The 10 First Ever DC Movies Ranked According To IMDb

Superhero movies are more popular than they have ever been, and no other genre can even compete in multiplexes. As it stands, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the leading property and is way more successful than the DC Extended Universe. However, it was DC movies that paved the way for Marvel’s success.

Superheroes like Superman and Batman helped studios realize how much potential there was in adapting comic books. On top of that, studios were much quicker to greenlight sequels to DC properties than Marvel films, even despite some of those films being commercial and critical failures.

10 Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987) – 3.7

The 10 First Ever DC Movies Ranked According To IMDb

Superman IV: The Quest For Peace is a complete mess, and it’s such a rare instance when a celebrated cinematic series delivers a totally phoned-in movie on all accounts. There are a lot of reasons behind the final result of the movie. According to the Los Angeles Times, about 40 minutes of footage was removed, and it had a terribly low budget after The Cannon Group went through a financial crisis.

On top of that, Christopher Reeve didn’t even want to make the movie, and he only agreed to return if the movie was based on nuclear disarmament, which is part of why the whole plot makes little sense. However, there are still some great scenes in The Quest For Peace, even if they are few and far between.

9 Supergirl (1984) – 4.4

The 10 First Ever DC Movies Ranked According To IMDb

On the face of it, Supergirl just sounds like a female variant of the much better known Superman. And that’s largely what it is, but the 1984 movie does tell a unique story and it’s even more imaginative than some of the Superman films. But it’s the special effects that bring down the movie’s quality, and it was nominated for several Razzie awards.

The film is also the first example of a cinematic universe, as Supergirl isn’t just a standalone superhero movie; it is directly tied to the Superman movie series. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite stack up to the MCU — or even the DCEU.

8 The Return Of Swamp Thing (1989) – 4.7

The 10 First Ever DC Movies Ranked According To IMDb

It’s amazing that The Return of Swamp Thing even exists, as 1982’s original Swamp Thing wasn’t all that successful at the box office or with the critics. The sequel attempts to quash the criticized aspects of the first movie, as it’s much lighter in tone, but that isn’t exactly what appealed to fans of the source material.

The result was a movie that comic book fans couldn’t get on board with and general audiences didn’t find interesting. And even for a comic book movie, it requires some suspension of disbelief, as people who had died in the first film are resurrected in the sequel.

7 Superman III (1983) – 5.0

The 10 First Ever DC Movies Ranked According To IMDb

Where Superman II was a great follow-up to the original movie, there was a noticeable decrease in quality with Superman III. As the first two movies’ antagonists were Lex Luthor and General Zod, two of Superman’s most iconic antagonists in the comic books, the villain in the third film is just a guy called Ross.

Ross is a knock-off Lex Luthor, as he’s a wealthy industrialist, and his super-villain plot is borderline embarrassing, as he wants to take over the world’s coffee supply. The film is also full of cheap laughs, making it more of a satire of Superman than an actual Superman movie.

6 Swamp Thing (1982) – 5.4

The 10 First Ever DC Movies Ranked According To IMDb

Graphic novels have a place in comic history, as they are compelling, entertaining, and well-illustrated dramas. But the 1982 adaptation of Swamp Thing doesn’t exactly do the source material justice.

The movie had the potential to be great, as it’s about a scientist who is transformed into a monster, and it could have been a Shakespearean-like tragedy like The Fly. It even had the late, great Wes Craven at the helm, who was responsible for iconic horror movies The Nightmare On Elm Street and Scream. Instead, Swamp Thing struggled to juggle its unavoidable campiness with the sincerity of its characters.

5 Batman (1966) – 6.5

The 10 First Ever DC Movies Ranked According To IMDb

Though 6.5 isn’t the greatest score in the world, it’s surprisingly high for a movie that doesn’t have much artistic merit and is extremely dated. Essentially, it’s hard not to be charmed by Batman’s inherent campiness. Whether it’s Batman and Robin’s borderline flirtatious dialogue or all of the onomatopoeia words that blast on the screen, the movie is so much fun.

Not only that, but Catwoman, the Joker, the Riddler, and the Penguin having a shared evil lair in the form of a submarine is a fan’s fever dream. Batman walks a tightrope between being “so bad it’s good” and genuine fun.

4 Superman II (1980) – 6.8

The 10 First Ever DC Movies Ranked According To IMDb

Though the sequel is rated lower than the original on IMDb, it’s not by much, and many actually prefer Superman II to its predecessor. Between the presence of General Zod, the better visual effects, and the brilliant action scenes, the 1980 movie is a great follow-up.

Even outside of the explosive moments that are expected of a Superman movie, it’s so entertaining in its punchy dialogue and great performances. However, there are still some who think there’s too much action that leaves little room for character development.

3 Batman Returns (1992) – 7.0

The 10 First Ever DC Movies Ranked According To IMDb

1989’s Batman was a phenomenon that spun the source material into an epic, major Hollywood blockbuster with a Tim Burton twist. Batman Returns delved deeper into the director’s gothic style, and it’s geared much more towards adults than children.

The movie saw people getting murdered by electrocution and being set on fire, and the grotesque depiction of the Penguin is almost horror-like. The darker approach is somewhat polarizing, but most people love it. It was also the last time fans saw Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader, and there hasn’t been a more unique take on the character since. That’s why fans can’t wait to see Keaton’s return as Batman in The Flash.

2 Superman (1978) – 7.3

The 10 First Ever DC Movies Ranked According To IMDb

Aside from 1966’s Batman, which was essentially a feature-length episode of the TV series, Superman was the very first major DC movie that was produced. It was a major hit and quietly put the trend of Hollywood superhero movies into motion, even if it did take a while for others to reach Superman’s success.

Though Superman III is one of the worst superhero movies on HBO Max, the original movie is one of the best, and it was a trailblazer in terms of special effects. It also introduced the world to one of the best John Williams scores. The movie is complete sensory perfection. And even though another studio would have eventually dived into producing superhero movies, there are so many epically successful movies that wouldn’t exist if not for this film.

1 Batman (1989) – 7.5

Batman is made up of so many strange choices that shouldn’t work but somehow fit perfectly. A comedy actor in the role of Batman, a too-old Jack Nicholson as the Joker, exclusive Prince songs on the soundtrack, and the director of Beetlejuice put together one of the most entertaining movies of the ’80s.

It just goes to show that when directors are actually given creative freedom, even though their ideas sound wild, they make for some of the most envelope-pushing movies possible.
