Hulu’s collection of supernatural shows is quite impressive given the range of shows the streaming service has to offer. From a classic horror revival like The Exorcist to an offbeat vampire comedy like What We Do In The Shadows, Hulu’s supernatural-driven content can add to several binge sessions depending upon the viewer’s mind.

Even though most of these shows end up having horror undertones, there are some exceptions too like Merlin that largely relies on magical fantasy, and Twin Peaks, which plays out like a mystery drama.

10 Salem (2014-2017): 7.2

As its name suggests, Salem is a period drama set around the same period as the infamous Salem witch trials of the 17th century. Adding elements of supernatural horror, the show depicts an alternate history with a Gothic romance thrown in the mix.

As a witch (Janet Montgomery) creates chaos and is determined to summon the Devil, her long-lost lover (Shane West) returns and serves as a distraction from her plans. Apart from the romantic angle, Salem also offers interesting perspectives on the then-relevant debate on ‘sorcery vs science’.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving has been a mainstay in horror, further popularized by Tim Burton’s Gothic feature Sleepy Hollow. In the sleepy town of East End, two sisters (Jenna Dewan and Rachel Boston) grow up without knowing their hidden magical powers until they discover a family secret. It turns out the girls were raised under a ‘witch’ mother (Julia Ormond) as they all team up against mortal enemies.

Witches of East End doesn’t shy away from its melodrama but it also offers some moving moments, benefiting from the chemistry shared between its lead actors.

7 Merlin (2008-2012): 7.9

According to medieval folklore, Merlin was the name of King Arthur’s loyal courtier and a master magician. This British fantasy adventure reimagines the Arthurian legends from the perspective of Merlin (Colin Morgan) as he seeks to make sense out of his magical gifts.

Usually, media centering on King Arthur tend to focus on the iconic monarch. But Merlin’s fresh take subverts those depictions and offers new viewpoints from the story by documenting Merlin’s rise in the kingdom of Camelot. It’s worth watching past season 1, if nothing else, for the incredible characters introduced – particularly for history buffs.

6 American Horror Story (2011): 8

With every season offering a new storyline, American Horror Story has turned into a mega-event of sorts for fans of modern horror. What the show largely benefits from is the perfect blend of tonal elements. As the protagonist Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) learns the ways to become a trained vampire-hunter, defeating and being overpowered in the process, her quests are filled with situations of pure horror as well as bleak comedy. In fact, a particular highpoint was a special episode that ended up featuring various cinematic vampires as guest stars ranging from Wesley Snipes (Blade) to Tilda Swinton (Only Lovers Left Alive).

1 Twin Peaks (1990-2017): 8.8

Twin Peaks starts off as a mystery as an FBI agent (Kyle MacLachlan) travels to the titular town to investigate the death of a high-schooler. However, as time passes, he encounters the unknown in the bizarre ways possible.

As noted surrealist David Lynch serves as the creative force behind the show’s direction and writing, Twin Peaks has its fair share of dream sequences, magical realism, and eccentric characters. Over the years, the series has garnered a cult following and deserves to be viewed for its landmark impact on ’90s-era television.
