The Bachelor Franchise’s Biggest Breakups in 2021

While 2020 was full of long-time couples calling it quits, 2021 included a handful of newer relationships that couldn’t make it to the altar.

This past year was not a good year for couples who recently got engaged on The Bachelor franchise. Following a 2020 in which some long-time couples, like Becca Kufrin and Garrett Yrigoyen, Ashley Hebert and JP Rosenbaum, and Carly Waddell and Evan Bass, decided to call it quits, some fresher relationships in 2021 proved they were not built to last.

It is no secret at this point that a couple that ends up together on a Bachelor show is almost certainly going to break up at some point, usually sooner rather than later. That’s simply the nature of the show; couples who choose to get engaged don’t know each other that well and they realize that once they enter the real world.

Despite all the heartbreak of this past year, the most recent season of Bachelor In Paradise has thus far proved successful in playing matchmaker, as all three couples that got engaged are still together to this day. That’s more an anomaly than the norm in Bachelor Nation, so it deserves to be celebrated. Now, let’s get to all the engagements that did not last.

Clare Crawley & Dale Moss

Clare and Dale’s relationship had experienced a number of ups and downs since Clare decided to end her season early to be with the former NFL player last year. They briefly split and then got back together, attempting to balance lives that were located on opposite coasts, but they could never make it work. While there were no obvious signs it wouldn’t work when they gave their relationship another shot, ultimately they weren’t on the same page long term. It’s only been a few months since they’ve split, and there’s already two other former Bachelorettes who have endured a breakup since then.

Katie Thurston & Blake Moynes

Katie Thurston and Blake Moynes had an uphill battle to climb from the beginning, since Blake’s job takes him abroad quite often. It makes it hard for two people who don’t know each other that well to start a life together as an engaged couple. It was too much for Katie, and the two broke up only a handful of months after her season stopped airing. Blake was clearly heartbroken, since this is now the third woman he’s dated on The Bachelorette (the other two are listed in this story!) and now he’s back to square one.

Meanwhile, Katie has moved on about as quickly as possible. She’s now dating John Hersey, whom she eliminated in week 2 of her season. She had been open about their friendship, but clearly there was something more to it than that. Given the drama of how her season ended, it’s no surprise she was ready to move on from someone she might not have even wanted to pick in the end anyway and start fresh with someone new… even though she initially rejected him.

Tayshia Adams & Zac Clark

A post shared by Tayshia Adams (@tayshia)

There will never be a sweeter proposal on The Bachelorette than Zac Clark getting down on one knee to ask Tayshia Adams to marry him. He was a fan favorite because of all that he’d overcome and because he seemed a little more normal than the ready-made influencers who the show usually casts. Tayshia lived in Los Angeles and Zac resides in New York City, but Tayshia was craving a taste of Manhattan life so it worked out.

The details surrounding their recent breakup are still somewhat uncertain, and the emotions are clearly still raw from Tayshia. The last activity the two participated in together publicly was the New York City Marathon. A few weeks later, news broke the two were done. Zac still hasn’t spoken out publicly about the split, indicating it likely is hitting him hard as well. Tayshia got emotional on Men Tell All when she revealed it was over and has only recently returned to posting on social media. This breakup wasn’t easy to swallow for fans who were hoping that at least one of the Bachelorette leads could end up with the man they chose.

Matt James & Rachael Kirkconnell*

Fortunately, one couple that would up together on a season of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette is still together, but it didn’t come without its rough patches for Matt James and Rachael Kirkconnell. On After the Final Rose, Matt detailed why the two couldn’t stay together, mentioning the well-documented controversy that swirled around their season. After the online attacks and constant rumors surrounding the relationship died down, the two decided to give their relationship another try. After overcoming speed bumps, the pair seems like they’re going strong. While Matt was maligned for not being as well-versed in Bachelor Nation as past leads, he has made it work with the woman he proposed to at the end of the season. If he and Rachael get married, he will become only the second leading man in 26 tries to do so, following Sean Lowe.

Chris Harrison & The Franchise

A post shared by Chris Harrison (@chrisbharrison)

Chris Harrison recently got engaged to entertainment host Lauren Zima, following a breakup more dramatic than anything you’ve seen before earlier this year. That’s right, Chris, the long-time host of The Bachelor franchise, and the show broke up after nearly 20 years together. His departure sparked a debate about whether his actions warranted a dismissal. Chris leaving the show gave Kaitlyn Bristowe and Tayshia Adams an opportunity to host the past two seasons of The Bachelorette, a show that always should have been hosted by a woman anyway.

Beginning in 2022, former Bachelor lead and current sports commentator Jesse Palmer will take over the role of Bachelor host. He likely won’t be too much different than Chris, especially since the host role is minimal and the scripts they use (teasing unprecedented drama and the “final rose tonight”) are already baked into the franchise at this point.

Chris was likely ready to move on from the show anyway; if he wasn’t, he wouldn’t have been so hostile to Rachel Lindsay during that now infamous Extra interview. There are conversations that needed to be had in 2021 that Chris was clearly unwilling to be a part of, and we’re seeing many of those conversations happen on Michelle Young’s season. The separation of Chris and The Bachelor may have been the messiest breakup of the year, but it was for the best.
