The BIGGER Knightmare In Justice Leagues Snyder Cut Explained

The trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League has finally arrived and it contains a glimpse at an even bigger ‘Knightmare’ future scenario than the one featured in Batman V Superman. Back when the DCEU was still establishing itself, Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman set the stage for big things to come. Aside from the historic battle between Batman and ‘Supes’, the film set numerous storylines in motion that were designed to be developed in Snyder’s then-forthcoming Justice League two-parter. One of the biggest and most intriguing story elements was Bruce Wayne’s ‘Knightmare’ vision, in which he seemingly dreams of a dystopian future in which Darkseid and the forces of Apokolips had conquered Earth and Superman had morphed into an evil version of his former self.

At the time, the sequence raised more questions than it answered, and due to Warner meddling with Snyder’s Justice League, things stayed that way. The movie was infamously altered by the studio after Snyder left the project, removing the Darkseid character completely, along with much of what the ‘Knightmare’ sequence had teased in BVS. Luckily, Snyder has confirmed the Knightmare vision will make a lot more sense after his version of Justice League hits HBO Max next year.

Now, the trailer for the highly-anticipated ‘Snyder Cut’ of Justice League has finally been released, via the movie’s panel at DC FanDome. Along with a tantalizing array of new footage, the trailer gives audiences their first official close-up look at Darkseid, along with a quick glimpse at an even more hellish ‘Knightmare’ scene than the one from BVS. In fact, the Justice League trailer opens with a disturbing vignette showing a crumbled Hall of Justice and numerous hidden details that hint at a truly monumental battle ahead for the Justice League. Here’s everything the new ‘Knightmare’ scene from the trailer reveals.

The Hall Of Justice Is Destroyed

After introducing Darkseid, the trailer quickly reveals a tracking shot that appears to be from the vantage point of Wayne Manor overlooking the same chaotic scene Affleck’s ‘Knightmare Batman’ beheld in BVS – a scene that was originally not supposed to be in the movie. The view looks slightly different from the one seen in the original Knightmare sequence, with the oppressive red hue toned way down. But what’s most jarring about this scene is that Wayne Manor has clearly been leveled. The camera moves through the rubble, revealing part of a fallen “Justice League” sign that was presumably erected once Wayne had succeeded in transforming his home into the Hall of Justice. Though seen for the first time in the new trailer, this very shot was actually revealed when Snyder shared one of his storyboards for Justice League back in 2018. This was the first time it was revealed Darkseid was intended to be in the final cut and shows the same view from a crumbled Hall of Justice as can be seen in the new trailer.

Aquaman’s Trident and Wonder Woman’s Shield

Neither of these heroes appeared in the original Knightmare sequence, which depicted Batman attempting to acquire some Kryptonite before being captured by Darkseid’s forces and confronted with a Superman seemingly turned evil after the death of Lois Lane. In that original vision, evil ‘Supes’ kills Wayne in gruesome fashion before the present-day Wayne wakes up to find Ezra Miller’s Flash speaking to him through a portal in time – seeming to warn Wayne that Lois is “the key”. At no point in the sequence are any of the other heroes alluded to. In the new trailer, however, it seems events have moved on slightly from the original ‘Knightmare’ and things haven’t gone well for Aquaman and Wonder Woman. Whether they perished or not isn’t clear, but it certainly seems likely given the symbology.

The Joker Card

At the end of the quick scene shown in the new trailer, a piece of paper flies past the camera, which actually turns out to be yet another hidden detail. This one in particular points to the potential fate of the Dark Knight himself in this dystopian future. Back in 2016, Snyder shared an image of the ‘Knightmare Batman’ on Vero which revealed the rifle this future version of the hero carries also sports a nod to his greatest foe. Taped to the butt of the rifle is a Joker card. The director didn’t elaborate too much on it, but Snyder is known for his attention to detail and likely knew exactly what that card represented and the story behind ‘Batfleck’ taping it to his gun.

Whatever the thinking behind the Joker card’s appearance in the BVS Knightmare scene, it seems the new Snyder Cut trailer contains a similar easter egg. As the camera moves beyond the fallen Justice League sign, a bedraggled version of what is presumably the same Joker card can be seen flying quickly into frame as the camera tracks towards the ruins of Gotham City in the background. It’s quick, but the design looks identical to the card taped to Batman’s gun in the – admittedly confusing – BVS Knightmare sequence. Clearly no longer taped to the gun (if it is indeed the same card), the card has clearly been heavily damaged in whatever climactic event caused the Hall of Justice to crumble.

In Snyder’s plan for this vision of the Justice League’s future, does the gun-toting Batman of the original sequence suffer a different fate to the one meted out by evil Superman in the original ‘Knightmare’? Or is this simply a reminder that Batman is most certainly dead in this vision. Or does this easter egg actually hint at a possible Joker cameo in the ‘Knightmare’ of the Snyder Cut of Justice League? It’s all unclear at this time, but the card seems to make clear Batman has certainly been defeated in much the same way the trident and shield suggest his Justice League comrades have. Either way, the ‘Knightmare’ of the Snyder Cut certainly looks to be an altogether more depressing scenario than the Batman V Superman version.
