This musical comedy follows a World War II vet named Jerry, who decides to stay in France and pursue a career in art. However, when the wealthy Lise catches sight of his work, it’s not long before he also holds her attention.

With imaginative dance numbers and an original story, An American in Paris left critics applauding. It ended up winning the Academy Awards for Best Writing (Story and Screenplay), Best Music (Scoring of a Musical Picture), Best Costume Design (Color), Best Art (Set Decoration, Color), and finally, the coveted Best Picture.

9 The Philadelphia Story (1940): 100%

A decade before An American in Paris was enchanting viewers, The Philadelphia Story was doing the same.

Though the wealthy Tracy Lord hopes to marry a yacht designer, her marriage plans become complicated after a tabloid journalist and her ex-husband show up.

The witty script, in combination with a charismatic cast (Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and James Stewart), had this one earning the attention of critics. While Stewart won the Academy Award for Best Actor, Donald Ogden Stewart won the accolade for Best Writing, Screenplay.

8 Top Hat (1935): 100%

Even earlier in film history, the screwball musical comedy known as Top Hat was stealing the spotlight.

This 1935 film follows a dancer who visits London in hopes of starring in a new show. Though he’s charmed by a woman he meets there, he’s not the only one who hopes to win her affection.

The spirited dance numbers, entertaining story, and strong performances helped Top Hat rise to new heights.

7 The Adventures Of Robin Hood (1938): 100%

The legendary Robin Hood received a fresh film adaption through this 1938 swashbuckler.

The Adventures of Robin Hood has the titular character plotting against Prince John, who plans to take over the throne in King Richard the Lionheart’s absence. After Richard returns to England, the pair unite with Robin’s men to take down the villain.

Robin Hood succeeded due to its romance-laced story, colorful visuals, and adventurous plot. It won Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score at the Academy Awards.

6 Call Me By Your Name (2018): 95%

Based on the novel by Luca Guadagnino, Call Me by Your Name follows a teenage Jewish-American and a graduate student who spends the summer of ’83 together in Italy figuring out who they are and where they’re going in life.

Critics loved the honest adaption and layered take on love. Additionally, the direction and acting were commended.

Call Me by Your Name won Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards.

5 The Big Sick (2017): 98%

This 2017 rom-com, based loosely on the real romance between starring actor Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily V. Gordon, tells of a Pakistani comic who falls for a graduate student that attends one of his performances. Though Kumail stresses over what his Muslim parents will think of the girl he loves, he soon faces bigger problems after she falls into a coma.

Funny and smart, The Big Sick explored cultural themes that other romcoms rarely tackled. The cast’s natural chemistry was also too strong to ignore.

4 Singin’ In The Rain (1952): 100%

In 1952’s Singin’ in the Rain, Hollywood transitions from the silent film era to that of “talkies.” At the center of it all is aspiring actress Kathy. She is asked to record the voice-over of a popular actress, who can’t sing a note.

The grand musical numbers, vibrant scenes, and spirited humor helped the musical rom-com score admiration. Many films that came after Singin’ in the Rain has used it as inspiration.

3 The Shape Of Water (2017): 92%

The Shape of Water splashed into theaters in 2017.

The dark fantasy follows a mute cleaning lady, who lives in 1962 Baltimore. Soon after finding a water creature hidden inside the lab she works at, she begins to engage in a romance that could easily be taken away by the government at any moment.

The film was praised for many elements including its visuals, production, score, direction, screenplay, and acting. This had it claiming Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Director, and Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

2 It Happened One Night (1934): 98%

This 1934 romantic comedy tells of a socialite named Ellie who hopes to escape her father’s strict control over her life. Upon meeting a newspaper reporter named Peter, the two team up to help her find her husband if she will, in turn, give him a good story.

Though Columbia had low expectations for the film, its lively plot and captivating leads had it winning critical respect.

It Happened One Night is one of the few films to take home all “Big Five” awards at the Oscars. These include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Clark Gable), Best Actress (Claudette Colbert), and Best Writing, Adaption.

1 Casablanca (1942): 98%

Topping off the list as the highest-rated romance of all time is Casablanca.

This 1942 classic has nightclub owner Rick Blaine reuniting with an old love after she and her husband, Victor, end up in town. With World War II Germans closely following Victor, however, Rick must figure out how to help the couple escape, sacrificing his romance in the process.

With strong dialogue, enchanting characters, and a beautiful soundtrack, Casablanca will forever live on in Hollywood history. In addition to taking Best Writing, Screenplay and Best Director at the Academy Awards, Casablanca won the big Best Picture title.
