There have been some massive battles throughout the history of HBO’s hit fantasy series Game of Thrones, and here are the biggest and most deadly of them all. While the series is known for its rich world and great characters, the action is an element that has become more prominent as Game of Thrones continued. The limitations on the fights may have been initially the result of budget, but the budget increased as the popularity of the show grew, and ultimately gave the series many famous battles.
The increase in spectacle was especially apparent in the shortened final season, as they dedicated two different episodes to significant battles. By the time Game of Thrones wrapped up with its eighth season, there had been a lot of death to see who would sit on the iron throne. That was expected, as creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss tried to wrap up the sprawling story in a meaningful way for the characters, and also an entertaining and surprising one for audiences.
With the major fights featured in the final season, it’s time to look back on Game of Thrones as a whole to remember all the critical battles that it contained. This is the subject of Screen Rant’s latest video after the final season of the series was the deadliest of them all. So, check out the video at the top of this post to relive all of Game of Thrones’s biggest wars and deaths.
Before season 8, one of the premier battles that Game of Thrones produced was the Battle of the Basterds. The epic fight brought Jon Snow and Ramsey Bolton to the same battlefield as Jon attempted to take back Winterfell from the despicable leader. It featured some of the more now iconic moments in the history of Game of Thrones, but also proved to be a deadly one with the number of corpses piled up outside of the city walls. Jon was also central to another major battle in season five when the Massacre at Hardhome showed the power of the Night King.
As big as these battles were, two of the deadliest conflicts in Game of Thrones’ entire run came during the final few episodes. The Battle of Winterfell in episode 3 saw some fan-favorite characters die, but also decimated entire armies. Half of the Dothraki, Unsullied, and Northern troops were lost in the battle, while all of the White Walkers died thanks to Arya. Then in the penultimate episode of the series, Daenerys used her last dragon to wipe out the Iron Fleet, the Golden Company army, and thousands of King’s Landing civilians. With each season being deadlier than the last, it isn’t surprising that Game of Thrones went out with so much of it.
