The Amazing Race The 5 Best Twists (& 5 Worst)

Even after running for 32 seasons, it’s safe to say there’s still no other show like The Amazing Race today. It’s arguably one of the most successful reality competition shows around. Of course, there may be similar shows out there. However, this one is particularly a favorite as it leaves audiences on the edge of their seats.

It films all around the world and puts several teams through various mental and physical challenges, before racing to meet host Phil Keoghan at the mat to win the $1 million prize in the end. Before they can succeed though, a team must also successfully get past any twist they encounter, the best and worst of which include:

10 Best: Two Legs, One Country

The Amazing Race The 5 Best Twists (& 5 Worst)

Typically, the show only does a single leg in every country it visits. Looking back at previous seasons though, there are clear exceptions. In some cases, the contestants check-in with Keoghan at the mat, only to be told that they are still racing. What’s great about this twist is that it truly pushes contestants to their limits.

One must remember that running one leg on this race is terribly exhausting by itself. And once teams are informed that they must keep racing, it forces them to summon every ounce of energy they have left to ultimately stay in the game.

9 Best: Double U-Turn

We have a lot of respect for twists on this show as these ensure that the race stays interesting. And if you ask the fans, the ‘Double U-Turn’ is a true game-changer. What’s so special about this? Well, just like the single U-Turn, teams who get singled out to serve this are forced to perform both sides of a Detour.

As the term suggests, a Double U-Turn allows for contestants to choose two teams, instead of one. Because the teams chosen take a longer time completing their Detour, this twist can also easily send a leading team to the back of the pack.

8 Best: Intersection

The Amazing Race The 5 Best Twists (& 5 Worst)

For most of the race, teams are expected to compete against each other until they end up at an Intersection. When this twist is imposed, they are forced to work with another team to complete a task. In some cases, it doesn’t really help as other teams can get ahead.

This seemed to be the case for The Amazing Race season 16 contestants, Brent and Caite, who paired up with Jordan and Jeff during the fourth leg. That said, it is also worth noting that the pair did well enough to finish the race in third place overall.

7 Best: Speed Bump

The Amazing Race The 5 Best Twists (& 5 Worst)

A Speed Bump is the consequence that a team must face after arriving last in a non-elimination leg. What’s interesting about this twist is that it is an additional challenge that can easily take a team out of the race for good if they don’t work correctly and/or efficiently.

Some teams who are forced to do a Speed Bump and fail also end up getting eliminated from the race. That said, one of the things that fans don’t know about the show is that eliminated teams get sequestered in a hotel, instead of sent home.

6 Best: Roadblock

The Amazing Race The 5 Best Twists (& 5 Worst)

Roadblocks, arguably, make or break a team’s chances of winning the entire race. Previous winners of The Amazing Race have struggled with this twist at one point. Perhaps, what’s challenging about this is that a team member must complete the Roadblock solo. And when this twist gets really creative, it can jeopardize the rest of the race for a team.

In fact, season 31 winners Colin Guinn and Christie Woods thought their race was over after Woods struggled to decode a World War II message in the penultimate leg.

5 Worst: Switchback

The Amazing Race The 5 Best Twists (& 5 Worst)

Switchback is essentially the show’s way of bringing back some of the most difficult challenges that contestants have encountered in the past. Throughout the show’s run, Switchbacks were done several times.

For instance, a Roadblock involving ringing phones that was presented to contestants back in season 15 served as a Roadblock again during season 30. Later on, in season 31, teams were asked to do some pole vaulting over a water ditch to be able to grab some eggs and cheeses. Though Switchbacks may be amusing, it is certainly better to introduce something new and unpredictable.

4 Worst: Yield

The Amazing Race The 5 Best Twists (& 5 Worst)

A Yield is, perhaps, one of the most brutal twists that The Amazing Race has to offer. By using a Yield, a team can readily force another team to stop racing for a specified period of time. Sure, it offers any team a good tactical advantage, especially when the fight has come down to two teams, who are trying not to check in the mat last.

However, this twist is also rather unfair because it disables one team by force. Wouldn’t it be better if the competition among teams stays tight throughout the entire season?

3 Worst: Express Pass

The Amazing Race The 5 Best Twists (& 5 Worst)

An Express Pass is typically given to the team that finishes in first place during the season’s first leg. We get it. The first leg is always special and whoever wins it may well stay at the top of the ranks, especially if they use an Express Pass at the right time.

With this twist, a team can readily choose to skip any task, which is just too convenient. In a race as intense as this one, it’s always fun to see contestants try to accomplish a Roadblock or Detour. And when they are able to skip it, it’s disappointing.

2 Worst: Detour

The Amazing Race The 5 Best Twists (& 5 Worst)

For the record, viewers see nothing wrong with the Detours becoming incredibly challenging. However, because a team may choose between one Detour or another, there is never any guarantee that the teams would opt for the more interesting option.

As far as Detours go, teams typically have a choice between a mental-focused or physically demanding task. And when they are allowed to play it ‘safe,’ the race can easily appear boring. Fortunately, there are U-turns that can force teams to perform both. That makes for a more interesting race indeed.

1 Worst: The Save

This twist acts more like a safety check since contestants who use a Save may be saved from elimination – even if they check in last during a leg. Such an advantage may be welcomed by participating teams. For audiences though, a twist like this would just make the race leg seem too easy.

Even more importantly, teams with the ability to use The Save may be led to think that finishing a leg as much as possible is no longer important. This, ultimately, would make for a boring race.
