The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Confirms Riverdale Shared Universe

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina confirms its connection to fellow Archie Comics show Riverdale, not only by giving Archie and Betty a cameo in its intro, but also by name-dropping Riverdale in Episode 2. Though Riverdale airs on The CW and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a Netflix exclusive, the shows are otherwise within the same family. Both were created by Archie Comics CCO and writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who has said that he would love to have the shows cross over in the future – and even has an idea of how it could be done.

While Aguirre-Sacasa has said that his main priority was “launching Sabrina as its own thing and making sure that Riverdale is as gonzo as it’s ever been,” but that a crossover could be done fairly easily. “I always say that the Riverdale kids on a dare could like break into the haunted house in Greendale and it’s, ya know, the Spellman house on Halloween,” the showrunner explained. Riverdale has already paid a few visits to Sabrina’s home town of Greendale, which is generally referred to as a spooky and dangerous place. Ms. Grundy was murdered by the Black Hood in Greendale, and Jughead was charged with delivering a mysterious crate to Greendale by the Southside Serpents in the season 2 episode, “Tales From the Darkside.”

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Episode 2, “The Dark Baptism,” returns the favor when Sabrina and the Weird Sisters lure a group of bullies out to the mines. One of the bullies comments that he hasn’t seen the Weird Sisters around before, and asks if they go to Riverdale High. You can also spot Archie and Betty in Sabrina’s lengthy opening credits sequence, in a scene where the classic comic book version of Sabrina is watching them on her TV.

Strangely, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina does feature several actors from Riverdale – but only one appears to be playing the same character. In Episode 7, “Feast of Feasts,” a peckish Madam Satan orders a pizza and invites the pizza guy in – the implication being that she kills and eats him. However, “Ben the Pizza Guy” is played by Moses Thiessen, who also plays Ben Button in Riverdale. Why is this a problem? Well, because Ben also died in Riverdale – throwing himself out of a window as a result of madness induced by the role-playing game Griffins and Gargoyles.

Thiessen isn’t the only actor who appears in both shows. Chris Rosamond, who plays Harvey Kinkle’s curmudgeonly father, also played a member of the Southside Serpents called Mustang in Riverdale (presumably different characters, unless Mr. Kinkle is leading a very odd double life). Reese Alexander, who plays Josie’s father in Riverdale, appears in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as Roz’s father. Of course, these peculiarities are probably just the result of the producers double-dipping into the pool of Vancouver-based actors. Even the Marvel Cinematic Universe has featured the same actors in different roles across the universe (like Alfre Woodard’s roles in Captain America: Civil War and Luke Cage).

Unfortunately, besides name-dropping there are no crossovers between Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Riverdale in season 1 – but there could well be some in season 2, which is currently filming. It would be a lot of fun to see the Riverdale crew encountering Sabrina’s world of witchcraft, so let’s hope that Aguirre-Sacasa decides to make it happen.
