That 70s Show 5 Reasons Red Forman Is The Scariest Sitcom Dad (& 5 Reasons Hes Not)

Family seems to be an extremely prevalent theme in the world of sitcoms. It makes sense since it’s a relatable topic for most people around the world, but the quality and temperament of sitcom parents varies wildly from show to show. Take the goofy but supportive Phil Dunphy from Modern Family, for instance and compare him to the selfish and morally reprehensible Frank Reynolds from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Red Forman of That ’70s Show fame, however, stands out as one of the most memorable sitcom fathers of all time. While he’s undeniably a good father in the grand scheme of things, he’s also the kind of strict, stern dad you’d be scared to have as a kid. Here are five reasons Red Forman is the scariest sitcom father ever – as well as five reasons he isn’t.

10 Scary: He Has Anger Issues

There’s no question that Red Forman has some serious anger issues. Sure, it’s not exactly like he’s getting into violent confrontations every day or taking out his anger in any physical capacity – but he definitely has an issue with keeping his cool.

Little things annoy Red much more than they should. Eric talking about his favorite ice cream flavor, for instance. Everybody knows that one person who gets worked up way too easily, and they’re just no fun to be around. At least Red still has his razor-sharp wit to fall back on, though.

9 Not Scary: He’ll Occasionally Let Loose

Over the course of That ’70s Show, Red Forman developed something of a reputation for being a no-nonsense kind of father, with the show’s central teenagers constantly worried that Red will swing by and put an end to their fun just for the hell of it.

On occasion though, Red’s been known to let loose and enjoy himself. Whether it’s marveling over Star Wars at his local theater, getting drunk at a bar, or accidentally ingesting some unsavory brownies, Red may be strict, but he also knows how to enjoy himself.

8 Scary: He’s a Real Disciplinarian

Red Forman does not mess around when it comes to rules. Should Eric step out of line even a little, Red’s sure to come down on him like a ton of bricks, dishing out harsh punishment after harsh punishment over the course of the show.

Luckily, Red never goes too far with this, but he won’t think twice about taking away Eric’s car, implementing an over-the-top curfew, putting him to work, or even charging him a fine. Perhaps his most famous punishment is making Eric smoke a whole pack of cigarettes – which is admittedly a little overboard. When the cops of Point Place say they feel sorry for Eric for having Red as a father, you know it must be bad.

7 Not Scary: He Dotes on His Wife and Daughter

As cold as Red may seem to Eric most of the time, he’s actually an incredibly doting father to his daughter, Laurie, showering her with love and affection. While Eric and Kitty see right through Laurie’s innocent girl act (she’s somewhat morally reprehensible in actuality), Red is too blinded by his love for Laurie to see it.

Red is also incredibly loyal to his wife, Kitty. While he doesn’t always show it in the most clear-cut way, the man would – and does – do anything for her – taking her on romantic dates, inviting the neighbors over against his will, and burning the candle at both ends when it comes to work.

6 Scary: He’ll Threaten You Physically

Imagine visiting a friend’s house as a teenager and having their father threaten to put their foot in your ass. This is what the teenagers of Point Place deal with on a daily basis. Sure, the gang has usually done something stupid to warrant such a threat, but it’s intimidating nonetheless.

In fact, getting creative with his physical threats seems to be one of Red’s favorite pastimes, with Eric usually being Red’s target of choice. Fortunately, things never actually get physical, but the threat is still enough to make Red one hell of an imposing father.

5 Not Scary: He Lets the Kids Take Over the Basement

Although he often expresses annoyance about his house – and more specifically his basement – being littered with teenagers, Red must enjoy it on some level. After all, despite all the idiotic things Eric, Donna, Kelso, Fez, Hyde, and Jackie have done at the Forman household over the years, he still lets them stay – even after Eric moves to Africa.

Simply put, given how unapologetically strict Red Forman is when it comes to the rules, there’s no way he’d have a house full of teenagers if he really didn’t want to – meaning on some level he probably does.

4 Scary: He’s Sneaky and Stubborn

One of Red’s most underappreciated qualities is how sneakily he operates. Many of the gang’s antics over the years have been busted by Red, who always seems to be one step ahead of the unfortunate group of teenagers. Red even manages to surreptitiously win a bet against Hyde that Jackie and Kelso would fight – using the name RF to hide his identity.

Combine this with the fact that Red is extremely stubborn, and it becomes clear that Red is unstoppable once he’s on the warpath – an essential component for any scary parental figure.

3 Not Scary: He Acts as a Surrogate Father

Although he may be a firm advocate of the ‘tough love’ approach, Red Forman is by no means heartless. In fact, as well as raising two kids of his own, Red even took on the troubled Hyde, letting him live in the basement and attempting to steer him down the right path.

While the relationship between Red and Hyde is amongst the show’s most heart-warming, Red looks after the other teens, too. He’s often seen dispensing advice to the other kids, most famously taking a shine to Jackie after she’s able to help him work on his car – with Jackie coming to see him as something of a surrogate father figure.

2 Scary: He Can Be Emotionally Abusive

As good as Red’s intentions might be when it comes to raising his son, it’s likely that his constant verbal teardowns of Eric may be doing more harm than good. Often calling Eric stupid, decrying his lack of manliness, and insulting his physical appearance, Red’s style of fathering is old fashioned even by ’70s standards.

It makes sense of course – after all, Red is a Korean war veteran – but it’s also not hard to see why Eric can be an overthinking, neurotic mess at times, given Red’s constant and usually harsh criticism.

1 Not Scary: He’s Ultimately Supportive

When it comes down to it, Red Forman is ultimately a loving and supportive father. While he has trouble emoting much of the time, Red always has the best interests of Eric – as well as his friends – at heart.

He celebrates Eric’s work ethic when he begins a job at Price Mart, comforts him after his grandmother’s unfortunate death, and even supports his decision to move to Africa. He may not be the easiest man to live with, but there’s no doubt that Red Forman is still a great sitcom father – even if he is a little scary.
