Teen Titans Go! reimagined the teenage superhero team for a new generation and put a new spin on their heroic antics, choosing to focus on comedy and poking fun at superheroes. The series features appearances and cameos from characters from all corners of the DC universe, making good use of the expansive comic book world.

But beyond the obvious, every episode features a smorgasbord of hidden jokes, and eagle-eyed viewers will notice many background jokes and references that will leave any comic book fan in stitches. With this in mind here are the 10 best background jokes that you never noticed.

10 A Death In The Family

When Robin was tasked with looking after the Batcave when Batman was out of town he, of course, brought all his friends along with him. Batman’s secret hideout is filled with background jokes that many viewers will miss, including Hush bandages, Scarface, and other mementos and references to his iconic rogue’s gallery.

However, the best and darkest is an urn presumably containing the ashes of a former Robin which is kept on a shelf and remains unacknowledged by The Titans.

9 So Many Aquaman Jokes

Aquaman has been the butt of many jokes over his crime-fighting career, and although those days may be behind him now, Teen Titans Go! wasn’t afraid to continue this trend.

These jokes are scattered throughout the series and poke fun at Aquaman featuring him in adverts for the local aquarium and even an ad offering swimming lessons alongside the king of the deep himself. To be fair though Teen Titan Go! makes fun of just about every superhero DC has in its roster, including themselves.

8 Steven Universe Fan Art

The Teen Titans’ 200th episode saw them forced to literally step through the fourth wall and enter our world, this led to them meeting the very people behind the show’s creation. The strange and surreal episode features some of the most bizarre and hilarious jokes in the series and many background gags.

The Teen Titans are confronted will a wall of art from their admirers’, there’s so much it’s easy to miss a drawing which reimagines The Titans as Steven Universe characters.

7 Superman

Nicolas Cage lent his distinctive voice to Superman in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, however, his inclusion in the movie is itself a callback that many younger viewers may miss.

This is because Cage was set to play the iconic hero in the ill-fated Superman movie directed by Tim Buton, who had great success reimaging Batman. While Superman’s inclusion in the animated film was small it fun to see Cage finally step into the blue spandex as he is a huge fan of the character, even naming his son Kal-El after him.

6 Detective Chimp Movie

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies marked the big-screen debut of the teenage superhero team, but that didn’t mean they weren’t afraid to poke fun at other recent DC movies. Many superheroes have movies, even the obscure primate sleuth Detective Chimp, who features in Detective Chimp and the Case of the Missing Mustache.

While the idea of Detective Chimp is amusing enough this background gag is a clear reference to Superman’s poorly digitally removed mustache from the infamous Justice League Movie.

5 Suicide Squad

Halloween is one of The Teen Titans’ favorite holidays and everyone gets into the spooky spirit of the season. They enter into a costume contest and begin to brainstorm ideas for their group costume, there are a few ideas that Robin pitches including The Wizard of Oz and Scooby-Doo.

Last but by no means least he suggests the idea of them dressing up as The Suicide Squad. These pitches come fast and are easily missed but their depiction as the villainous group will no doubt make any fan of the movie laugh.

4 Deadman

You never know what you’re going to find when you go snooping around someone’s bedroom. Robin got the fright of his life when he decided to check under Starfire’s bed, and found a dead man under there.

The high-collared costume and large D emblem on his chest make this corpse none other than Deadman, the DC superhero with the ghostly power to possess anyone. What he’s doing and how he died remains unclear but it’s a fun morbid reference to the character.

3 Swear To Read

Beast Boy became the laughing stock of the team due to his stupidity, this led him to try and became more intelligent to earnt he respect of his teammates, and of course, the first place he went to was the library.

Batman features on a poster in the background forcefully proclaiming swear to read! to everyone visiting the library. This calls back to Batman’s ruthless interrogation during Batman Begins, in which he interrogates a corrupt cop and yells swear to me!

2 Doomsday Clock

The Batcave is a treasure trove of easter eggs and in-jokes that will please any fan of the original comics, one of the most unexpected references was the iconic button featured in Watchmen.

The inclusion of the button is a fun call-back but also suggests that The Watchmen exist in the series and could very well make an appearance in the future. The appearance of the button predated the Doomsday Clock comic which served as a sequel to Watchmen and introduced to characters into main continuity.

1 Bane Bear

Starfire’s room features its fair share of background jokes and easter eggs, but her collection of stuffed animals is by the funniest and features classic DC characters reimagined as fluffy animals.

Some of these make sense, such as Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, but Bane’s inclusion stands out the most. From the bears mask it’s also clear that this is the same Bane that featured in The Dark Knight Rises, which only makes it funnier.
