The Biggest Artists Songs & Trends On KPop Twitter

In 2020, K-pop fans around the world took to Twitter to express love and admiration for various K-pop artists and bands. Both fans and musicians are active on Twitter, allowing the community to come together in record-breaking ways. The music genre has proven to be a significant part of pop culture in general, from a Netflix documentary centering on the group Blackpink, to a video by BTS premiering on Fortnite, as well as a part-time K-pop star named Seraphine appearing in League of Legends.

K-pop features musical talent from all over South Korea and many are very passionate about their favorite artists. Fans of BTS — the “ARMY” — effectively broke TikTok after a clip of a new song premiered on the app. Fans also often use Twitter to combine a love for music with a passion for important social issues. When the hashtag #WhiteLivesMatter surfaced on the site, K-pop fans flooded it with videos of songs and artists. Twitter is also a popular place for subcultures to thrive in general. In addition to K-pop, the social media service plays host to subcultures like cottagecore, a popular fashion aesthetic that romanticizes a rural, picturesque lifestyle.

Twitter recently released an Insights report detailing just how significant K-pop was on the platform during last year. Overall, 2020 saw 6.7 billion Tweets related to K-pop, in addition to over 300 K-pop Topics available to follow. Those 6.7 billion Tweets were spread across markets worldwide — including Spain, which broke into the top 20 for the first time. BTS took the number one spot for most-mentioned K-pop artist, followed by NCT and then EXO. New artists also got a boost on the platform, with Treasure, TXT and Stray Kids all among the Top 5 fastest-rising K-pop artists on Twitter. Fans also used the platform to talk about their favorite songs with Breath (a new release from group GOT7) placing fifth in the Top 10 most-mentioned K-pop songs in 2020. BTS took all of the four top spots, with Dynamite, On, Black Swan and Life Goes On.

How K-Pop Impacted Twitter Trends

Like everyone else, K-pop artists had to adjust to the new normal of the coronavirus pandemic, which meant using Twitter as a replacement for attending concerts and other typical events. #TwitterBlueroom hosted several livestream events that allowed groups like Blackpink, SuperM and Seventeen to interact with fans. For example, Blackpink took part in a question and answer session in June to answer a variety of fan questions.

The presence of K-pop groups went far beyond just keeping up with fans, though. Many also took part in important social justice movements, including the #MatchAMillion initiative. This encouraged fans of BTS to raise enough money to match a $1 million donation the group made to the Black Lives Matter movement. Overall, the latest Insights report from Twitter makes it clear that K-pop had a big impact on the micro-blogging platform in 2020, and that the impact is expected to be “bigger than ever” in 2021.
