SpiderMan Far From Home Exceeds Expectations With $185 Million Debut

Spider-Man: Far From Home exceeded expectations at the box office by earning $185 million domestically in its first six days. The latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which closes out Phase 3, was always thought to do well commercially. The franchise is the most popular in Hollywood right now, and just came off the record-shattering run of Avengers: Endgame. However, there were some questions as to how well Far From Home would do. Going into its extended “weekend” this Fourth of July holiday, analysts pegged it for around $150 million in the U.S.

That’s an impressive haul, but still concerning from a certain point of view since Spider-Man: Homecoming made $154 million in its first six days domestically. But when Far From Home came out of the gates with a record-breaking Tuesday on its opening day, it looked like it was going to have a larger start than initially anticipated. That’s precisely what happened, and the film is already a big hit.

According to Box Office Mojo, Far From Home brought in $185 million domestically during its first six days. $93.6 million of that total came during the traditional Friday-Sunday weekend. Globally, the film stands at $580 million, meaning it’s already turned a healthy profit off its $160 million production budget.

It’s no secret this summer has been pretty tough on major studio tentpoles. Several of them, most notably Dark Phoenix and Men in Black: International, fell way short of expectations and bombed at the box office. Even ones that were modest hits like Detective Pikachu didn’t make as much money as some people thought. Fortunately for Hollywood, balance has been restored a bit in the last few weeks. Toy Story 4 gave the marketplace a much-needed shot in the arm and has made $649.9 million worldwide so far, and now Far From Home is another bona fide smash. It probably isn’t a coincidence that both of those movies received positive reviews from critics and rode strong word-of-mouth into theaters.

As we reach the end of the 2019 summer movie season, the upswing should continue. Disney’s Lion King remake is poised to be a massive hit, as it’s generated a tremendous amount of buzz during its highly-visible marketing campaign. And while it won’t break any records, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood could be a sizable draw for its target demographic, thanks to Tarantino’s fan base and the pedigree of the cast. After a rough stretch, the multiplex is bouncing back and could conclude summer on a high note. Given how poor things looked about a month ago, that has to be considered a win.
