The Best Episode of Futurama From Each Season Ranked (According to IMDB)

Born from the mind of legendary cartoonist, writer, and animator Matt Groening, Futurama can easily be called one of the greatest adult animated shows of all time. The science-fiction serial ran from 1999 to 2003 then from 2008 to 2013, and chronicles the exploits of the Planet Express delivery crew in the 31st century.

The Planet Express crew founded by the eccentric Professor Farnsworth is comprised of Phillip Fry, a delivery boy from the year 2000, Bender the foul-mouthed robot, Leela the one-eyed captain of the ship, Amy the rich Martian, Hermes the Jamaican accountant, and Zoidberg the lobster-like alien physician. The eclectic comedy ran for 140 episodes comprised of eight seasons on DVD and four films (which would be broken into four episodes each). Here are the best episodes from each season, ranked according to IMDB.

9 “Fun on a Bun” (Season 7 Episode 8): 7.7

“Fun on a Bun” was written by Dan Vebber and has the Planet Express crew visit Oktoberfest as a vacation. However, in the 31st century, Oktoberfest has become a refined, sophisticated event, much to Fry’s chagrin. Meanwhile, Bender, in an effort to win a sausage-making contest, uses wooly mammoth meat which leads to a lost Neanderthal colony to attack the German beer fest. The episode has been recognized as notably memorable in the otherwise comparatively lackluster later seasons of Futurama. “Fun on a Bun” contains two original songs by polka band Brave Combo (and one cover of “The Chicken Dance”).

8 Bender’s Big Score (Movie): 7.7

Written by Ken Keeler and released on November 27, 2007, Bender’s Big Score was the first Futurama production after the original series finale. The Planet Express crew is perturbed when a time travel code is found tattooed on Fry’s body and a race of alien scammers infect Bender with a virus that makes him go back into the past and steal valuable treasure. Bender’s Big Score was a huge success, selling over 222,000 DVDs in its first week and winning the Annie Award for Best Home Entertainment Production. Interestingly, Bender’s Big Score was the first carbon-neutral DVD to be released by 20th Century Fox.

Fry is faced with a moral dilemma when his criminal best friend Bender is recognized by the Future Crimes Division as inevitably going to commit a crime. The episode parodies several science-fiction classics, most notably Minority Report (2002).

6 “The Problem with Popplers” (Season 2 Episode 15): 8.6

Verrone and Darin Henry, both “original and inspired.” In this episode, the Planet Express crew discovers a delicious, unidentified, edible life form. Due to their addictive taste, the crew decides to sell them, quickly achieving a billion sold.

Unfortunately, these “popplers” turn out to be the larval form of Omicronian aliens who want revenge for their eaten young. The title of this episode is a reference to the Star Trek episode “The Trouble with Tribbles.”

Creator Matt Groening called “The Late Phillip J. Fry” his favorite episode of the season. However, when they clumsily overshoot their one-minute test they are forced to keep going forward until a backwards time machine is invented. The Best Episode of Futurama From Each Season Ranked (According to IMDB)

Written by Rob Weiner, “The Luck of the Fryrish” is another contender for the fan-favorite episode, as well as the most poignant of the series. When Fry discovers that his lucky seven leaf clover has been stolen from the ruins of his Old New York home he sets out to grave rob it from his brother Yancy’s tomb, believing him to be the culprit. The story moves back and forth between the 21st and 31st centuries in order to unfold the truth about the clover, an idea that was inspired by the simultaneous telling of two stories at different times in The Godfather Part II. For this episode, Rob Weiner won the Annie Award for “outstanding individual achievement for writing in an animated television production.”

1 “Jurassic Bark” (Season 4 Episode 7): 9.6

“Jurassic Bark,” written by Eric Kaplan, is one of the most poignant and consistently highly ranked episodes of the series. In this episode, Fry finds the fossilized remains of his beloved dog Seymour in a museum and seeks the Professor’s help to bring him back to life, much to jealous Bender’s irritation. “Jurassic Bark” was met with universal critical acclaim, often topping fan-selected lists of the best episode, and was nominated for an Emmy award, narrowly losing to The Simpsons episode” Three Gays of the Condo.” Five years later the movie Bender’s Big Score would revisit the episodes ending, contextualizing it in a much happier light.
