Daniel Day-Lewis stars as a rich lawyer getting ready to wed his young bride but finds himself entranced by his bride’s divorced cousin, played by Michelle Pfeiffer. It is a lovely period drama which gives Scorsese a new way to capture the city he loves.

New York is filled with so many people who come to the city to attempt their dreams only to find they are competing with everyone else who had the same idea. Frances is a funny yet scattered example of the people who refuse to let New York City push them out.

7 Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) – 7.5

The Coen Brothers have always done a great job of telling stories of small-town America. However, in Inside Llewyn Davis, they tell a New York City story but focus on someone living in its shadows.

Oscar Isaac plays the titular character, a miserable and rude folk singer attempting to make it big in the 1960s folk music scene. Isaac is wonderful as the mostly unlikable Davis, who seems to take one step forward and two steps back on his road to stardom.

6 The Fisher King (1991) – 7.5

In The Fisher King, Jeff Bridges stars as a New York City radio DJ whose controversial personality inspires a horrible crime. Filled with guilt, he attempts to find redemption by befriending a homeless man (Robin Williams) who is searching for the Holy Grail.

Both Bridges and Williams are outstanding in the film, which mixes humor with genuine heart. The city is used in an fascinating way, with the movie using it as the setting for this medieval-inspired quest.

5 Midnight Cowboy (1969) – 7.8

Sweet Smell of Success is a thrilling story of the shady characters operating in the city who will do any dirty deal to reach that next level. Tony Curtis plays a sleazy press agent who is hired by a powerful columnist (Burt Lancaster) to break up his sister’s relationship with a jazz singer.

1 On The Waterfront (1954) – 8.1

One of the most acclaimed films of all time is also the film that helped make Marlon Brando one of the biggest film icons of all time. On the Waterfront stars Brando as a former boxer who now works as a dock worker on the city’s waterfront. His principles are put to the test as organized crime moves into the territory.

Brando is electric in the lead role and the film itself is the ultimate blue-collar hero story. While New York stories can sometimes focus on the wealthy and powerful, it’s just as exciting to see a story of the city’s overlooked citizens.
