SpiderMans Clone Scarlet Spider Returns To Marvel

In a new preview from Marvel Comics, one of Spider-Man’s clones is making a return to the Marvel Universe: The Scarlet Spider. However, Ben Reilly won’t actually be featured in an upcoming issue of The Amazing Spider-Man. Instead, he’ll be backing up Iron Man, as Tony Stark will be assembling a team of heroes that are under the radar; those on the fringes of the superhero community so as not to alert the notice of Korvac. All things considered, the Scarlet Spider certainly fits that bill.

Korvac is one of the Master Intellects of the Universe according to Iron Man, and if he wants to have any chance of stopping him and saving his best friend James Rhodes (War Machine), he’s going to need some backup. Thus far, Tony has had Patsy Walker (Hellcat) to team up with as well as to help keep him grounded and his ego in check. However, Hellcat was injured by Korvac in their most recent encounter, and she’s now gained some sort of connection to the powerful villain. While she can sometimes hear his voice in her head, Korvac can also control and manipulate her, creating a need for Tony to find a tailor-fit team to help him out. It has to be a team of heroes that can be united covertly, as the element of surprise is really the only advantage Iron Man has in this scenario. He can’t just call the Avengers and X-Men without risking Rhodey’s life in the process.

This will lead to the reintroduction of the Scarlet Spider, the first ever clone of Spider-Man Peter Parker, who’s apparently low-profile enough that Korvac couldn’t possibly be aware of him coming to assist Tony. This tracks pretty well, as the Scarlet Spider has indeed been laying low, trying to redeem himself for his actions under the guise of the Jackal in the Dead No More storyline from 2016. According to the preview from Marvel Comics, he’s also been working the night shift at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Here’s the the synopsis and preview pages for Iron Man #5:

Apparently, it seems as though Ben Reilly didn’t have much else going on, so he was more than available to lend a hand and provide Iron Man with some back-up. This is one of the first times readers have seen Scarlet Spider since his solo series that spun out of Dead No More and his subsequent appearance in Spider-Geddon in 2018. He’ll be joining detective Mistry Knight, Gargoyle, and the incredibly obscure Frog Man on the team.

While it seems doubtful that Korvac will see Iron Man and his new team coming, it will be interesting to see if they’ll actually be able to hold their own against the power supervillain and his own team. There’s reasons why they’re off the radar and lower tier after all. In any case, it may not even matter: the synopsis indicates that Iron Man may end up risking everything by attempting to take on Korvac by himself regardless. Here’s hoping Scarlet Spider and the rest of his new allies will be able to help save the day before Iron Man gets in the way of his own efforts to save the Marvel Universe.
