Supermassive Games’ newest horror title The Dark Pictures: Little Hope received its first trailer today on Twitter. The Dark Pictures is an anthology series of horror games that began with Man of Medan, which released in August last year. Little Hope is set to be the second game in the series.

Supermassive Games proved their skill at making horror games in 2015. Their flagship game Until Dawn was an interactive cinematic adventure that combined high-stakes decision making with slasher movie tropes and a strong cast of well-written and well-acted characters who could all die permanently if the player didn’t make the right decisions. The game was met with exceptional reviews upon launch and is widely regarded as one of the best games of 2015; no small feat, as 2015 saw a number of exceptional titles like Super Mario Maker and Bloodborne. Subsequent years saw Supermassive try to reclaim the magic with titles like The Inpatient, a prequel to Until Dawn that, while not panned outright, received a much less enthusiastic reception.

The Dark Pictures series is Supermassive’s newest attempt to reignite enthusiasm in their narrative horror. Man Of Medan received decent reviews, and while few, if any, would call it a better game than Until Dawn, it had its moments, and the inclusion of multiplayer, a rarity in the horror genre, did turn a few heads. This summer Supermassive is ready to continue the tale with Little Hope. A trailer was released on the series’ Twitter page today to give fans an idea of what to expect. Little Hope is set in the fictitious town of Little Hope, which has clearly been modeled after Salem, Massachusetts, both in terms of appearance and in terms of history. The mysterious Curator, who serves as the series’ recurring narrator, discusses the city’s dark past of witch hunts and persecution, and the sinister aftereffects these grim events have left on the town. The game seems to take place across two time periods; the trailer shows a standard, modern-looking cast of easily frightened characters ready to be terrorized and menaced by the supernatural, but the footage also cuts to the adventures of a witch-finder in period dress and his interactions with an eerie-looking child. It remains to be seen if this witch-finder has his own gameplay segments or if these are just flashback cutscenes to elaborate on the story of the game. Whatever the case may be, spooks are in ready supply throughout the trailer, which promises players ample opportunity to confront and likely be killed by dark magical forces.

The success of Until Dawn was a lightning strike that may never hit the same place a second time, but it set a precedent for Supermassive being able to deliver a powerfully good narrative horror experience, one which was unlike just about anything on the market at the time. While subsequent projects have fallen a bit short of its legacy, The Dark Pictures gives this team of clearly skilled developers an excellent chance to show their creative chops and deliver smaller, more focused, and more easily replayable horror experiences. Man of Medan wasn’t perfect but it did a lot of things right, and from the looks of this trailer, horror fans would be well within their rights to have high hopes for Little Hope.
