The Mummy is one of Universal’s most memorable classic monsters. How do his movies stack up on IMDb?

From 1932 to 1955, The Mummy remained among Universal’s most vaunted classic movie monsters. The zombified Egyptian priest who spreads a fatal curse upon being exhumed by archeologists appeared in six feature films during that span, with everyone from Boris Karloff and Tom Tyler to Lon Chaney Jr. and Eddie Parker Jr. playing the role.
After a four-decade absence, The Mummy was resurrected by Universal through an FX-driven trilogy of films starring Brendan Fraser. In 2017, Universal revived The Mummy under its Dark Universe shingle with Tom Cruise taking center stage. Here’s how all The Mummy movies stack up so far.
10 The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Empire (2008) – 5.2
Before spinning off into The Scorpion King franchise, the final entry in the newfangled Mummy series belongs to Tomb of the Dragon, a globetrotting adventure largely set in China. Though there’s some fun to be had in this series’ third outing, many agree that the franchise’s move from Egypt — whose history is synonymous to the Mummy mythos — was one of this movie’s biggest miscalculations.
Brendan Fraser reprises his role as American explorer Rick O’Connell, this time hired to transport the sacred “Eye of Shangri La” diamond from England to China. Once there, Rick and his family must contend with the evil Emperor Han (Jet Li), whose henchman plans to resurrect the mummy on his behalf.
9 The Mummy (2017) – 5.4
Not even the luminous star-power of Tom Cruise could rescue the revival of The Mummy from the critical drubbing it received upon release. The Mummy was meant to kickstart an entire actionized cinematic universe revolving around the Universal Classic Monsters in “The Dark Universe,” but the failure of its first and only film ended the universe before it could even exist. However, the film did gross more than $400 million internationally, so not all was lost for Universal.
Directed by Alex Kurtzman, The Mummy tracks U.S. Army Sergeant Nick Morton (Cruise), who discovers the tomb of Egyptian Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) buried in Iraq. Upon exhuming her corpse, the mummified Princess awakens to spread a vengeful curse upon those who unjustly took her life hundreds of years earlier.
8 The Mummy’s Curse (1944) – 5.6
Legendary horror thespian Lon Chaney Jr. played The Mummy for the third and final time in The Mummy’s Curse, in which the titular zombie is sent to Louisiana to wreak bloody havoc in the sweltering bayou.
Directed by Leslie Goodwins, the film picks up when a poorly designed irrigation process accidentally rises Kharis the Egyptian Prince from his swampy grave. Once reanimated, The Mummy is taken to a monastery where he begins to exact a brutal murder spree while trying to capture his former Princess Ananka (Virginia Christine).
7 The Mummy’s Tomb (1942) – 5.7
The Mummy’s Tomb takes place 30 years after events depicted in the previous franchise entry, The Mummy’s Hand. Lon Chaney Jr. plays the role of Kharis the Egyptian Mummy for the first time, as he’s brought to America by a High-Priest to exact revenge on those who violated the crypt of his beloved Princess, Ananka.
Directed by Harold Young, the plot thickens when Priest Mehemet Bey (Turhan Bey) takes Kharis to a cemetery and begins to feed him brewed tana leaves. The brew stirs a malevolent streak in the Mummy as he sets out to avenge his lover’s memory.
6 The Mummy’s Ghost (1944) – 5.8
Released the same years as The Mummy’s Curse, The Mummy’s Ghost continues Kharis’ (Lon Chaney Jr.) dogged search for his beloved Princess Ananka (Ramsay Ames). This time out, the bandaged baddie is brought to Massachusetts and granted eternal life through a sacred serum administered by Yousef Bey (John Carradine).
When Ananka’s soul is transferred to another human body, Kharis goes on a belligerent killing spree to find her before its too late to save her spirit.
5 The Mummy’s Hand (1940) – 6.1
Lon Chaney Jr. was first swaddled in the iconic Mummy bandages in The Mummy’s Hand, in which the zombified Prince Kharis works in tandem with the evil high priest Andoheb (George Zucco) to slaughter those who desecrated his grave.
When two lowly archeologists discover the tomb of Kharis’ bride, Ananka, they set out to make a fortune. They travel across the desert to show off the evidence, but they are unmercifully met by the murderous Mummy.
4 Abbott & Costello Meet The Mummy (1955) – 6.4
Universal’s original Mummy movie franchise ended with the comedic likes of Abbott and Costello Meet The Mummy, a seven-year sequel to Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
Directed by Charles Lamont, the film traces two dimwitted American archeologists (legendary comic duo Bud Abbott and Lou Costello) who accidentally happen upon the find of a lifetime. When they discover what appears to be a priceless medallion, the relic leads to their exhumation of the menacing and murderous Mummy (Eddie Parker).
3 The Mummy Returns (2001) – 6.4
Stephen Sommers’s $100 million The Mummy Returns finds the zombified corpse of Egyptian High Priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) in deadly pursuit of the powerful Bracelet of Anubis. Upon reanimating in a London museum, Imhotep seeks to obtain the bracelet as a means of controlling the Scorpion King’s soldiers.
American adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) is tasked with retrieving the bracelet while saving his wife Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) and son Alex (Freddie Boath) before time runs out. The Mummy Returns is everything fans of the original expected, now with the added bonus of The Rock making his feature film debut in some beautifully campy CGI as the Scorpion King.
2 The Mummy (1999) – 7.0
The inaugural entry in Universal’s second-wave Mummy franchise ranks the highest on IMDb. This FX-driven $80 million spectacle from director Stephen Sommers grossed more than $415 million globally, spawning two lucrative sequels and a spin-off series.
After saving his life, Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) enlists the help of American explorer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) to dig up the ruinous remains of the ancient city Hamunaptra. Racing against a rival team of explorers, Rick and Evelyn unwittingly revive the ghoulish remains of Egyptian priest Imhotep, which awakens with fatal intent. The Mummy arguably cemented Fraser in the public consciousness, with this series being his most popular work to date.
1 The Mummy (1932) – 7.1
Universal’s original remains the cream of the crop, according to IMDb voters. The Mummy stars horror icon Boris Karloff as the titular terror, doggedly searching for a woman in Cairo, Egypt he believes to be his estranged princess.
Directed by Karl Freund, Karloff plays Imhotep, the accursed Egyptian mummy who is resurrected following the recitation of the Scroll of Toth. A decade later, The Mummy disguises himself as a man named Ardeth Bey and searches for the womanly reincarnation of his longtime lover. The Mummy is arguably responsible for this entire horror subgenre and though some parts of it didn’t age perfectly, its impact and influence are undeniably timeless.
