Hughie is, in many ways, the main character of The Boys, but not everything about him makes total sense.

The Boys 10 Things That Make No Sense About Hughie

Now in its second season on Amazon Prime Video, The Boys continues the adventures of Hughie Campbell and the group of mercenaries who transformed him from a simple stereo store clerk into a hardened criminal. Their mission is still to bring Vought down and dethrone superheroes everywhere who think they’re the superior mashup of celebrities and gods.

Based on the edgy comic book series by Garth Ennis, the hit series has already shown some discrepancies between itself and its source material. Hughie has undergone quite a transformation, both from his comic counterpart and over the course of the show’s incredibly graphic events. As one of the main protagonists, Hughie has a lot of screen time and a lot of influence, but sometimes his decision-making skills -and the way his character is written- have left fans wondering about his dependability.

10 Not giving him depth like in his comic counterpart

The Boys 10 Things That Make No Sense About Hughie

The version of Hughie from the comic series was based on Simon Pegg, who played his father in Season 1 as a fun nod to the source material, but that’s where the similarities end. Hughie from the comics was homophobic, hated his parents, had sexual frustrations, and wanted respect given to him at every opportunity.

By being so unlikable himself, he was easy to manipulate by Butcher, who gave him an opportunity to sort out his problems through violence. Hughie went through character development through the comic series that isn’t possible in the television show simply because Hughie is already the most well-adjusted member of The Boys.

9 His lack of character-defining traits

The Boys 10 Things That Make No Sense About Hughie

In an incredible ensemble cast like The Boys, with characters that are all well-defined, Hughie is given only a few defining traits that once gone, don’t fuel the momentum of his narrative arc any longer. In Season 1 it was the death of his girlfriend Robin, but that rage having subsided, he seems usurped by more interesting characters in Season 2.

Hughie is mostly defined as a slightly nerdy, milquetoast tech whiz who is dragged through the heroic trials and tribulations of much more competent teammates. He then inexplicably becomes attached to one of the most celebrated superheroes in the world, despite being a stereo shop clerk, supposedly because he’s “genuine”, but in actuality is fine with lying when it suits him.

8 His reason for taking down Vought

The Boys 10 Things That Make No Sense About Hughie

In Season 1, Hughie’s main reason for taking down Vought was because A-Train killed his girlfriend Robin. He immediately wanted to stop helping when he found out that Billy didn’t really care about Robin. Billy later sabotaged the operation himself when he found out he couldn’t defeat Homelander.

Given Hughie’s morality and tether to humanity, it seemed that he of all people would first and foremost have wanted to take down an organization like Vought because it would help thousands of people who have also lost loved ones to supers.

7 Putting up with Billy the Butcher

The Boys 10 Things That Make No Sense About Hughie

Hughie represents both the audience and the primary protagonist in The Boys, whose reactions to the incredible circumstances he’s apart of shape the narrative of the series. He does his level best to represent morality and decency surrounded by people like Billy Butcher who are single-minded in their psychopathy.

For the sheer amount of misery that Hughie has put up with being apart of The Boys, it’s surprising that he’s lasted as long as he has. Billy puts him through nothing but pain and misery, and can’t even congratulate him when he does what Billy couldn’t; take down Vought.

6 His relationship with Starlight

The Boys 10 Things That Make No Sense About Hughie

When Hughie first got close to Starlight his intentions were twofold; to talk to a pretty woman, and get information about Vought from the newest member of The Seven. He didn’t trust her enough to let her in on his secret about working with The Boys, which led to him having to lie to her the entirety of their relationship.

It’s highly unlikely that Starlight would ever be romantically involved with someone like Hughie even if he is a “nice guy” and seemingly “normal” because she needed to be with someone who understood her obstacles. Hughie proved he didn’t value their connection when he acted dejected and depressed in Season 2, as though Starlight getting mad at him for lying to her was somehow worse than his initial deceit.

5 Not working harder to make amends with Annie

The Boys 10 Things That Make No Sense About Hughie

Starlight was already disillusioned with Vought and The Seven by the time she got close to Hughie in Season 1, especially after the actions of The Deep and Homelander, yet Hughie managed to hurt her more than either of them because she placed her trust in him.

When she confronted him, he made her pain about himself, and tried to coerce her understanding by explaining how she had “saved him” at the bowling alley. At a time when he should have worked harder to explain to her about how despite his mission for The Boys his feelings for her were real, he doubled down on being obtuse and abstract.

4 Setting Starlight up with a burner phone

The Boys 10 Things That Make No Sense About Hughie

In the finale of Season 1, Starlight and Hughie parted ways on a rocky foundation. He had betrayed her trust, and despite the fact that she saved his life, it didn’t seem like she was ready to be transparent with him in the same way again.

Somehow from that time to the events of Season 2, Hughie has gotten her a burner phone to use so that they can communicate clandestinely. Without any explanation, it seemed unlikely and forced.

3 Putting Starlight in harm’s way

The Boys 10 Things That Make No Sense About Hughie

While it’s apparent that Hughie and Starlight make more of an effective “team” than they do a couple, Hughie puts an inordinate amount of the risk on Starlight because she’s in a much more high profile position and in much closer proximity to Homelander, who’s proven himself to be an incredibly dangerous threat to her personal safety.

While it was Hughie who found Gecko, it was Starlight’s personal connection to him that gave her the leverage to blackmail him into obtaining her a sample of Compound V. Hughie’s insistence to continue to be close to Starlight and keep in touch with her with very traceable voicemails puts their lives in unnecessary danger.

2 Finding Starlight in the tunnel

The Boys 10 Things That Make No Sense About Hughie

When Hughie and the rest of The Boys try to outrun The Seven in Season 2, they end up in a tunnel that causes them all to split up, but Hughie decides to find Starlight despite the fact that the most powerful superhumans in the world are trying to find him and kill him (Homelander even has super hearing).

Hughie creates a horrible scenario for Starlight where she’s forced to kill him on Homelander’s authority. Eventually he’s saved by Billy and The Boys, but not before showcasing his plummeting observational awareness.

1 Not killing A-Train when he had the chance

In Season 1, Hughie has A-Train right where he wants him, and knows he’s vulnerable (A-Train’s leg is able to be broken). Yet for some reason he doesn’t kill the one person responsible for Robin’s death and the sole reason he joined The Boys when he has the perfect opportunity.

It would be one thing if Hughie made his morality more salient in the scene, but he was able to kill Translucent, who hadn’t done anything to him personally. And if he had any qualms about doing it himself, he could certainly have ordered Kimiko to do it.
