Nerds are a major part of film history. There are too many to name, yet some of them aren’t even good. These movie nerds fit that bill.

Being a movie nerd is a tough road to travel. You have to be unloved by the opposite sex while being super smart or great at something. Then, you have to undergo a huge transformation so that people can see you for the amazing specimen you’ve always been. It’s a lot of pressure to complete that character arc, but not everyone is successful at it. Some movie nerds are just outright annoying and that’s even if they’re fan favorites somehow. In many cases, they’re just bad stereotypes that don’t stand the test of time.

10 McLovin In Superbad

It’s hard not to root for McLovin. In Superbad, the poor guy just wants to have a good time and manages to find his way there regardless of his supposed friends. His only real mistake was getting a fake Hawaiian driver’s license with a ridiculous name on it. But as funny as the guy is, when you take a step back you see the reality of him, McLovin isn’t that funny. Everything that happens around him is funny. In the end, he’s just an annoying dude that gets super lucky.

9 Kent In Real Genius

This is about as 1980s a movie as you can find. Val Kilmer stars as a genius who hangs out with other geniuses and helps a super young brainiac after he gets into college at a crazy age.

As offensive as some of the stereotypes are in the movie, the worst of the bunch is Kent, the evil nerd out to destroy them all. He’s supposedly really smart but he comes across as one of the dumbest people on campus. The guy is a gullible prop for the good guys to make fun of. That’s it.

8 Kevin Gnapoor In Mean Girls

Mean Girls is arguably one of the funniest movies of the early 2000s. Tina Fey’s trademark wit and sarcasm are all over the script, leading to some incredible characters encased in a superb take on the high school experience. Math geek Kevin Gnapoor is a whole different situation. He’s the stereotypical nerd who doesn’t get that he’s a nerd, and is way too overconfident about it. The man is quite arrogant, with no signs of humility. No one tears their shirt open on stage after leading a group of Mathletes to victory at the state championships.

7 David Levinson In Independence Day

It’s almost physically impossible to say anything bad about Jeff Goldblum. The man is so great a national treasure that Nicholas Cage should be searching for him under Washington, D.C. If you don’t believe that, just go watch The World According to Jeff Goldblum on Disney+.

But one of his worst characters is David Levinson in the 1996 science fiction disaster epic, Independence Day. Levinson uses his super-geek powers to hack an alien computer system with a Mac. It’s as impressive as it is ludicrous.

6 Data In The Goonies

The 1985 classic was written by Chris Columbus, directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg. It’s rare to find a bigger Hollywood power team from this era of filmmaking. The Goonies is about a group of friends trying to save their town and thwart some bad guys by finding lost pirate treasure. One of the kids is Richard “Data” Wang, a stereotypically smart Asian kid who invents gadgets that can be useful but frequently fail. Data is well played by the actor but is certainly one of the parts in the movie that doesn’t hold up 35 years later.

5 J.P In Grandma’s Boy

The Adam Sandler produced cult classic starring Allen Covert tells the story of a middle-aged video game tester who gets thrown out of his home when his roommate spends all their rent money on prostitutes. He moves in with his grandmother and her friends, and hilarity ensues.

Seriously, it does. This is one of the most underrated comedies of the last 2o years. J.P. is the auteur game designer at the company Covert’s character works for and is easily one the worst, most awkward movie nerds of all time. But that’s on purpose, which is something key to keep in mind.

4 Tri-Lambs In Revenge Of The Nerds

If you go into this franchise trying to pick out a single nerd character to highlight as one of the worst movie nerds of all time, you find out one fun fact quickly; they are all equally terrible. This is a movie that has not stood the test of time at all, and neither have its nerdish heroes. They are all so thoroughly unlikeable that it is virtually impossible to root for them. You want the jocks and frat boys to take them out if only to get those offensive stereotypes off the screen.

3 Sam Brenner In Pixels

The plot of this movie requires the viewer to believe that Adam Sandler’s character is an old school gamer and some sort of genius. Good luck with that. The only thing more difficult to do would be believing Kevin James as the President of the United States, which Pixels also asks of you.

This movie had the potential to be really good but it just didn’t come together. Brenner is supposed to be some kind of nerd but he just comes across as another Adam Sandler character. He might have been phoning this one is as Sandler is obviously a more capable actor than that.

2 The Plague In Hackers

Not only is The Plague one of the worst movie nerds of all time, but he also might be the nerdiest villains of all time. Keep in mind that Hackers is a movie featuring an over the top Matthew Lilliard as a hacker named Cereal Killer and somehow is still not the most ridiculous nerd in it. That is saying a lot. The Plague’s nefarious master plan is possibly the nerdiest thing any bad guy has ever done in any movie. Plus, he skateboards around the office he works in while wearing a long coat a lot. You’re inside and there’s air conditioning. No skateboards, no coats.

1 Napoleon Dynamite In Napoleon Dynamite

When you talk about Napoleon Dynamite, you’re talking about one of the most annoying film characters of all time. Napoleon is a nerd from a family of nerds, which is made clear early on in the film. But he doesn’t seem to be smart or good at anything like most movie nerds. The guy is just super annoying, which is part of being a movie nerd and the only box he seems to tick. But Napoleon makes up for any other character traits by being incredibly irritating.
