The 10 Funniest Running Gags

With 20 Emmy nominations and 7 wins, it’s safe to say that Ted Lasso is Apple TV+’s most successful and popular comedy series of all time. The hilarious sports series even got audiences to wait patiently week after week for new episodes instead of the usual binging method, making each new episode release exciting and more fun.

Though the 2nd season was a bit more dramatic, with characters going through various internal struggles including romances and betrayals, the series never lost its humor. In fact, season 2 of Ted Lasso reminded us all that humor sometimes stems from the dark moments in life. Not only were both seasons full of jokes, but the series already has a stream of running gags that never fail to make audiences laugh.

10 Roy’s Obsessive Swearing

Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) quickly became one of the best characters in Ted Lasso because of his grumpy yet charming disposition. While it might have seemed liked Roy was going to be the villain, his goofy side quickly came out which included his excessive need to swear.

Swearing might not be the funniest thing, but the way Roy does it make it comical. From dropping f-bombs on national TV to regularly swearing in front of his young niece he always seems to do it at the most inappropriate times.

9 “Us-ie” Instead Of Selfie

Ted Lasso has a slew of hilarious minor characters who make appearances throughout the series. One of those characters is the “us-ie” guy. He makes his first appearance in the pilot episode of the series when he stops Ted to take an “us-ie,” a selfie with other people, with him while on the plane to London.

This could have been a one-off joke but the writers saw the comedy in his character and decided to have him return. The “us-ie” guy makes two more appearances — one when he asks Jamie for an “us-ie” in a barbershop and another in the great Christmas-themed episode when he asks Keeley for one.

8 Higgin’s Make-Shift Offices

It might seem odd for a comedy to have a comic relief character, but that’s precisely what Higgins (Jeremy Swift) is — at least most of the time. In season 2, Higgin’s comic relief status becomes even more evident when he gives up his office space for Dr. Sharon (Sarah Niles). Now without an office, Higgins spends the reason of season 2 creating make-shift offices wherever he can.

He starts with a small end table in Rebecca’s room before moving to the gym attached to the locker room and finally a supply closet by the end of the season. Not only are the locations hilarious, but it’s also hilarious watching him juggle his laptop and plant from place to place.

7 “Football Is Life”

Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernández) joined the cast of Ted Lasso halfway through season 1 and became a prominent character in season 2. While Dani Rojas is hilarious in his own right, especially when he’s forced into dress shoes during the funeral episode, he also is the source of one of the show’s best running jokes.

When fans first meet Dani Rojas, he runs onto the pitch shouting, “football is life.” His life motto continues from then on, and it’s rare to see Dani onscreen without him uttering his famous and hilarious phrase. Dani’s motto also serves as a rallying cry for the other players when they are depressed after a loss.

6 The Whistles

Whistles might not be the most exciting prop on most television shows, but for Ted Lasso, they prove to be quite hilarious. The whistle gags first begin with Nate (Nick Mohammed) at the end of season 1 when he is prompted to a coaching position and gets awarded a whistle. Nate proceeds to blow the whistle in the crowded room, upsetting everyone. It’s a gag that continues until he eventually loses whistle privileges.

When Roy joins the coaching team, he has his own issue with whistles: he doesn’t use them. However, instead of finding another noisemaker to get the team’s attention, he simply yells “whistle,” which is even more hilarious.

5 Trent Crimm: The Independent

While Trent Crimm (James Lance) might not seem like the funniest character in Ted Lasso, he does have a running gag of his own. As a serious journalist, Trent regularly introduces himself during press conferences using his full name, followed by the name of the publication he works for. Thus, “Trent Crimm, The Independent” became a hilarious catchphrase for him that initially revealed the character’s large ego and smug demeanor.

The slogan even got its own pun at the end of season 2 when Trent gets fired from his job and becomes an independent journalist without a company, thus marking a subtle yet important change in the character. No longer tied to an institution, Trent is less haughty and more accepting of the subjects he interviews.

4 The “Believe” Sign

Some of the best running gags on Ted Lasso aren’t even that funny but rather serve a more emotional purpose. That’s the case with Ted’s “Believe” sign. One of the first things Ted does when he arrives in Richmond is hang up his “Believe” sign above his office door to remind the team that believing in themselves is the most important thing.

The team might start out thinking Ted’s sign is stupid, but they quickly learn to respect it. By the end of season 2, they’ve fully embraced the sign, and all go to touch it before walking out onto the pitch. It’s a scene that’s reminiscent of another emotional moment in the iconic sports show Friday Night Lights.

3 Ted’s Lack Of Knowledge About The U.K./Football

One of the best running gags on Ted Lasso stems from Ted’s (Jason Sudeikis) general character personality. Despite being hired to coach football in England, Ted knows nothing about the sport. He doesn’t even know much about England, which just adds to the “fish out of water” element in the Apple+ comedy.

From regularly referring to things by the wrong name (field instead of pitch) to constantly being confused at games to the point of asking the referees and his assistant coaches to explain things to him, Ted’s confusion is a constant and hilarious source of comedy for the series.

2 Ted’s Army Men

Another emotional running gag for Ted Lasso revolves around small, green Army men toys. The toy is first introduced in the pilot when Ted reveals that his son sent him to England with his own bag of army men toys to keep him company. Ted decides to share the love and hands them out to his players and even Rebecca when he feels like they need a small pick-me-up.

Not only is the sentiment heartfelt it does lead to comedy on several occasions. When Ted gives Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) one, Sam is appreciative but declines because of what the U.S. military means for him. In season 2, the army men resurface in another hilarious interaction when Dr. Sharon finds one in her beer while out to drink with Ted.

1 Biscuits With The Boss

Despite hiring Ted to coach, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) isn’t that fond of him at the start of season 1. Determined to get her on his side, Ted starts baking her biscuits from scratch, which he delivers to her every morning. The gesture works, and Rebecca quickly warms up to Ted by way of his biscuits.

The biscuits serve as two running gags in one since the quality of the cookies becomes a joke in season 2 when Ted makes a bad batch. It also sets up Ted and Rebecca’s daily “biscuits with the boss” meetings which can be professional or personal as they lean on each other for support.
