The Batman Jeffrey Wrights Jim Gordon May Not Be Gothams Police Commissioner

Some sneaky casting news for The Batman suggests Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon might not be Gotham’s police commissioner quite yet. The Batman is currently one of DC’s most anticipated projects despite not coming out for another year. Following last year’s Joker, the film will be the latest DC film set outside the DCEU, with Robert Pattinson taking over the role following Ben Affleck’s stint as the Caped Crusader. Affleck was initially primed to direct and star in The Batman, but eventually left the project altogether, allowing Warner Bros. to take it in a new direction.

Matt Reeves is now directing and has cast a slew of actors to fill in a supporting cast made up of some of Batman’s most well-known adversaries. Colin Farrell was recently confirmed to be playing Penguin, while Paul Dano will suit up as The Riddler. Meanwhile, John Turturro will play Carmine Falcone, and Zoë Kravitz will step into the role of Catwoman. Production has been underway for a few weeks now, and fans have eagerly followed along via set photos offering glimpses of the cast. While he hasn’t been seen on set yet, Wright announced his arrival in Gotham not long ago. When he was cast as Jim Gordon, many assumed he would be, as per the comics, Gotham’s commissioner. However, that might not be the case.

According to Comicbook.com, IMDbPro has listed Alex Ferns as playing Commissioner Pete Savage. This looks like an original character for the film, and he could be Gordon’s predecessor. If that’s the case, then fans might get the chance to see Gordon’s journey to becoming commissioner, which admittedly has already been seen onscreen in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. Still, Reeves’ The Batman is supposed to offer a fresh take on Batman, so perhaps Gordon’s story will be new as well.

Very little is known about The Batman’s plot, but Reeves has stated before that he wants to shed more light on Batman’s detective side, and that the film will have a noir-ish feel. It will be interesting to see how the plot manages to incorporate the film’s many characters, especially since a good number of them are villains. The few set photos that have emerged have already sparked a great deal of speculation, and that’s only going to increase in the months going forward.

Since Batman is a character who has been depicted many, many times in film before, Reeves’ take is under a great deal of scrutiny. So far, fans seem very excited for The Batman thanks to its promising cast and Reeves’ past comments about the project. Wright’s casting as Gordon was especially praised, and regardless of whether he’s playing Gordon as commissioner or not, it’ll be a pleasure to see him in the role. Hopefully more plot details will be revealed soon to tide fans over until 2021.
