The 355 Trailer Jessica Chastain Leads A Team of Female Secret Agents

Jessica Chastain teams up with a star-studded cast of international agents, including Lupita Nyongo’o, Penelope Cruz, Diane Kruger and Fan Bingbing, to tackle an invisible enemy in the trailer for spy thriller The 355. Chastain also produced, collaborating with her X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg, who helmed and co-wrote the script with Theresa Rebeck (Catwoman) for this one. Kinberg has also worked with Fan previously, with the Chinese actor playing Blink in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The role is one of Fan’s first since her tax evasion charges in China, which led to her mysterious alleged disappearance for a number of months.

The movie is billed as an international spy thriller, which sees Chastain’s CIA Agent Mace Brown having to team up with a group of highly skilled fellow agents from around the world. Nyongo’o plays British MI6 computer specialist Khadijah, Kruger is German agent Marie, and Cruz is Graciela, a Colombian psychologist. Bingbing plays a mysterious woman called Lin Mi Sheng, who is tracking the agents as they embark on a rogue mission to track down a top-secret weapon that has fallen into the hands of a mercenary. The cast is rounded out by Marvel star Sebastian Stan and Edgar Ramirez.

Now, Universal has released the first trailer for The 355, showing off the kinetic action and stunt work in the movie. The trailer also teases that Chastain and her ensemble of butt-kicking agents are fighting an invisible enemy, teasing a new kind of villain. The focus here is firmly on the A-list cast of women, but there are glimpses of Stan and Ramirez in supporting roles, though it’s not entirely clear if they’re good or bad guys. The trailer was accompanied by a poster playing up the international focus of the movie, both of which can be seen below:

The trailer makes the movie look like an international spy thriller in the classic vein, featuring death-defying stunts like the Mission: Impossible series, globe-trotting antics like the 007 franchise, and gritty, realistic hand-to-hand combat of the type popularized by the Jason Bourne movies. Naturally, though, things are a little different, given the focus on the all-female cast, with their men being used as bargaining tools by the villain. While the cast can’t be faulted, there are worries about the behind-the-scenes talent on The 355.

Kingberg’s only previous directorial effort, after years of producing and writing on the X-Men series, was Dark Phoenix, a movie that is considered one of the worst blockbusters of all time, even by the director himself. Similarly, Rebeck’s previous blockbuster experience is pretty much limited to Catwoman, which has also been widely panned as one of the worst blockbusters of all time. Hopefully their efforts on this movie are more successful, and The 355 is able to give its stellar ensemble interesting material to work with.
