The 10 Best Characters In Only Murders In The Building

Spoiler Warning: This list contains plot spoilers for Only Murders in the Building

Hulu’s latest hit series Only Murders in the Building just wrapped up its inaugural season that was filled with hilarious moments, shocking scenes, and plenty of plot twists. Of course, none of that would matter if the show didn’t feature an impressive array of characters.

Thankfully, Only Murders in the Building boasts a cast of characters that were well-written, fleshed out, flawed, and ultimately entertaining to watch engage with each other, and get involved in all sorts of shenanigans. Of course, some characters got more time to shine and were developed to be the best of the bunch.

10 Bunny

For the most part, Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell) was around to be a nuisance and a thorn in the side of the main characters. As the board leader at the Arconia, she did whatever she could to get Mabel, Charles, and Oliver evicted and was known to threaten Oliver to pay his building fees.

Other than that, she didn’t do much but it looked like she might be set up as the season 2 antagonist. She had an altercation with Mabel and Oliver in the final minutes where she promised to get them kicked out. However, a new twist came with the reveal that she was killed, with Oliver, Mabel, and Charles getting arrested for it.

9 Sting

The 10 Best Characters In Only Murders In The Building

There’s a pretty long list of celebrities who play themselves in television shows, albeit in an exaggerated fashion. Music icon Sting joined that group as he played a version of himself in Only Murders in the Building that saw him be a suspect in Tim Kono’s murder as well as in poisoning Oliver’s dog.

Of course, that didn’t end up being true and Sting was cleared of any involvement. He only played a part in the first few episodes but he was a welcome presence who kept things entertaining. Somehow, having a real person involved in the case made things all the more outrageous.

8 Theo Dimas

The 10 Best Characters In Only Murders In The Building

When the audience is first introduced to Theo Dimas (James Caverly), he seems like he’s just a mere background character to show that Teddy Dimas has family members around. In one of the show’s better plot twists, Theo became a much bigger part with the reveal that he was the one who pushed Zoe off the building.

Theo seemed like a nice kid who just made a mistake but he proved to be more sinister, willing to let his father cover things up and even kidnap Oliver and Mabel when they got too close to the truth. Plus, it was incredibly engaging to watch “The Boy From 6B,” an episode with no audible dialogue and from his point of view as a deaf person.

7 Teddy Dimas

Although Theo was the one to actually cause the death of Zoe, Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane) was the real villain of that story. He was quick to protect his son, which was admirable, but he did so by threatening the lives of others. It’s due to him silencing Tim that Oscar spends time in jail.

Teddy was an interesting antagonist too since he is an old friend of Oliver’s who also sponsored the podcast of the main trio. It put him at odds with them while supporting them, meaning he could squeeze them to do what he wanted, adding layers to his villainy.

6 Tim Kono

The entire story begins with Tim Kono (Julian Cihi) and his death. It sends the entire plot into motion and though he dies in the first episode, more about him is revealed through flashbacks. For starters, his connection to Mabel is an intriguing one, as is the way other tenants discussed him.

Tim also had an interesting and complex relationship with Jan. On top of it all, Tim also gains points for being someone who tried to do good. He realized that he did Oscar wrong and was doing everything he could to take down Teddy Dimas as a way of making up for it but he was tragically killed before he could.

5 Oscar

The first character to be the potential murderer was Oscar (Aaron Dominguez), otherwise known as “Tie Dye Guy.” He was seen going upstairs when everyone was evacuating the Arconia but Oscar turned out to not be the killer and was actually one of the more likable people on the show.

He was framed for Zoe’s death and spent time in prison but quickly reignited his bond with Mabel upon returning, ultimately becoming her romantic interest. Oscar proved to be someone the audience could root for, was a supportive friend, and helped the core team with solving key murders.

4 Jan

When Charles first got the chance to interact with Jan (Amy Ryan) and the two flirted, it felt like the start of something good for Charles. The two got along great, had chemistry, and even enjoyed the cheesy jokes the other said. She was a bit annoying when she inserted herself into the podcast trio but nobody expected the truth about her.

Jan was revealed to have been in a relationship with Tim Kono and she was the one to kill him. Watching her drop the facade in front of Charles in the finale was breathtaking and it made you wish the viewers found out sooner so Amy Ryan could play evil for longer. She was a compelling baddie due to her brains and cunning nature.

3 Oliver Putnam

Of the three podcasters, Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) was typically the source of comedy. His eccentric nature made him say hilarious things about his co-hosts and you couldn’t help but laugh when he’d do odd things like only eat dips. There was more to him than just the laughs though.

Viewers got a glimpse into his home life as his poor business choices caused a strained relationship with his son. Ultimately, Oliver was a lonely man and it likely meant more to him to find Charles and Mabel than it did for the others. He also proved himself to be loyal and sympathetic.

2 Charles-Haden Savage

The 10 Best Characters In Only Murders In The Building

It’s interesting to see Oliver and Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin) and the way they live their lives considering both were past successes in show business. Charles is much more reserved and content to a quiet life alone, which is why it’s great to see the podcast help him come out of his shell.

Again, he’s someone that fans get to see in a different light when his past is discussed. His previous relationship left him shuttered and it actually is part of why he forms something of a father/daughter bond with Mabel, while Oliver is more of a partner in the crime for the young woman. The way he figures out the truth about Jan is also impressive.

1 Mabel Mora

Right off the bat, Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) stood out from her two co-hosts because of her age, bringing a more modern flair to the group. She was also the most layered of the main characters thanks to the great episode 1 reveal that she actually knew Tim Kono well, making the investigation more personal for her.

As things progressed, Mabel became more trusting of Charles and Oliver, letting them in on her secret. She also proved to be very smart, figuring out things before others, and pretty tough, evidenced by her punching Jan and telling off Bunny in the end.
