Video game romances have been around ever since the early days when players took control of dashing heroes saving princesses from evil wizards and giant dinosaurs. As video games have progressed in technology and scope, so too have storytelling options that allowed developers to tackle meaningful, artistic and expressive character relationships of all kinds.

Whatever stage in video game history, there are some character romances that just stand out. Some are meant to be silly and fun, while others go straight for heart in an attempt to stir emotion in the player. The right romance can create a huge impact on the overall story, and gamers seem to love it.

10 Billy & Jimmy Lee & Marion (Double Dragon)

It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on in the Double Dragon franchise, but a love triangle does seem the most obvious explanation. Billy and Jimmy Lee have taken it to the streets on more than one occasion to deal with the gang responsible for either kidnapping or killing their beloved Marion, which is a testament to commitment.

The Lee brothers have faced down the worst the streets have to offer, from the muscled Abobo to the notorious Duke, a martial arts master with supernatural powers at his disposal. There’s no lengths the brothers won’t go to for Marion’s sake. It may make for one weird wedding day, however.

9 Chloe & Rachel (Life Is Strange: Before The Storm)

Chloe and Rachel’s relationship really takes on a life of its own in the Life Is Strange secondary episode “Before The Storm.” The game takes its time to develop the bond between the two, while giving players the choice to pursue something deeper and more romantic. It’s a soft pillow amidst the backdrop of all the bad that is happening around them.

There are plenty of timeless moments the two, from sharing music earbuds on a train, to dancing under a lamp post with dreams of running away together, and everything in between. It’s one of the most dramatic and exposition-driven romance options in video gaming, done tastefully and artistically at the same time.

8 Geralt & Yennefer (The Witcher)

The Witcher relationship between Geralt and Yennefer is one of the most rocky and turbulent in video game history, and for good reason. The two were bound to each other after Geralt inadvertently unleashed a powerful djinn into the world which had threatened Yennefer’s life. She desired a child she could not have, and that Geralt could not give her.

Eventually, the introduction of Ciri gave Yennefer the child she had been looking for, at least in some respect. Both she and Geralt maintained feelings for one another which led to an important decision later on. The love was there, but the circumstances made the foundation unstable.

7 Bayek & Aya (Assassin’s Creed: Origins)

Assassin’s Creed may have started out with a focus largely on combat, stealth and a story full of intrigue and betrayal, but subsequent sequels have demanded a little more in terms of storytelling. One of the best representations of video game romances is Bayek and Aya, two lovers driven into a quest for vengeance after the death of their young son.

As the two pursue those responsible, they gradually rekindle their relationship in a deep and powerful way. However, as they grow stronger, their paths in life drive them farther apart, creating one of the saddest breakups in gaming history. Though their love is deep and unbreakable, their reasons for being prove to be their ultimate downfall.

6 V & Judy (Cyberpunk 2077)

Cyberpunk 2077 has plenty of romance options available to the player, but there’s one character who stands above the rest when it comes to overall sweetness and commitment, and that’s Judy. This street urchin is a braindance specialist who ends up getting more than she bargained for when Evelyn Parker contracts V to retrieve a relic from the clutches of Arasaka.

After things go to hell in Cyberpunk 2077, Judy can engage V in a variety of conversations and side missions that can bring them closer together. The standout moment is the date mission where Judy takes V back to her old neighborhood, years after it was submerged under water. Judy might look tough, but she’s vulnerable and sweet on the inside, and the resulting relationship is one of the most intimate.

5 The Master Chief & Cortana (Halo)

The Spartan known as the Master Chief in Halo has an interesting relationship with his AI pal Cortana. The two have been through more than their fair share of battles together, acting as one unit with Cortana providing valuable situation intel and other vital data. Without her, it’s doubtful the Chief would have gotten as far as he did.

Things between the two shifted dramatically when Cortana was held hostage by the Gravemind. The Chief hatched a bold rescue plan, only to discover later that Cortana was beginning to fall victim to rampancy, a condition which breaks down the mental state of AIs. It remains to be seen how her character arc wraps up, but there’s no denying that things between her and the Chief go beyond friendship.

4 Darth Revan & Bastila Shan (Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic)

Knights of the Old Republic introduced Star Wars audiences to a brand new universe that took place thousands of years before the original movies. The story centered around the Sith character of Darth Revan, a notorious ex-Jedi who fell to the dark side and kicked off a campaign of war against the Republic.

It’s later discovered that Revan is actually the main player who lost their memory. Throughout the course of the adventure, Revan can romance the Jedi known as Bastila Shan, a relationship that would produce more lore in the form of Satele Shan, a central character in the Old Republic MMORPG. It is definitely one of the most important relationships in the Star Wars universe.

3 Ellie & Riley (The Last Of Us)

The events of The Last Of Us were chaotic, to say the least. The interesting take on the zombie apocalypse formula was counter-balanced by a Walking Dead-style human story about Joel and Ellie, two survivors who form an unbreakable bond in the midst of a world gone completely off the rails.

Ellie’s character development in The Last of Us was expanded on with the release of the Left Behind DLC pack. Here, audiences learned that Ellie had feelings for a girl named Riley, which was developing past the friendship stage. Unfortunately, things went sour, and Riley met her demise after being bitten, leaving Ellie alone in the world, at least for a time.

2 Commander Shepard & Liara T’Soni (Mass Effect)

Mass Effect is famous for delivering some of the best romance options in video games, period. The interweaving character story arcs can spill into one another, providing plenty of opportunity for love to blossom. As Commander Shepard, the player has a lot of potential options when it comes to intimacy, but Liara T’Soni remains a fan favorite.

While many of the characters in Mass Effect are interesting, or downright fascinating, Liara is by far the most accessible and “human.” She’s a soothing balm on Shepard’s wounds, both physical and psychological, and although things take a shaky turn in the second act, the player can revitalize their relationship in the third game. The drama that unfolds between the two feels natural, sweet, and supportive, which is all anyone can ask for.

1 Mario & Peach (Super Mario Bros.)

Mario and Peach have been punch-drunk with love for decades. They may be mismatched in many ways, but that’s part of what makes them such a special couple. Peach is a beanpole, Mario is a shrimp, yet they both seem to have that special chemistry.

Here’s to hoping Mario and Peach never truly lose that special bond, no matter how many times Bowser comes knocking. Eventually, Nintendo is going to have to move their characters forward, so it’ll be interesting to see if any baby pipe-cleaners are in the mix anytime soon.
