Teen Wolf Dylan O’Brien Thinks Stiles Would Take Over As Sheriff

Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien thinks Stiles would take over as the Sheriff of Beacon Hills. O’Brien has maintained a busy schedule since Teen Wolf concluded its run on MTV back in 2017. The actor has several movies slated for release, including Monster Problems, Infinite, and The Education of Fredrick Fitzell. O’Brien recently went viral as well for his pitch-perfect recreation of Andrew Garfield’s climatic scene in The Social Network.

O’Brien remains best known for playing Stiles Stilinski in Teen Wolf. For his portrayal of the geeky best friend, O’Brien initially drew comparisons to similar characters in other teen series like Xander Harris from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The OC’s Seth Cohen. O’Brien quickly made the role his own though, imbuing Stiles with complexity and delivering a slew of memorable performances. O’Brien’s time on Teen Wolf opened the door for him to lead The Maze Runner movie franchise, in addition to headlining the action thriller American Assassin.

O’Brien’s fondness for Stiles came through during the recent Teen Wolf virtual reunion which streamed on MTV’s YouTube channel. Among many other questions and revelations, cast members were asked about what their characters might have been up to in the years since the show concluded. For his part, after seeking the permission of his on-screen dad Linden Ashby, O’Brien revealed that he had a specific vision for Stiles which included becoming the new sheriff of Beacon Hills. O’Brien’s comments have been transcribed below.

“I’ve been thinking during this, and I would like for him to have like, taken over as Sheriff. Linden, I mean, if you’re cool with being retired at this point. It hasn’t been that long. […] Alright, so I relieved my dad. I like the fact that I took over the Sheriff spot for Beacon Hills. And I refuse to drive a squad car, I drive a jeep. Yeah, and me and Tyler are stepbrothers, and that’s what we always wanted to be.”

For the most part, the Teen Wolf cast had contemplative and applicable answers regarding the lives of their characters today. O’Brien’s response, in particular, supports the general tendency of reboots and revivals to place the protagonists of the original series in mentorship roles. Hulu’s limited run of Veronica Mars, for example, managed to keep the focus on the main character, while also devoting plenty of screen time to scenes of Veronica acting as a mentor to a potential successor. To the delight of Teen Wolf fans, many of whom have been hoping for the show’s revival, O’Brien’s thoughts about where Stiles might be today could easily provide one of the main plot points for a hypothetical Teen Wolf season 7. Stiles and Scott remaining close would delight viewers, while the challenge of being a sheriff provides ample opportunity for drama.

On the other hand, resurrecting popular shows has led to mixed results. Even the most positive examples of a revival have had problems. The brief comeback for Will & Grace was successful overall, though it failed to garner the same attention as its first run. The new batch of episodes also contained glaring instances in which the sitcom’s formula failed to keep up with societal change. The same is true of Veronica Mars. The noir’s Hulu return earned strong reviews, but also drew the ire of audiences for the decision to kill off Logan Echolls. Teen Wolf could be revived, even if series creator Jeff Davis won’t write it, but there is precedent to suggest that it might be better to stick to the show’s original ending.
