The film studio A24 has become a leading force in the independent movie scene, producing and distributing a variety of projects since its 2012 founding. From heart-wrenching Oscar winners like Moonlight to indie horror hits like Midsommar, A24 has gained a dedicated fanbase made up of hardcore cinephiles and casual movie fans alike, and it’s new and upcoming releases are highly anticipated.

10 Hereditary (2018) – 4.00

2018’s Hereditary uses its central characters, the Graham family, to explore the complexities of generational trauma. Ari Aster’s feature film directorial debut became one of the most talked-about horror movies of the 2010s, and A24’s highest-grossing film worldwide.

The acclaimed psychological thriller features standout performances by Toni Collette, Milly Shapiro, and Alex Wolff, and a campaign to get Collette an Oscar nomination started soon after Hereditary hit theaters. While she didn’t get a chance to compete for the statuette, Collette’s performance has been heralded as one of her best, and Hereditary has become A24’s most popular horror film.

9 Room (2015) – 4.01

Captain Marvel herself, Brie Larson won an Oscar for her leading role in 2015’s Room. She plays Joy Newsome, also known as Ma, a young mother held in captivity by a man called “Old Nick.” A magnetic Jacob Trembley plays her son who has only known the world within the small shed they call Room.

The two plan their escape so the curious Jack can experience the world outside of Room and have a real childhood. Room is raw, emotional, and filled to the brim with powerful performances. Larson’s Ma goes through many ups and downs after her escape, but it’s the love and care of her son that ground her time and time again.

8 The Souvenir Part II (2021) – 4.04

The Souvenir Part II, Joanna Hogg’s sequel to her 2019 semi-autobiographical drama The Souvenir, follows Honor Swinton Byrne’s Julie as she navigates the aftermath of her relationship with an older man. As a film student, Julie uses her graduation film as a means of distraction from her grief.

One of the newest A24 releases in the top 10, The Souvenir Part II is an impressive follow-up to Hogg’s first film and feels like a justified sequel. The incredible work of the cast, including the mother-daughter duo of Byrne and Tilda Swinton, has received praise from critics and audiences alike.

7 The Lighthouse (2019) – 4.05

Robert Eggers followed his acclaimed period horror film The Witch up with 1890s-set The Lighthouse, a psychological horror film centered around two lighthouse keepers trying to maintain their sanity after a storm traps them on the remote New England island they work on.

The film stars Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, two perfectly paired actors who venture down the rabbit hole of madness Eggers has created. The film’s black-and-white cinematography is striking, receiving a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

6 The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019) – 4.05

Joe Talbot’s The Last Black Man in San Francisco centers around Jimmie Fails, a Black man who tries to reclaim his childhood home in one of the city’s gentrified neighborhoods. Fails’ life is one of the bases of the story and he plays a fictionalized version of himself in the film.

Featuring heavy hitters like the legendary Danny Glover and Loki’s Jonathan Majors on the cusp of his meteoric rise in Hollywood, The Last Black Man in San Francisco is one of A24’s truly underrated, but still dazzling, gems.

5 The Farewell (2019) – 4.06

The Farewell, Lulu Wang’s family dramedy, was one of the best films in 2019. Comedian Awkwafina takes on the more serious role of Billi Wang, a Chinese-American woman who returns to China with her family upon the news of her grandmother having a terminal illness.

The family decides to keep Nai Nai in the dark about her diagnosis and host a spur-of-the-moment wedding to have the family all together one last time. These choices, and the sudden mortality of her grandmother, cause Billi to struggle with her emotions. A realistic film about the complexities of familial love, The Farewell won a Golden Globe and two Independent Spirit Awards.

4 The Florida Project (2017) – 4.10

2017’s The Florida Project, Sean Baker’s poignant slice-of-life drama, follows 6-year-old Moonee and her young mother, Halley, as they try to make a Florida motel their home. Moonee spends her summer break going on adventures with her friends while Halley struggles to make ends meet.

Brooklynn Prince makes an impactful screen debut, her performance as the rambunctious Moonee helping her win the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer at age 7. Willem Dafoe was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards for his role as Bobby, the hotel manager who is protective of the kids and Halley. Bobby is one of Dafoe’s best roles, and one of the more heartwarming.

3 Minari (2020) – 4.11

Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-autobiographical film Minari follows the Yis after the patriarch, Jacob, moves the family from California to rural Arkansas to chase his dream of owning a farm. The immigrant family must adapt to their new way of life, and the arrival of Soon-ja, Jacob’s mother-in-law, from Korea shakes things up.

Soon-ja is just as troublesome as her young grandson, David, and the two often butt heads before slowly growing close. The relationship between the two, as well as the marriage between Jacob and Monica, both become the heart of Minari. A beautiful new take on the American Dream, Minari has become one of A24’s most beloved films in such a short amount of time.

2 Moonlight (2016) – 4.21

Director Barry Jenkins’ coming-of-age drama Moonlight follows Chiron throughout three defining chapters of his life. The young man struggles to find himself and come to terms with his sexuality while trying to survive his adolescence in Miami. The three actors playing Chiron (Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders and Alex Hibbert) perfectly embody the character, creating a cohesive portrayal of his journey from a young child into a hardened adult.

Moonlight became the first A24 film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Mahershala Ali won his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Juan, a drug dealer who becomes a father figure to Chiron. For Moonlight, Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

1 C’mon C’mon (2021) – 4.21

Mike Mills’ drama C’mon C’mon won the title of the highest-rated A24 film on Letterboxd. The recently-released film centers around Joaquin Phoenix’s Johnny, a radio journalist whose current project involves interviewing gifted children about their lives and thoughts on the future.

After reconnecting with his sister Viv, Johnny starts to grow close with his young nephew Jesse, played by Woody Norman. The two form a sincere and realistic relationship over the course of a road trip, and this bond makes C’mon C’mon a beautifully tender film and one of A24’s best features.
