The Celestials How Powerful Are The MCUs Space Gods

Exactly how powerful are the Celestials in Marvel’s upcoming Eternals movie, and is there anyone in the MCU that is actually capable of beating them? First briefly depicted in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the mysterious and ancient space gods have had a quiet and mysterious presence in the MCU thus far. That is set to change on November 5, 2021 with the release of Eternals, as multiple Celestials—including comic-accurate depictions of Arishem the Judge and Jemiah the Analyzer—have been teased in the film’s trailers.

Like their comic book counterparts, the Celestials are towering, cosmic beings that dwell deep in outer space. So far, the only direct interaction MCU characters have had with their kind came in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his band of misfits tangled with Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell). Aside from being Quill’s father, effectively making Star Lord a half-Celestial, the movie’s twist was the reveal that Ego was actually a Celestial in human/planet form.

In the MCU and in the comics, the Celestials are credited with creating the Eternals, as well as the Deviants, who appear to be the primary protagonists for Marvel’s upcoming film. This group of alien immortals being presented as the MCU’s strongest superhero team leaves a strong impression about the Celestials and what they may be capable of if unleashed on the rest of the multiverse. Here’s what the Celestials can do in Marvel comics, what’s known about their powers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and which characters might have a shot at overpowering them.

The Celestials Powers In Marvel Comics Explained

Introduced alongside Ikaris and all the others in Jack Kirby’s original Eternals comic book series, the Celestials have often been depicted as some of the most powerful characters in the entire Marvel Universe. In terms of where they fall on the power scale, Thanos himself has confirmed that the Celestials are close to the top. When the Mad Titan briefly possessed the Infinity Gauntlet in the 1990s, he took some time to evaluate the beings who might have what it takes to defeat him. With all the powers he had, he knew that only a cosmic entity would be capable of standing in his way. To Thanos, this category included beings such as the Celestials, the Stranger, Galactus, and very few others. It’s important to note that Marvel’s strongest superheroes, such as Thor and Silver Surfer, are far below this particular level of power.

Celestials being in the highest tier of Marvel characters is attributed largely to their massive supply of cosmic energy, which they can use to obliterate their enemies and even entire planets on a whim. Standing thousands of feet high, they’re also nearly invulnerable, as only a being near to their power level would have the means to hurt them. In one comic arc, Odin was equipped with deity-infused Destroyer armor, the Oversword, and had the life force of nearly every Asgardian powering him, and the All-Father still didn’t stand a chance against the Celestial Arishem, Killer of Planets. As for what they do, many of the Celestials all have their own individual skills, which they use to carry out their appointed tasks. Quite a few are scientists, while others are scouts that travel the universe.

How Powerful Are The Celestials In The MCU?

Based on what’s known about the MCU’s Celestials, all signs point to them being comparable to the comic versions in regards to their powers. Both are seen as god-like entities and are responsible for creating the Eternals, and in the comics are responsible for helping to bring about the multiverse itself. If they brought the Eternals into existence and have the authority to send them to and from places like Earth, then it stands to reason that the Celestials are vastly superior to anything seen in the MCU to this point.

On top of possessing tremendous strength and cosmic power, the MCU’s Eternals boast a number of abilities. In the final Eternals trailer, Jemiah the Analyzer can be seen teleporting and generating a collection of energy into his hands for an unknown purpose. And since they’re of the same race as Ego the Living Planet, it’s plausible that at least some of them share his skillset. Ego could control “light” energy and project it into devastating blasts against his enemies. In addition, he could manipulate matter, giving him the ability to mentally repair injuries to his body, and create a human form that he could assume at will. Unless Marvel reveals that Ego was somehow unique from the Celestials presented in Eternals, it’s plausible they too should be able to achieve these feats.

Who In The MCU Is More Powerful Than The Celestials

It’s worth wondering if there’s anyone above the Celestials in the MCU’s power structure. The existence of such a character is plausible, but it’s hard to imagine it being any of the core Avengers. Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel are both incredibly powerful, but neither are currently in the same league as most of the Celestials. While we haven’t yet seen them in action, presumably this should also apply to the entire crew of Eternals. Similar to the situation in the comics, it makes sense that only cosmic-tier characters can compare to the Celestials, but even Galactus himself—who is comparatively much more powerful than Thanos—still fears select Celestials.

Marvel’s What If…? proved that to be true by demonstrating that Uatu the Watcher was the only character in the show that could match blows with an Infinity Stone-powered Ultron Vision. He held his own against him, whereas Captain Marvel and several others failed. That’s because Uatu the Watcher is in a different class to all of them. If there’s any existing MCU character that might be able to stand a chance against the Celestials, it would be him. Previous conflicts between the Watchers and Celestials in Marvel Comics are indicative of there not being a significant divide between them.

Since being armed with the Infinity Gauntlet made Ultron a match for Uatu, it may be that a character who understands how to properly utilize the combined abilities of the Infinity Stones may also have the power necessary to take a stand against a Celestial. That may be the only a way character who’s not on the cosmic level could beat one. Anyone outside of that spectrum would fall short, and that even includes Odin, Dormammu, and the heavily-rumored Mephisto. Both are more powerful than the MCU’s heroes, but are still considerably weaker than the Celestials. So for now, Uatu the Watcher may stand on his own as the only known character in the MCU who could have the odds in his favor in a no-holds-barred fight with one of Eternals’ Celestials.
