The 4 Different Harley Quinn Movies Explained

There may be as many as four separate Harley Quinn movies in development. Margot Robbie, who portrays the lovable former criminal psychologist turned psychopathic criminal in the DC Extended Universe, has recently reaffirmed that she is producing a ‘solo’ Harley spinoff that will be separate from the other three films featuring Dr. Quinzel that Warner Bros. and DC Films have already been revealed to be working on.

If this sounds confusing – or even insane – we’re here to help sort out the craziness. Here is a rundown of the four different Harley Quinn DCEU projects currently in development and when we’re likely to see Harley next on the big screen.

Suicide Squad 2 is planning to film in 2018, so this is the most likely bet for fans aching to see Harley again. Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant) has taken over the director’s chair, with the sequel looking to reunite Robbie’s Harley with the core group of the Worst Heroes Ever, including Will Smith/Deadshot and Jai Courtney/Captain Boomerang. Suicide Squad 2 is currently rumored to include the introduction of Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) in the DCEU as the target of the Squad’s newest mission.

HARLEY QUINN & THE JOKER

The 4 Different Harley Quinn Movies Explained

The on-screen reunion of Harley and her on-again/off-again beau Mr. J, played by Jared Leto, was revealed by Screen Rant over the summer. Since then, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the filmmakers behind Crazy, Stupid, Love, were tapped to direct Harley Quinn & The Joker, which was described as “an insane and twisted love story. When Harry Met Sally on benzedrine.”

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS

Suicide Squad director David Ayer remains tentatively attached to helm this all-Gotham bad girl team up, which would presumably co-star Catwoman and Poison Ivy, with the Joker also expected to appear. Quite a few actresses have expressed interest in the coveted role of Catwoman, including Elia Gonzalez (Baby Driver), Cailee Spaeny (Pacific Rim: Uprising) and Ming-Na Wen (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) However, Gotham City Sirens seems to have been back burner as development on Suicide Squad 2 is being fast-tracked.

SOLO HARLEY QUINN MOVIE

Shortly after her DCEU debut, it was announced Robbie was working on a spinoff for Harley that she’d executive produce. This is the project she recently was said to be actively working on. Due to the number of DC movies added to the docket recently, it had been presumed this one had fallen by the wayside or been assimilated, but Robbie revealed this project is “a totally separate one” from Harley & Joker and Gotham City Sirens.

Who knows which proposed Harley Quinn project could see the green light in the coming years? Possibly not even Robbie. For now, Suicide Squad 2 seems the safest bet considering it’s following up a film that was already a box office hit with audiences. Above all, one thing’s for sure: Robbie is as excited to return as Harley Quinn as fans are excited to see her.
