Amazon’s very own streaming service Amazon Prime is certainly not as much of a mammoth in the streaming industry as its parent company is in e-commerce, but it’s getting there. Surely the biggest thing that drives people to a specific streaming service is the content, and Amazon has every other company beat in the quantity department as it has the biggest library of them all. But just having a bunch of old movies and shows isn’t good enough in this day and age.
What people demand is newer and original content, something Amazon has been investing in for quite some time now. Many of Amazon’s highly-acclaimed originals fly under the popularity radar, such as Upload, while others like The Boys have turned into their flagship product. The following list takes a look at some Prime original shows which will be making a return soon.
10 Carnival Row (Season 2)
One of Amazon’s most underrated originals in recent years, Carnival Row failed to create the kind of buzz that would be expected from a high-budget show like it. Even having popular actors such as The Lord of the Rings star Orlando Bloom and Suicide Squad actress Cara Delevingne in the cast wasn’t enough to draw in an audience. A fantasy drama, the series revolves around various characters in a society where humans and mythical non-human creatures like fairies co-exist.
9 Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (Season 3)
From James Bond to Ethan Hunt, there is simply no end to the number of action heroes that populate the screens of Hollywood films, and Jack Ryan is one of many. A creation of military-action writer Tom Clancy, the character has been played by several actors across his various screen adaptations, such as Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. Right now, The Office star John Krasinski holds the title in Amazon’s web-series that was renewed for a third season in 2019, so a premiere can be expected in 2021.
8 The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Season 4)
From the creator of Gilmore Girls, Amy Sherman-Palladino, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a period drama taking place in the mid-1900s about a housewife who takes up stand-up comedy. Frequently celebrated as one of the best the platform has to offer, the pilot episode of the show was such a big hit that Amazon instantly ordered 2 seasons of it. Having won multiple Emmys and Golden Globes, the show made its creator the first woman to win an Emmy for comedy writing and directing.
7 Upload (Season 2)
In the futuristic world of Upload, created by the man behind many popular TV shows such as The Office and Parks and Recreation Greg Daniels, technology has allowed people to digitize the after-life. Equal parts sci-fi and romantic-comedy, the plot centers around a man Nathan Brown, who is “uploaded” into a form of digital heaven after being murdered where he grows closer with his human handler.
With witty writing and excellent performances from its leading cast, the show plays with serious questions about life and death in a humorous manner.
6 Bosch (Season 7)
With six whole seasons aired and a seventh and final one in development, Bosch is Amazon Prime’s longest-running original series. A police procedural like any other, it is based on the best-selling crime novel series from author Michael Connelly who has written a total of 21 books featuring the eponymous character. Lost and Deadwood star Titus Welliver appears in the lead as Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch, a role he will be taking up again for the spin-off that is being developed for IMDb TV.
5 Hanna (Season 3)
Amazon Prime’s Hanna is based on the 2011 film of the same name from director Joe Wright starring Lady Bird actress Saoirse Ronan, about a teenage girl raised by an ex-CIA agent to be an assassin. British actress Esme Creed-Miles can be found in the titular role as the protagonist, who has a Captain America-like history, having been involved with a government run program designed for creating super soldiers out of children.
The series was created by one of the screenwriters of the original film David Farr.
4 Undone (Season 2)
One of Amazon’s highest-rated original productions with an amazing Rotten Tomatoes rating of 98%, Undone was created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy, the developers behind yet another critically acclaimed animated series – Bojack Horseman. With its unique rotoscopic animation style, it tells the story of a woman who gains the power to manipulate time after surviving a life-threatening accident. A second season was confirmed in November of 2019, soon after the release of the first season.
3 Hunters (Season 2)
There used to be a time when movie stars and TV actors generally referred to two different classes of people, but those times are long gone now. Hunters features none other than one of cinema’s most iconic and revered actors Al Pacino alongside Percy Jackson’s Logan Lerman.
Although it isn’t Pacino’s first time acting in a TV role, it is still something of a surprise seeing him masquerade as the head of a group of Nazi hunters in 1977’s New York City.
2 Goliath (Season 4)
Fargo actor Billy Bob Thornton plays Billy McBride, a defamed lawyer looking for redemption in Amazon’s legal-drama Goliath. Despite being one of their most expensive original series. the show’s apparent popularity on the platform has managed to run it for three seasons, with a fourth and final season set to release soon. Spider-Man actor J K Simmons will be joining the cast as possibly one of the primary antagonists George Zax for its final season.
1 The Boys (Season 3)
Superhero media is more popular than ever before, and usually, when people hear that word either DC or Marvel comes to mind. They are the two biggest players in the field after all. But it’s good that even in a market mostly dominated by two companies. shows like The Boys provide something of a necessary breath of fresh air, even if it is not perfect. It is the polar opposite of what Marvel and DC movies represent, a world where superheroes are the most corrupt and evil of them all.
