The 100 10 Hardest Decisions The Main Characters Had To Make

In the world of the CW’s The 100, every day is filled with impossible choices. The characters who inhabit the post-apocalyptic storylines find themselves fighting for their survival and their humanity on a regular basis. The situations find to these beloved characters forced to make incredibly difficult decisions.

A lot of the time, those decisions don’t have great outcomes, but the characters, especially Clarke Griffin, are able to justify their actions with the belief that they’re doing something “for their people.” Every story arc seems to culminate in an impossible choice, whether or not the audience ultimately agrees with what the characters decide.

10 Indra: Taking Octavia In

The 100 10 Hardest Decisions The Main Characters Had To Make

Indra makes a lot of tough calls over the course of the series. She lives her life as a soldier for Trikru, guarding her people, making sure they stay safe when conflict arises in the Grounder nations. Spending her whole life that way drove a wedge between her and her own daughter. Taking in an outsider, and an outsider from the sky at that, is no easy task.

Indra risks being ostracized by her people, even potentially being cast out, for welcoming Octavia and training her to be her second. Ultimately, it works out well for her, but it couldn’t have been a simple decision despite it being made for the audience in seemingly an instant.

9 Monty: Pulling The Lever

The 100 10 Hardest Decisions The Main Characters Had To Make

“Pulling the lever” has become a term associated more so with Clarke than anyone else since she bore the lion’s share of the burden at Mount Weather — or so she thinks. The truth is that what happened at Mount Weather never would have been possible without Monty.

Monty hacks into Mount Weather’s network, allowing for the possibility of opening the vents in the mountain fortress to let outside air — and radiation — in. It’s Monty opening up the system that allows Bellamy and Clarke to make the decision to pull the lever that finishes the job. While Clarke and Bellamy go on to be willing to do anything for their people, Monty’s role weighs on him. He makes the decision to be better for all of humanity’s sake, and when he dies, finding a new planet for humanity to call home, his actions in death change the course of everyone’s lives.

8 Madi: Becoming Heda

The 100 10 Hardest Decisions The Main Characters Had To Make

Madi never really wanted to be Heda. Before Praimfaya, her parents hide the fact that she’s a Nightblood so she won’t have to fight in a conclave. After Praimfaya, when Clarke has adopted her, she tries to protect Madi from the possibility of becoming the Grounder leader as well. It’s to no avail, however, as Madi chooses to take on the role to unite Wonkru after Octavia’s missteps.

Madi’s decision is made after Clarke has already told her what it’s like to have the Flame in her head, how dangerous it is, and how she lost Lexa. Madi knows all the risks involved, and she’s terrified, but she still does it in order to bring an end to a massive conflict and save Clarke’s life.

7 Emori: Trusting Murphy

The 100 10 Hardest Decisions The Main Characters Had To Make

By the end of the series, Murphy and Emori’s relationship is so epic that some fans might forget they were both con artists when they met. Emori even steals all of Murphy’s supplies while he’s in the desert. She is, after all, trying to survive in a hostile world.

Emori is someone who was cast out by her family because of her mutation. She’s grown up having to learn how to survive on her own, and that involves falling in with a group of thieves. Despite having no reason to, she trusts Murphy. She helps him when she could just as easily left him to die. That decision changes her life.

6 Raven: Sacrificing Hatch

The 100 10 Hardest Decisions The Main Characters Had To Make

Raven is involved in a lot of bad acts over the years. Typically, they’re during the events of wartime, like blowing up a bridge when the Grounders are attacking. While she can justify those actions as necessary, when the decisions get more personal for Raven, they become harder.

In the final season of the series, Raven is tasked with stopping the nuclear reactor on Sanctum from melting down. In order to do that, she sends a few Eligius prisoners into the room that holds the core to handle repairs, knowing that the exposure will likely kill them. Though she makes the decision to save everyone in Sanctum, she hates herself for it. Raven even welcomes it when Hatch’s wife comes to take her revenge.

5 Octavia: Becoming Blodreina

The 100 10 Hardest Decisions The Main Characters Had To Make

In the fourth season, Octavia Blake, the girl who hid under the floor on the Ark, becomes the unlikely leader of the Grounders. She wins the conclave for humanity’s survival and leads as many as possible into the bunker for safety from Praimfaya.

Octavia has never thought of herself as a leader. She’s always been someone caught between two different ways of life. Embracing the leadership role and fully taking on the persona of Blodreina to keep people in line in the bunker changes her. It’s a decision she makes out of necessity so that Wonkru can survive, but it’s one that haunts her when she returns to the same bunker.

4 Kane And Jaha: The Culling In The Bunker

The 100 10 Hardest Decisions The Main Characters Had To Make

Thanks to his political standing on the Ark, Kane makes some difficult decisions before ever making it to the ground. He’s one of the committee, along with Abby and Jaha, who decides to send 100 teenagers to Earth in the first place. One of the hardest decisions he has to make, however, actually happens on Earth, and again, he has Jaha to help him.

When Skaikru has to trim their nearly 500 people down to 100 to fit into the bunker, it doesn’t go well. Jaha and Clarke even take the bunker from Skaikru at one point. Jaha realizes the fighting is pointless, and he helps Kane knock out everyone in the bunker with gas so that they can remove people who aren’t among the 100 chosen to stay. It’s a tough job, and one that has them weighing the needs of survival as a whole against their humanity.

3 Echo: Becoming Echo

The 100 10 Hardest Decisions The Main Characters Had To Make

Before she’s known as Echo and the top spy for Azgeda, her name is Ash. Ash is being raised alongside a little girl named Echo, and the two friends are being trained to fight like Azgeda warriors. Ash has trouble with that.

When Queen Nia tells the two little girls that only one of them can survive, Ash decides to fight for her life. Not only does she win the fight, but she becomes Echo. It’s a difficult and traumatizing moment for Echo, one she doesn’t talk about until the final season.

2 Bellamy: Keeping His Faith

The 100 10 Hardest Decisions The Main Characters Had To Make

Like most of the characters in The 100, Bellamy faces a lot of difficult decisions on the series. Since most of the time he’s motivated by trying to stay alive or save his sister, those hard decisions come pretty easily. But the final season sees a very different challenge.

Bellamy, after getting stuck on Etherea with one of Cadogan’s Disciples, starts to understand their belief system. He becomes a believer, and when reunited with his friends, they don’t share his faith. Bellamy tries to make them understand, but they challenge him and refute his claims. It leads to Clarke and Bellamy taking opposite sides, and him having to choose between his newfound faith or the people he cares so much about. He chooses his faith.

1 Clarke: Shooting Bellamy

Clarke Griffin is the queen of hard decisions. She tries to find a way out of pulling the lever at Mount Weather, doesn’t hesitate to flip A.L.I.E.’s kill switch, and is ready to pull a gun on anyone who puts Madi in danger. It’s the latter that leads to her hardest decision in the show.

When faced with the possibility of Bellamy causing Madi to be brought before Cadogan and put in danger, Clarke threatens to kill him to keep him from doing it. Bellamy, true to his faith, doesn’t budge, and Clarke is left holding a smoking gun over her best friend’s body, leaving fans shocked at Bellamy’s ending.
