The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes, the third installment of Supermassive’s multi-part horror project, has a frightful new trailer which, alongside a creepy tour of ancient Sumerian ruins, reveals that the first look at the title’s gameplay is coming later this month. Following its success with the landmark horror adventure Until Dawn, developer Supermassive announced The Dark Pictures as an anthology series of horror games.

The first of these, Man of Medan, dropped nearly two years ago. The short experience is set on the high seas in the titular vessel and follows a group of friends that, through a series of alarming events, find themselves in a life-and-death struggle to get off the mysterious ship. The upcoming game, House of Ashes, was originally teased at the end of The Dark Pictures Anthology’s second installment, Little Hope, which came out last year. The witchcraft-inspired narrative, like Man of Medan before it, changes dramatically depending on the player’s choice, but every player that fought through to the end was greeted with a look at the next title’s creepy tomb-like setting.

Today’s trailer, from publisher Bandai Namco, shows off a little more of House of Ashes’ sinister archaeological site and promises to reveal gameplay on May 27. For this game, Supermassive is turning to Iraq, were the trailer reveals a band of soldiers who have found their way into a seemingly long-buried structure. The audience seems to watch the protagonists from the first person view of a creature stalking an unsuspecting pair. Its vision recals a kind of echolocation, like a bat seeing in the dark. The trailers’ last shot supports this idea, displaying a clawed, elongated set of fingers ominously curling around a pillar. The trailer does not reveal much more about what is going on in House of Ashes, but next week’s gameplay reveal, which starts at 9 AM PT, is likely to detail the game a bit further.

While Supermassive is still in the early stages of its The Dark Pictures Anthology project – the original vision for the series was to release a total of eight titles and House of Ashes is only the third – there are certainly fans that hope the developer will look into making a true Until Dawn sequel. The 2015 hit, however, may never get a follow-up, according to Supermassive. The developer explains that the challenges in creating a direct sequel would be almost insurmountable owing to the game’s overwhelming amount of player choice. Until Dawn’s web of decisions ultimately means players could have ended the game in completely different places with different characters surviving to the end. This prompted the creators to move on to The Dark Pictures Anthology.

The gameplay reveal for The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is coming up soon, so be sure to watch out for it next week. As June, which will see E3, Summer Game Fest, and more, comes rapidly closer, fans can be sure that there will be no lack of announcements in the near future.
