10 Honorable Mention: The Wannabes
Incredibles 2 introduces the audience to a wide range of new characters, all of whom have come to idolize the original supers from a bygone era. Nicknamed the Wannabes, they eventually form a heroic team of their own towards the end of the film.
Within this group are a number of designs that are both striking and reflective of the powers of the individuals. It’s certainly difficult to introduce so many new players at once, but their attires go a long way in the audience coming to easily recognize what they stand for. These additions are too many to mention but are one of the most intriguing parts of the sequel.
9 Classic Mr. Incredible
The first major super suit that is introduced in the first Incredibles is that of Mr. Incredible’s retro costume. From the iconic logo to the cool blues (which match well to his partner Frozone) and the striking silhouette of the piece, this attire was a great way to demonstrate the design aesthetic of this original franchise.
It’s certainly a memorable piece of costuming, with the color blocking techniques used effectively. The type of mask that Bob wears is also a great link to many of the other costume’s within his family, playing upon the importance of anonymity yet maintaining his brash persona through the boldness of the suit’s design.
8 Classic Elastigirl
Elastigirl’s first costume is also seen early on in the original film and much like Bob’s is brought back again briefly for the sequel. It’s interesting that her classic E symbol is later lost from her group costuming, yet it certainly has pride of place here as Elastigirl holds on to her own unique identity.
The bright reds of the costume will later be combined with the blacks of Mr. Incredible’s to form the family’s wardrobe, which is a brilliant touch. There’s a sleekness to this design that brings with it a kind of kinetic energy; the suit somehow manages to reflect Helen’s own powers, with her limbs looking especially long thanks to the cut of the costume.
7 New Age Elastigirl
A huge part of the new costume for Elastigirl in Incredibles 2 is about reclaiming her identity. She still features some of the classic red in both her logo and her bike, which of course pays homage to the rest of her family. Yet there’s something grittier about this design.
The silhouette is very similar and the E has returned to the costume to demonstrate her solo status. The darker colors throughout the suit are a little more representative of the secretive nature of her new assignments though, as Helen Parr tries to evolve into a new era of crime-fighting.
6 Frozone
When looking at some of the most iconic costumes from The Incredibles it would be incredibly difficult to overlook that of Frozone’s super suit, which has certainly been the center of one of the most well-known cinematic quotes of all time.
There’s something really timeless about this attire and it shows considering it hasn’t evolved really at all throughout the movies, despite the shifting eras. It contains a very simple set of lines that naturally reflect his icy abilities and his ski-esque mask and helmet is a wonderful touch that also pays homage to that of the late Gazerbeam.
5 The Family Uniform
When it finally came for the whole family to get in on the action Edna was especially thrilled to wheel out her brand new designs. Bullet resistant, able to morph to the team’s abilities, and extremely striking, these costumes are instantly recognizable to audiences worldwide.
The previously mentioned colors of both Bob and Helen’s other costumes are brought into play here, but the oranges and yellows come to represent the addition of their children. Although all of these costumes look similar, their shapes are bespoke pieces for each individual character. Interestingly, the design of Bob and Dash’s and Violet and Helen’s parallel one another.
4 The Underminer
Brad Bird’s genius move to end the first film with a brand new threat meant that there was a simple jumping-off point for any sequel that might be made. The Underminer would be the villain needed to jumpstart another film and his design is certainly monstrous.
There are definitely comparisons to be made between The Incredibles and The Fantastic Four, so it’s only right that The Underminer’s design feels a little like the Mole Man. There’s something especially creepy about the inhumane elements of the costume, which bring in both mining imagery and link well with the animalistic features of this dangerous foe.
3 Bomb Voyage
Jumping into the world of The Incredibles for the first time, audiences were only just getting used to what these original heroes may look like thanks to the promotional material. With any hero though comes a villain and fans first met the enemy known as Bomb Voyage.
The character would be integral to Syndrome and Bob’s backstory and another reason as to why the superhero community had to move into the shadows. He had to stand out, therefore. Combining elements of the art of miming with a more military-based bombing gear, Bomb Voyage’s look felt gritty and handmade.
2 Screenslaver
Screenslaver was the mysterious enemy of the latest installment of this ongoing adventure and the suit was clearly designed to hide who was underneath. The shapes weren’t traditionally masculine or feminine therefore and the idea is that anyone can inhabit the role.
The mask itself is especially creepy and there are no other designs quite like this one in the franchise. The goggles are an interesting touch, playing into the hypnotic themes of the character and the helmet instills fear into anyone that sees it. It’s interesting that the body of the costume is largely plain to put the focus on the face; the area which will cause panic when seen on a screen.
1 Syndrome
Syndrome is one of the best villains in all of cinema. With a purposeful goal in mind, a brilliant origin story, and a great set of abilities at his disposal, the character certainly wasn’t let down by his own suit’s design. In many ways, it contrasts well to that of The Incredibles.
The lines within the design are similar to that of Bob’s original costume especially, which makes a nice link. Yet there’s also room here for the various gadgets and gizmos the character needs to use. The mask is another notable inclusion as is the Syndrome ‘S’ which, of course, plays on the imagery set out by the likes of Superman and later Sentry.
