The Big Bang Theory 10 Things About Sheldon That Have Aged Poorly

Sheldon Cooper is the de facto lead in The Big Bang Theory, a brilliant but egotistical theoretical scientist with a list of quirks that would make Sherlock Holmes cringe. Sheldon can be pretty caring about his friends, but he comes off as intolerant and even obnoxious most of the time.

Indeed, at times it is uncertain why anyone would be friends with him. Sheldon is inappropriate, rude, condescending, and unnecessarily mean, attitudes that become especially noticeable in hindsight. And while he is a very entertaining and funny character, crucial to Big Bang’s success, many of his behaviors have aged like milk.

His Dynamic With His Friends

Sheldon is far from a good friend. He constantly critiques and berates his friends to the point of humiliation. His scorn is particularly harsh on Howard and Penny in the early seasons, but he is rude to all of them in practically every episode. Indeed, Sheldon delivers some of the most scathing insults in The Big Bang Theory.

In one memorable episode, Sheldon is so rude and ungrateful to all of them while being sick that they all get angry and refuse to invite him to a weekend getaway they’re planning. Sheldon’s meanness doesn’t necessarily come from a bad place, but his behavior is reprehensible nonetheless.

His Abusive Relationship With Leonard

Leonard and Sheldon’s friendship is one of The Big Bang Theory’s cornerstones. The two are always there for each other, and in later episodes, Sheldon begins to be more open about his feelings for Leonard, even expressing genuine affection at times.

However, he still puts Leonard through hell and back. During one particularly infamous episode, Sheldon smashes a cake on Leonard’s face for a video he’s making. His behavior towards his bespectacled friend is borderline abusive, and it’s sometimes confusing how Leonard puts up with him.

His Treatment Of Amy

Besides Leonard, Sheldon’s most significant relationship is with Amy. The two have a bizarre but ultimately loving dynamic that rests on Amy’s saint-like patience for Sheldon’s shenanigans. She makes extreme compromises to accommodate him, but her efforts often go unnoticed.

In one episode, Sheldon refuses to acknowledge Amy’s achievements by saying they’re in the field of Biology, which is all about “yucky squishy things.” On another occasion, he refuses to accompany Amy to a family reunion because he chooses to stay with his friends playing. Sheldon does love Amy very much, but he treats her terribly, and their relationship comes off as toxic multiple times.

His Bullying Of Howard

Even Sheldon’s most passionate fans agree that he was a jerk to Howard. The engineer begins The Big Bang Theory as a creepy and obnoxious man-child but evolves into a responsible and loving husband and father of two. He even becomes an astronaut and travels to space, something his friends resent.

Everyone is mean to each other on Big Bang, but Sheldon is especially cruel to Howard. Even when he supposedly pays him a compliment, Sheldon can’t help but claim that what Howard does “isn’t worth doing.” Sheldon’s hatred for engineering and geology never made sense, and neither does his contempt for Howard.

His Lack Of Personal Boundaries

Sheldon doesn’t seem to know the meaning of the word “no.” Because of his overly literal and analytical mind, Sheldon only occasionally understands sarcasm, fails to grasp the intricacies of social interactions, and often gets in trouble because of it.

Most of his idols, such as Leonard Nimoy, Carl Sagan and Stan Lee, have restraining orders against him. In one episode, Sheldon even invites himself to Stan Lee’s house to watch the football game. Sheldon also becomes an unwanted third wheel in Leonard and Penny’s relationship, becoming a substitute child. These types of invasive behaviors are becoming less popular, making Sheldon seem extra problematic.

The Crass Jokes Made At His Expense

As previously mentioned, Sheldon is socially awkward on The Big Bang Theory and overly literal. Whenever someone makes a joke at his expense or straight-up laughs at him, he usually doesn’t understand it until someone spells it out for him. When Howard dresses up as him for Halloween, he doesn’t even get it at first.

The show uses this unfortunate trait to make some very cheap jokes at Sheldon’s expense. During the show’s 100th episode, while playing a board game, Sheldon keeps referring to “wood” and making comments that come off as innuendo, much to Raj and Howard’s entertainment. These types of jokes are tired and plain unfunny and a sign that the show is a product of the early 200s, carrying all the worst tropes of the time.

His Overblown Ego

Sheldon is confident to the point of narcissism. He thinks himself superior to others, refuses to take responsibility for his actions, is incapable of recognizing when he’s wrong, and his pride often reaches stratospheric heights.

To make matters worse, Sheldon’s overblown ego doesn’t come off as quirky or charming, especially when he uses it to justify his awful behavior. In season one, during the Physics Bowl, his snobbish behavior prevents him from accepting the answer of a janitor he recruited to his team, even though the answer is correct. Overtly selfish characters can be fun, but Sheldon’s infatuation with himself has aged rather poorly.

His Casual Racism

The Big Bang Theory’s use of casual racism as a source of humor is one of the things current audiences hate most about the show. For example, practically every character makes fun of Raj’s background, and Sheldon is no exception. Sheldon often makes passing comments about Raj’s culture, at times even outright mocking it.

He is also highly insensitive to others, at one point even suggesting LeVar Burton dresses as a swastika for an episode of Fun With Flags. Again, Sheldon’s ignorance isn’t necessarily malicious, but it is ridiculous, especially when he is supposedly so vastly intelligent.

His Behavior At Work

In hindsight, Sheldon should’ve been fired since season one. He behaves wildly inappropriately in his workplace, engaging in petty fights with co-workers like Barry Kripke and behaving in often ridiculous ways. In one episode, Howard forces him to dress in an inappropriate maid outfit and walk around the cafeteria.

However, Sheldon’s most shocking moments in The Big Bang Theory often happen in his office. For example, he has a cringe-worthy conversation with his assistant, Alex, while trying to dissuade her from flirting with Leonard. Appropriate workplace behavior is more important than ever, and looking back at Sheldon’s behavior is enough to make anyone want to slap some sense into him.

His Treatment Of Mrs. Davis

Speaking of Sheldon’s terrible workplace behavior, every single interaction he has with Mrs. Davis is objectively awful. Played by Academy Award winner Regina King, Mrs. Davis is Caltech’s head of HR and the victim of one too many of Sheldon’s ridiculous comments.

During their most infamous interaction, Sheldon crosses the line and makes some very insensitive jokes that weren’t funny then, much less now. Later, he tries to apologize by giving her a box set of the miniseries Roots, not understanding why he’s being inappropriate. Sheldon’s interactions with Mrs. Davis are the worst part of Big Bang by far, and a stain the show and the character will never wipe out.
