Something amazing about Christmas time is without a doubt, the Christmas Special episodes of all our favorite shows, that includes anime. There’s something heartwarming, almost magical, about watching an anime episode set during Christmas time. The mood is different, lighter, and for jus one episode, you know it’ going to end well. Although Christmas has now come and gone, let’s keep it going a little while longer with a ranking of the best Christmas episode in anime. If we’re being honest it’s near impossible to rank them, but let’s try!

Before diving in, here are some honorary mentions: ‘Pikachu’s Winter Vacation’, ‘Academia Hethalia Christmas’, ‘Tendo Family Christmas Scramble’.

10 Love Hina – “Silent Eve” Christmas Special Movie

Starting this off with a classic romance anime: Love Hina. This Christmas special came out in 2000 and is designed to be a bonus episode, no spoilers here.

As the first Christmas of the new millennium approaches, Keitarō tries his best to focus on his last few tests of the year until he hears about a strange rumor going around: if one confesses their love on Christmas Eve, it will come true. Keitarō is determined to finally confess his love for Naru and hopes to take advantage of this magical night to make his dream come true.

9 Dr. Stone – Episode 21 “Spartan Crafts Club”

Dr. Stone only started airing back in July 2019 and is already among one of the most popular anime out there. While the village prepares for winter, Senku, Chrome, and Kaseki work on making durable lightbulbs. After a great number of failed attempts, they finally manage to put together working lightbulbs and Senku leaves on his own to prepare a little surprise. At the end of the episode, Senku gathers the whole village in the forest and uses the energy from the new generator to light up the lightbulbs he and his friends made, revealing a beautiful Christmas tree.

Although this episode is not completely focused on Christmas, the ending was sweet and it was amazing to see that despite everything that has happened since Senku woke up, he was still determined to celebrate Christmas and give back to the people who gave him a home.

8 Himouto! Umaru-Chan – Episode 8, “Umaru and Christmas and New Year’s”

Himouto! Umaru-Chan is an overall extra-adorable anime as it is. One would think it’d be hard to top the regular cuteness of the series, but if you add to that some good old Christmas spirit, you have yourself the most comforting Christmas episode ever.

The characters reflect on the year that passed and what the new year will bring while enjoying some good old lazying and cooking delicious food. Just what everyone loves around Christmas time.

7 Sword Art Online – Episode 3, Red Nose Reindeer

In this episode, Kirito chooses to join a guild. He quickly bonds with Sashi who admitted to him that she was scared of dying. While the guild members are on the 27th floor killing monsters, they trigger a trap that will be their downfall. The whole guild is killed, except for Kirito who has a much higher level and barely escapes.

After defeating the Christmas boss, Nicholas the Renegade, Kirito goes back to his room at the tavern where he finds a record of Sashi telling him to stay strong and keep on living in the hopes to one day be free again. Kirito is shown for the first time as vulnerable, overwhelmed, and not as big of a jerk as he appeared in the first couple of episodes. This episode if both heartbreaking and heartwarming and sets the rest of the series into motion.

6 Yuri!! on Ice – Episode 11, Gotta Supercharge It! Pre-Grand Prix Final Special!

As the skaters gather in Barcelona for the Grand Prix Finale, Viktor and Yuri set off on their own to explore the nearby Christmas market. After a day filled with shopping and good food, Yuri surprises Viktor with two rings, that the latter will call ‘engagement’ rings, to show their commitment to each other.

At long last! Of course, Viktor/Yuri is everyone’s OTP and now, we have something to look forward to, all that needs to be done is wait for the movie to come out, one day.

5 Toradora! – Episode 17, “Mercury Retrograde on Christmas”

“Mercury Retrograde on Christmas” is the first of three episodes set during Christmas time. A lot happens in this first episode: Taiga’s suspension is finally lifted, Ryuuji and Minorin’s relationship seems to be at an impasse once again and Christmas spirit put into light feelings that were previously hidden.

This is the first episode of Taiga’s big transformation as she decides to be good for Christmas and makes it her missing to help Taiga win Monorin’s heart, for one part, as well as help organize the big Christmas party organized by the school. Perfect start to the three-episode subplot.

4 Cardcaptor Sakura, Episode 35—“Sakura’s Wonderful Christmas”

This episode is amazing for two reasons: 1) it follows the main plot and brings us an amazing fight for the Firey card 2) it brings all the characters together in a magical setting that automatically gives you Christmas vibes. With Yuki’s birthday being on Christmas Day, Sakura confers with Meiling to find the perfect gift.

Later on, she invites Yuki to the amusement park, and the two of them meet up with Toya, Tomoyo, Meiling, and Syaoran. All is well until the park lights catch fire and Sakura is forced to find the source of the problem.

3 Digimon Adventure – Season 2 Episode 38, “A Very Digi-Christmas”

The second generation of DigiDestined was great, but it just can’t beat the first-gen. This episode brings back the original group, looking a bit more grown-up than the last time we saw then. The new generation of DigiDestined arranged a big surprise for their predecessor who couldn’t be happier to see their Digimon again.

Of course, it wouldn’t be ‘Digimon’ if there weren’t some evil Digimon threatens their safety, and this time, it’s Arukenimon who has something up his sleeve. This episode has everything you could ask for: action, emotional reunion, old favorites, and new enemies, perfect combo!

2 K-On! – Episode 9 “Christmas”

Christmas approaches and everyone is letting themselves be taken by the Christmas spirit. Though all the main characters make an appearance in this episode, it is focused on Ui and Yui and the sisterly love they share. Ui remembers a time when she and Yui were kids when Yui tried to give her sister a white Christmas by putting pillow stuffing on the tree outside their house.

As the party reaches an end, snow starts to fall and the two sisters fall asleep next to each, reminiscing about their childhood and taking the time to feel blesses about their lives. This episode is a good reminder that family is everything and though we bicker and fight sometimes, there is a bond that can never be broken.

1 Toradora – Episode 19, “The Christmas Eve Party”

Yes, Toradora! is featured twice, for good reasons! The last of the three Christmas episodes is absolutely amazing. It is a roller coaster of emotions, in all the good ways. Starting with Taiga and Ami’s song at the party which is a sweet moment between two characters that had a rocky start, to say the least. Later on, Taiga goes back home alone to wait for Santa though she feels lonely.

Knowing she would have no one, Ryuuji goes to her house dressed up as a giant bear. Taiga’s reaction is one of pure joy and it would warm the heart of the most reluctant Grinch. The episode focuses on themes such as hope, forgiveness and new beginnings which is what Christmas is all about after all.
