The Avengers Most Dangerous Villain Just Offered a GRAVE Warning

The Avengers and Defenders already had their hands full with Diablo pulling cards from the deck of fate, controlling the heroes for his own gains. With that conflict ongoing, a bigger one just popped up and it’s a doozy: Kang the Conquerer has just offered a dire prophecy.

In Tarot #2, evil mastermind Diablo has seized control of almost all of the Avengers and uses them to attack Namor and the other Defenders. Valkyrie fights an ensnared Thor by herself until Hulk arrives to give her a hand. The two heroes fall under Diablo’s spell. Apparently he has discovered a way to turn heroes into his slaves by using ink from Ish’lzog and drawing their likeness onto blank tarot cards.

However, Hulk is able to escape Diablo’s mind control as he transforms back into his Bruce Banner persona. He manages to regroup with a badly damaged Vision and the two start coming up with a plan. For somebody who went to all of the trouble to capture some of the world’s most powerful superheroes, Diablo’s goals don’t seem very lofty at first. He sends Silver Surfer on a trip to bring him back the best cup of coffee he ever had. It feels like a waste of the Surfer’s immense powers, but we have to admit if we had the power to turn somebody like Doctor Strange into our very own Postmates driver, we probably would.

Diablo doesn’t get much of a chance to enjoy his victory coffee since Kang the Conqueror shows up. The time-traveling villain warns the heroes that Diablo is the one “responsible for the end of all that is or was.” He begs the Avengers to kill Diablo and to “reverse this moment” before he is presumably pulled back into the timeline where he came from. Banner and Vision put their heads together and eventually figure out that Diablo can only control the mind of someone if he draws that specific person. So the pair suit up in different hero uniforms, Vision disguises himself as Yellowjacket while Banner becomes Ant-Man. Their gambit catches Diablo by surprise and Banner destroys the device Diablo used to remotely see the heroes he trapped.

Diablo escapes but by doing so he creates a rift, opening a door to the Beyond dimension. Doctor Strange thinks fast and enters the Beyond, closing the gateway as he does and trapping himself inside. Understandably, this leaves the Avengers and Defenders scratching their heads. Captain America still has no memory of becoming the Hulk during the World War II battle Namor mentioned. Not only that but now the two superhero teams have to decipher what Kang’s message was and why one of their oldest enemies came to help them? Between Kang’s cryptic warning and the flashback of Captain America hulking out, writer Alan Davis is delivering a fascinating mystery for Marvel’s heroes to solve. And we’d be remiss not to mention the gorgeous artwork by Paul Renaud and vibrant colors of Paul Mounts. Keep your eye on this series.
