The Boys Hints The Deep Takes Over The Church In Season 3

The Deep’s story is left firmly up in the air by the events of The Boys season 2 finale — but there is some indication that he could take over the Church of the Collective in season 3. Played by Chace Crawford, Deep debuted in the very first episode as a stalwart member of The Seven. A satirization of such heroes as Aquaman, he was quickly revealed to be just as morally bankrupt as most of Vought International’s trademarked superheroes. After his sexually abusive actions were exposed by Starlight (Erin Moriarty), however, he found himself on the outs with the corporation. Demoted from The Seven, he was reassigned to Sandusky, Ohio, and, later, ended up on the receiving end of similar abuse.

Having hit rock bottom by The Boys season 2, The Deep was recruited by Eagle the Archer (Langston Kerman) and spokeswoman Carol (Jessica Hecht). Joining the Church of the Collective, Deep was guided in successfully rehabilitating his image. Equally, he confronted the issues and self-loathing that fueled his problematic behavior. The ultimate aim of the quest was a return to The Seven. Unfortunately, despite reviving his popularity and aiding Maeve (Dominique McElligot) in getting leverage over Homelander (Antony Starr), Deep was passed over in favor of reinstating A-Train (Jessie Usher). In his frustration, Deep lashed out at chairman, Alistair Adana (Goran Visnjic). With a declaration of “F*ck Fresca”, he seemed to sever ties with the Church of the Collective. However, there are signs that he might stick around. Furthermore, certain developments could even see him thrust into more of a leadership position.

Following the explosive events of The Boys season 2 finale, a special PSA was released in which the various Vought superheroes offered reassurance and pledged stability. Midway through, The Deep made an appearance on behalf of both dolphins and the Church of the Collective. Seeming more comfortable and self-assured than ever, he espoused the benefits of the organization and encouraged people to sign up. Of course, it remains to be seen just how canonical the video actually is to The Boys season 3 — especially since Aya Cash’s Stormfront also appeared. However, showrunner Eric Kripke had a hand in the script, so it could be dropping hints of what’s to come as much as reflecting on the themes of what occurred in The Boys season 2. And The Deep taking over the Church would make some sense.

Shortly after his contentious encounter with The Deep, Adana was killed by Congresswoman Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit). As such, it’s left unclear whether his view that Deep had become “a toxic personality” to be outed like Eagle went beyond his office. Even if it did, however, the Church lost that particular figurehead when Adana lost his own. Therefore, his decisions don’t necessarily have to stick. After joining the Church, The Deep was put forward as their most prominent member. In the wake of Adana’s death, the organization would likely need that going forward — in order to evoke its own sense of stability. Though it was mentioned that the Church was established and maintained by the Adana family, there was no reference to him having children. Therefore, even if it’s merely as a hollow frontman, who better to put in charge than The Deep?

The move would open up several interesting avenues. For starters, it could be fun to see him push forward with his environmentalist aims on a wider scale — either to more success or further failure. Secondly, it would really test his redemption arc. Giving him a modicum more power would allow viewers to see if things really stick or if he would slip into old habits. It would also allow him more direct integration with the main threads of the show. Throughout The Boys season 2, Deep often felt disconnected. Being the head of the church would give him the opportunity to align or clash with the interests of Vought and/or Neuman in The Boys season 3. As such, the storyline could be made less throwaway. Equally, it would allow Deep to potentially form his own Seven-esque team and give the titular group a new pillar to deal with.
