The long-awaited reboot of The Boondocks has been axed.

“I don’t know if this is breaking news, but, we’ve been wanting to do the show, but, Sony, they decided they’re gonna pull the plug, so, I don’t know,” actor Cedric Yarbrough (who voiced Tom DuBois) said during an appearance on 1-on-1 W/ Deuces. “Hopefully, maybe one day we’ll be able to revisit. If we don’t, then that’s what that is, but, I wish the show was coming back.” According to Deadline, Sony is still looking into other options for the property.

Created by Aaron McGruder and based on the comic strip of the same name, The Boondocks premiered Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim lineup in 2005 and ran four seasons and 55 episodes, ending in 2014. The show centered on two Black children — Riley and Huey — who lived with their grandfather in a predominantly white suburban town, which set the stage for much of the show’s satirical social commentary.

In 2019, it was announced that The Boondocks would return with a 50-minute special and two 24-episode seasons. “There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today,” McGruder said at the time. “It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now – both politically and culturally – more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun.”

As recently as June 2021, it was believed that the Boondocks revival was still in the works thanks to a set of leaked artwork.
