The Big Bang Theory 5 Characters Wed Want On Our Team In The Zombie Apocalypse (& 5 We Wouldnt)

If there’s one thing The Big Bang Theory’s gang love, it’s a heated (and completely unnecessary) debate about a comic book conundrum or movie mystery. What happens if a zombie doesn’t get enough human brains/flesh to eat? Are zombies and mummies essentially the same thing? The boys have spent whole Caltech lunch hours on such topics.

When it comes to the shambling undead, then, it might seem as though they’d know their stuff and that the characters and their various doctorates would be great assets to have on your side in a zombie apocalypse. The thing is, though, that’s not necessarily true. Here are our picks for a zombie apocalypse team.

10 We’d Want: Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz

Howard’s long-suffering wife is concrete proof that you should never judge a book by its cover. This sweet, petite lady looks like she wouldn’t harm a fly, but when the chips are down, she’s a real firecracker.

Bernadette has been seen to put absolutely everybody in her place, even Sheldon, with her fierce temper and incredible will. Woe betide any zombie who tries to mess with her. She offers more than just sheer tenacity and stubbornness, too, as a brilliant microbiologist who could really contribute to the survivors’ cause.

9 We Wouldn’t Want: Mary Cooper

As we see throughout The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon and his mother have a super complicated relationship. She’s a loving mother who truly wants to connect with and understand her son, but Sheldon confounds her at every turn. They’re so incredibly different.

One trait they share in common, though, is a likely inability to cope with the reality of a zombie apocalypse. The kindly Mary is one of those survivors who is likely to either panic and put herself in danger or step into said danger willingly for somebody else.

8 We’d Want: Debbie Wolowitz

It’s funny how the women in Howard’s life tend to be the toughest, most resilient, absolutely zero nonsense around, isn’t it? His wife is a formidable and utterly unstoppable woman, and his mother was definitely cut from the same cloth.

The immovable object that is Debbie Wolowitz was never presented as one who cared a great deal for others. Judging by Howard’s illuminating description of the unseen woman, though, there’s no doubt that it would take a lot of zombie strength to overpower her. With all the time she spent snugly ensconced in her home, she could probably make it quite the fortress if need be.

7 We Wouldn’t Want: Sheldon Cooper

Now, this may be a bit of a controversial pick. After all, the brightest mind on the show (self-proclaimed, much of the time, but it’s tough to argue) could probably whip up a death ray, laser defenses or ingenious plan to get a band of desperate survivors out of any predicament. Anything to protect his precious spot on the couch.

While that may be true, the issue with Sheldon is that he doesn’t cope well with pressure or time constraints. He doesn’t cope at all with them, in fact, meaning that the concept of transferring one of his brilliant ideas into reality often stymies him. This is time you don’t have when a ravenous band of zombies is chewing through your apartment door, and we can just imagine his hilarious, terrified, arm-waving shrieks when they did get in.

6 We’d Want: Zack Johnson

Ah, Zack. Sweet, agreeable Zack. Over the course of The Big Bang Theory, we met several of Penny’s ex-boyfriends, such as Kurt, the stereotypical jock who was as physically imposing and strong as he was cruel. While Zack Johnson is a well-built man, his personality is absolutely nothing like Kurt’s.

Zack is super nice, friendly and less than the brightest bulb in the box (think Friends’ Joey Tribbiani), the sort of person you’d need in any plucky group of zombie apocalypse survivors. He takes on the dangerous jobs just for everyone else’s sake, he keeps morale up, he carries the heavy supplies others struggle with. He may also suffer a grim, heart-wrenching death that strengthens the resolve of the rest of the group and ultimately saves their lives.

5 We Wouldn’t Want: Stuart Bloom

Lots of us, especially horror fans, like to think that we’d be fairly well prepared for a zombie apocalypse. We’ve watched zombie movies, we’ve binged every season of The Walking Dead, we’ve played every Resident Evil video game and even watched all the questionable films. Bring it on, right?

The fact of the matter, though, is that almost everybody would lose their heads entirely in the face of such real-life terror. The mild-mannered Stuart may have an intimate knowledge of every zombie-related comic book out there, but in the face of a real-life outbreak? We don’t think he’d have much chance of survival.

4 We’d Want: Leonard Hofstadter

Here’s an interesting thing: we’ve deemed Leonard more of a likely zombie apocalypse than Sheldon. Why’s that? Let’s take a look.

Leonard may not be as outright smart as Sheldon (the latter reminds him of this about sixteen times a day), but he still has a brilliant mind. Most importantly, though, he won’t get bogged down in the raw science of it all and is able to adjust his plans and train of thought on the fly, a concept that’s entirely alien to Sheldon.

In a situation like this, when nothing can be taken for granted, that’s an absolutely crucial trait. With his level-headed nature (well, more so than Sheldon, at any rate), it seems he’d have more to offer a group of survivors than Sheldon. In the ways of companionship, too, as it isn’t all about brainpower alone.

3 We Wouldn’t Want: Rajesh Koothrappali

In Season Eight’s “The Intimacy Acceleration,” Leonard and Raj try out an escape room with Amy and Emily. With their advanced degrees, they solve each of the elaborate puzzles and escape the room in record time, surprising nobody. What’s interesting is that there’s a zombie in the room (the story is that it’s the lab of a famous scientist whose latest experiment went horribly wrong), and Raj’s reaction to the actor in costume does not bode well.

When the zombie leaps out, Raj shrieks and states that he hopes one of the clues is written on a clean pair of underwear. As such, we don’t really have high hopes for him as a zombie apocalypse survivor. Aside from that, this mild-mannered and deeply anxious man shares a lot in common with Stuart, and would fare badly for all the same reasons.

2 We’d Want: Howard Wolowitz

More good news for the Wolowitz family: it looks as though Howard would also make it out of a zombie apocalypse. What does he have that of the other members of the gang don’t? That’s a good question.

While Sheldon often snarkily jokes that they all have doctorates while Howard is ‘just an engineer,’ the important thing here is that Howard has more than just theoretical knowledge: he has a practical talent that may prove crucial in this scenario.

From defense systems to space toilets, he’s built all kinds of devices and could be a huge help in keeping his fellow survivors alive (given access to certain supplies). Whether he could keep his head in a crisis would be another matter, but we think he’s worth a shot at least.

1 We Wouldn’t Want: Bertram “Bert” Kibbler

Poor, lovable, harmless Bert. While he isn’t a major player in the series, we see enough of this gentle giant geologist to know that he really wouldn’t be equipped to survive a zombie apocalypse.

Like most of the Caltech crew, he’s a timid man who keeps to himself and struggles in social situations. With his meek and agreeable nature, you just know he’d be somebody who just accepts the most dangerous supply-gathering job and gets himself bitten in the process. The sweeter they are, the more heart-wrenching their deaths, and we don’t want that on our conscience.
