The 100s Anomaly & New Planet Explained How [SPOILER] Works

Warning: SPOILERS for The 100 season 7, episode 2.

The 100 season 7 has explained what the Anomaly really is and how it works, particularly regarding how it’s a bridge between worlds. It was clear from the get-go that the Anomaly was going to be a big part of the story in the show’s final season. The Anomaly was an important element of the world in The 100 season 6, but it mostly took a back seat to the conflict going on in Sanctum. It was left to a side story, with a couple characters who weren’t given the main focus going near the Anomaly.

The end of The 100 season 6 made it clear that there was going be a lot more of the Anomaly coming soon. The season ended on a cliffhanger, with Hope Diyoza (Shelby Flannery) emerging from the Anomaly. She stabbed Octavia (Marie Avgeropolous), who then disappeared and went back into the Anomaly. The 100 season 7 premiere saw people with very advanced technology coming out of the Anomaly and capturing Bellamy Blake (Bob Morley), leading to Hope, Echo (Tasya Teles), and Gabriel (Chuku Modu) going into the Anomaly to find him.

The 100 season 7, episode 2, “The Garden” explored the other side of the Anomaly and filled in a lot of the story that happened with Octavia, Hope, and Charmaine Diyoza (Ivana Milicevic). While there are still things left to be revealed, the episode filled in a lot. There are still mysteries, but what the Anomaly is, how it works, and where all of this might be going has become clearer now.

Eligius Missions & Planets Alpha & Beta Explained

The 100s Anomaly & New Planet Explained How [SPOILER] Works

The Eligius missions first became a part of the story in The 100 season 5, when the survivors of the Eligius IV mission came back to Earth. Eligius IV was an asteroid mining mission staffed by prisoners, led by Charmaine Diyoza, a notorious terrorist from the time before the nuclear apocalypse. They drove the main conflict in season 5, trying to claim the small bit of Earth that was still inhabitable. But they were Eligius IV, implying that there were more Eligius missions.

Early in The 100 season 5, Raven Reyes (Lindsey Morgan) discovers information on Eligius I and II, which were also mining missions. The files on Eligius III were encrypted, but Monty Green (Christopher Larkin) cracks it in the season 5 finale. Eligius III’s mission was focused on colonization, not mining. They went out into deep space to find another place for humanity to live. The Eligius III sent five teams to five different planets, referred to as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon. Alpha, which is actually a moon, not a planet, was settled and later became Sanctum, the main setting of The 100 season 6. Mission Team Alpha landed and the original families eventually became the Primes, the main antagonists of season 6. Mission Team Beta wasn’t quite as lucky.

“The Garden” reveals that the team crash-landed on Beta, leaving only a single survivor, Colin Benson. While they failed at colonizing Beta, it is survivable and can be reached from Alpha by going through the Anomaly. Diyoza goes into the Anomaly, followed shortly after by Octavia, and they both live there for about 10 years. While there, Diyoza’s daughter, Hope, is born, and she gives the planet its name: Skyring. There’s little information about the other planets that Eligius III set off to; one of them is Bardo, which is mentioned in “The Garden” as the place where the Disciples, the people who kidnapped Bellamy in the season 7 premiere, are based. The opening credits for this season also show two more, Etherea and Nakara, but without giving much detail on those.

Why Time Is Slower On Planet Beta, Skyring

While Gabriel was unable to get the code for the Anomaly out of Colin Benson’s mind/memory drive, he did get the answer to how time works on Skyring and why it’s so different than the others. According to Becca Franco (Erica Cerra) in those memories, all of the Eligius III worlds are in relatively close proximity to a black hole, which is why time gets weird there. Of all the planets, Skyring is further out from the black hole than the others. This leads to extreme time dilation, where time moves slower on Skyring compared to on Sanctum. In many ways, this is similar to part of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, in which visiting a planet near a black hole results in decades passing back on Earth in mere hours.

In The 100 season 6, episode 8, “The Old Man and the Anomaly”, Octavia goes into the Anomaly about six seconds after Diyoza, yet three months passed for Diyoza in that time. Octavia comes back out of the Anomaly just 12 seconds later, but over a decade passed in that time back on Sanctum. While the exact ratio is a little unclear, this does match well with time dilation and general relativity. The closer something is to a black hole, the slower time seems to pass there, relatively speaking. Sanctum would have to be quite close to the black hole, but time there would pass much more slowly compared to Skyring, which is much further out from the black hole.

The Anomaly Works As A Bridge Between Worlds

The 100s Anomaly & New Planet Explained How [SPOILER] Works

The black hole isn’t the only thing the Eligius III planets have in common. The Anomaly itself is present on all of the chosen planets, which is part of the reason why they were chosen for the missions in the first place. The Anomaly links all of these worlds together, and possibly more, making understanding and researching it a part of the colonization mission as well. Walking into the Anomaly will take whoever goes there to another world, as shown clearly in “The Garden”. It can also be controlled by using the Anomaly Stone, which no one on the show has been able to do consistently. How exactly it works and how it got there are prime questions to be answered in The 100 season 7.

There are still more unanswered questions about the Anomaly, which seems to be a lot more than simply a wormhole. Several characters have had visions related to it, such as Jordan and Russell, even while being nowhere near its location. Octavia and Hope suffered from amnesia when outside of the Anomaly, but remembered things once they were in it. Walking into the Anomaly also healed Octavia from a severe injury she obtained in season 6. None of this has been explained yet, meaning that while a lot of the mystery of the Anomaly has been solved, there’s still a lot left to cover about the Anomaly in future episodes of The 100.
