Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz started out as a peripheral character in the hit comedy-drama The Big Bang Theory and then went on to become a permanent cast member adding to the mad caper of the series.

Bernadette is one of the strongest female characters on the show, an accomplished woman who loves to control her own life as well as that of others. Actress Melissa Rauch did a commendable job portraying this intimidating but ultimately beloved little woman who had some very empowering as well as rather weak story arcs during the series.

10 Best: Getting Her Phd & A High Profile Job

In season 4, Bernadette was shown to have received her doctorate in microbiology and been recruited by a major pharmaceutical firm. She even presented Howard with a Rolex watch to celebrate her achievements.

Although this became a running gag for Howard and Bernie since the latter earned significantly more than the former, the arc itself was both empowering and encouraging for women on popular television. Bernie was for all intents and purposes the man of the house after the two got married.

9 Worst: The Parallels With Mrs. Wolowitz

One of the story arcs involving Bernadette was her uncanny parallels with Howard’s mother, Mrs. Wolowitz. The two had similarly high-pitched voices and could scream their heads off at anyone and everyone. The comic element was supposed to lie in the fact that Howard was drawn to someone who so closely reminded one of his mothers, at least in the way she spoke or yelled.

However, this parallel between the two characters only reinforced the stereotype that men suffer some sort of Oedipal Complex, i.e. they are drawn to their mothers at some subconscious level, and wasn’t always in good taste.

8 Best: Helping Penny Get A Well-Paid Job

In season 8, one of Bernadette’s arcs is how she helps Penny get a job as a sales rep at her own pharmaceutical company. Although there is some comedy surrounding how terrified Penny is of Bernie, she does finally get the job and in fact, it changes her life.

Penny goes from moping around about her failed acting career to becoming a highly paid medical sales rep and this gives her confidence and makes her more secure in her relationship with Leonard. And it was all because of Bernadette.

7 Worst: Falling Prey To Emotional Blackmail About Being A Mom

Another storyline following Bernadette in season 5 was when she revealed to Howard that she didn’t want to have kids. This was something she felt strongly about and her feelings should have been respected.

However, Howard started pushing her and trying to convince her to change her mind. He even complained to Bernie’s dad about his daughter’s decision, And Bernadette finally gave in to all the pressure and the emotional blackmail from her husband and father.

6 Best: Supporting Howard During His Journey Through Space

Bernadette didn’t immediately jump on board with Howard going to the International Space Station and even complained to his mother about it. But she did it out of love and anxiety for the man she loved.

When she realized how much the space project mattered to Howard, she finally came around. She acted as his support system throughout the time he was rehearsing to go up and then when he eventually did, encouraging him and reminding him how much he wanted to go to outer space, even though she stayed worried all the time. She even took charge and got married to him before he left for space. The whole season 5 arc showed her to be someone who genuinely cared.

5 Worst: Blackmailing Amy To Become Her Maid Of Honor

Since Amy all but blackmailed Bernie into making her maid of honor at her wedding, it probably made sense that Bernie expected the gesture to be returned at Amy’s wedding.

But in her inimitable manner, Bernie made all efforts to put pressure on Amy who really wanted Penny, whom she considered her best friend, as her maid of honor. Snarky and feisty as Bernadette was, her insensitivity to other people’s feelings sometimes took away from her otherwise strong character arc.

4 Best: Pushing Howard To Stand On His Own Feet

The same personality trait that appeared excessive at times also had its benefits. It was Bernadette’s presence that turned around Howard’s life.

Fans know that a lot of hysterical moments surrounding Howard featured how he continued to live with his mom even as a grown man. Bernadette pushed him to finally leave his mom’s shelter and fend for himself. It was she who took the initiative, became a pillar of strength, and set up a home with him, away from his mom’s constant, although ultimately beloved, presence.

3 Worst: Nagging Penny To Be Her Team Lead

As noted earlier, one of the most distinctive characteristics defining Bernie was her rather domineering, selfish nature, often bordering on the insensitive.

In season 12, Bernie offers Penny the team lead’s position to set up the sales campaign for her new FDA approved drug. While this was nice of her in the first place, she did become overbearing in her approach, nagging and pressurizing Penny for something she clearly wasn’t comfortable doing.

2 Best: Ensuring That Howard Shared The Workload

After Bernie and her Howie got married and settled down with two kids, it was Bernadette who took on most of the pressure of performing chores on top of having a high-powered job and looking after two kids.

Howard, although more mature than before, would simply laze around all day playing video games or lounging with his friends. At times, he would even delegate work to Raj and Stuart, exploiting their guilt at practically living off the Wolowitzes. However, Bernadette put her foot down and made sure her husband shared the workload at home.

1 Worst: Mocking Sheldon On Halloween

True to her at times hurtful behavior, Bernie helps Howard tease Sheldon during Halloween in the final season. Yes, she is being supportive of her husband by getting back at Sheldon for the years of humiliation he had subjected Howard to, but her twisted approach ends up hurting Sheldon.

She also refuses to ask Howard to apologize to Sheldon, culminating in Amy avenging her husband by hurting Bernadette and Howard in return. The whole arc appeared immature and can even be considered offensive in a general sense, as Howard makes fun of Sheldon who is clearly socially awkward, and Amy ends up mocking Bernie herself for her height and voice.
