Singing competition series have been on the air for decades, dating all the way back to the days of Star Search. And today, plenty of innovative shows that put their own twist on the concept continue to pop up on linear network television channels and streaming services. From a focus on mentoring aspiring singers to highlighting terrible ones and even disguising who the person is behind a voice, it seems like every concept has been done.

There are tons of reality competition shows of all kinds on television nowadays, from dating to cooking. But when it comes to the best singing shows, this particular genre takes the cake in terms of variety, not to mention celebrity appeal.

Updated on October 21st, 2021 by Christine Persaud: Fan appetite for TV singing competitions has never waned as viewers love seeing singers of all kinds, whether they’re aspiring singers with talent (and even some who need to work on their craft) to celebrities who wear elaborate customer to see if fans can guess their identity.

With shows like The Voice attracting megastars like Ariana Grande and John Legend as judges, it’s clear that the next generation of music superstars might be molded on one of these shows. Music inherently makes people feel good, so the continued interest in singing shows on TV is no surprise.

9 American Idol (2002-2016, 2018-Present) – 4.1

American Idol is largely considered to be the most influential reality singing competition series of this generation. It is certainly the one that has introduced singers who have gone on to enjoy the most success, like Kelly Clarkson, – American Idol’s first-ever winner – Carrie Underwood, and even those who didn’t win like Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson.

Yet somehow, viewers give American Idol a pretty low overall ranking. This is likely more representative of recent versus older seasons. The show has gone through a lot of changes, most notably American Idol has seen a revolving door of judges, landing for the last few seasons on Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan. The show was also canceled by Fox in 2016 only to be revived by ABC in 2018, which remains its current home.

8 I Can See Your Voice (2020-Present) – 5.7

Ken Jeong hosts this unconventional competition series, which is more a game show than it is a competition for singers. Rather, players try to guess who the talented and less than stellar singers are among a group without ever hearing them sing. It’s all based on their lip-syncing, mannerisms, occupation, dress, and other details revealed about their life. A celebrity panel of judges helps each player by providing their insight. It’s typically the credible analysis the judges provide to back up their advice, like that the person was tapping the mic while they sang or that their breathing didn’t match the lyrics, that truly helps the player re-think their decision.

Adapted from a South Korean show, I Can See Your Voice has also done well thanks to the hilarious hosting by Ken Jeong, who, fun fact, is one of a handful of celebrities fans might not know have an advanced degree.

7 America’s Got Talent (2006-Present) – 5.8

While America’s Got Talent is technically not a singing competition show, a significant percentage of the talent featured on the show is singers, not to mention the majority of winners from previous seasons.

Based on the British original, Britain’s Got Talent, America’s Got Talent premiered in 2006 with the intention of highlighting all kinds of talents, from magicians to ventriloquists, dance crews, and, yes, singers. Like American Idol, another show under Simon Cowell’s purview, America’s Got Talent has seen a number of celebrity judges through its run, including Cowell himself who is on the current roster.

6 The Masked Singer (2019-Present) – 5.9

Easily the most bizarre show on the list, celebrities don elaborate costumes to hide their identity on The Masked Singer, then take to the stage to perform various songs and sometimes dance routines. The panel of judges and viewers at home listens to vague clues, often designed to misdirect and try and guess the identity of the famous person. Some contestants are actual singers while others can’t sing very well, and many The Masked Singer contestants have a secret talent for singing even though they are famous for working in another industry, like acting or comedy.

Hosted by Nick Cannon, who has hosted many shows through his career, it’s a fun series that is enjoyed by entire families who love to listen intently, take notes, and share their guesses. Since it premiered in 2019, The Masked Singer has become a massive hit, even spawning a spin-off, The Masked Dancer.

5 Sing On! (2020-Present) – 6.3

• Available on Netflix

Netflix has thrown its hat into the singing competition ring with this one hosted by Tituss Burgess that debuted in September 2020 and is technically more one of many popular game shows on Netflix than it is a singing competition show. The premise of Sing On! is unique in that six players must perform five songs with the same theme but do so together. And there’s a catch: they have to sing their assigned lines from each song in a randomly assigned order.

It’s easy to get thrown off, but each person is only as strong as the next on their team. Sing On! has been compared to The Weakest Link, but with singing. The show has not officially been renewed by the streaming service but it hasn’t yet been canceled either.

4 The Voice (2011-Present) – 6.5

Despite The Voice not producing as many high-profile stars as American Idol, it still ranks much higher among viewers. Interestingly, though, much of the appeal of the show is the hilarious and witty banter among the four judges, which have included names like Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, John Legend, Nick Jonas, mainstay Blake Shelton, and, most recently, Ariana Grande.

The idea is to strip any biases about what a person looks like out of the equation by having the judges’ backs turned to them during the initial auditions. Once each judge has their team, they provide one-on-one coaching to help get their singers to the end, making the series more like a competition among judges than it is a competition for the singers. The Voice continues to receive accolades, with Emmy nominations as well.

3 Lip Sync Battle (2015-Present) – 7.3

• Available on Paramount+

While this series hasn’t been on since its fifth season aired in 2019, it hasn’t been canceled either. Lip Sync Battle will reportedly be moved to another network, though no official announcement has been made to date.

With that said, the series, based on a short sketch that first appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and produced by Fallon along with John Krasinski and Stephen Merchant, is actually the complete opposite of a singing competition show. Rather, two celebrities compete against one another to see who can put on the most exciting, entertaining lip-syncing performance. So even though there’s no actual singing, there’s a lot of pretend singing, with one person crowned a winner at the end.

2 Rhythm + Flow (2019) – 7.7

• Available on Netflix

Premiering on Netflix in 2019, the focus of Rhythm + Flow is on singers within a specific genre – rap – who are coached and critiqued by the panel of judges that includes hip hop artists Cardi B, Chance the Rapper, and Tip “T.I.” Harris.

Not only was this show Netflix’s first original music competition show, but it is also one of the first major music competition series to focus on rap. And because Netflix does not adhere to the same censorship regulations as network television, profanity is permitted in lyrics. While Rhythm + Flow has gotten the green light for a second season, there’s no confirmed premiere date just yet.

1 Songland (2019-2020) – 8.0

The twist in this reality singing competition series is that it isn’t just about the singing, but more so about another important, but often disregarded, aspect of the business: songwriting. Viewers get to see the entire creative process as contestants work with producers and famous artists to write, produce, and perform a new song.

The series, which was created by David A. Stewart, a former band member of Eurythmics, features Ester Dean, Ryan Tedder, and Shane McAnally as judges. There has not yet been confirmation of a third season but the show hasn’t officially been canceled either.
