Rob Zombie’s hyper-violent road-thriller The Devil’s Rejects turned 15 years old this past July. In addition to becoming a box-office success at the time of its release, earning more than $20 million globally on a $7 million budget, Zombie’s sophomore feature is also one of his most well-received movies among critics. In 2006, Zombie won a Fangoria Chainsaw Award for most Killer Movie (Scariest Film) for the sequel.

As a loose sequel to Zombie’s feature debut House of 1,000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects follows the twistedly psychotic Firefly family as they hit the road and evade the law while terrorizing a slew of victims along the way.

10 Rob Zombie Was Inspired By 4 Specific Movies

Although the name of characters Firefly (Leslie Easterbrook), Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), and Otis B. Driftwood (Bill Moseley) are derived from characters from classic Groucho Marx movies, Zombie cited four specific movies for directly influencing the film.

Zombie cited the classic criminals on the run movie Bonnie and Clyde, the ultra-violent Sam Peckinpah western The Wild Bunch, and Terence Malick’s lovers-on-the-lam movie Badlands for inspiring the story of The Devil’s Rejects. Zombie also named Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre as a major influence, which arguably is the most obvious of his inspirations.

9 There Were A Lot Of Casting Changes

As violent and merciless as it is, The Devil’s Rejects has been praised for its sordid cast of characters. However, several different actors either auditioned and lost certain roles or they were replaced at the last minute.

For instance, pro-wrestling legend Chris Jericho auditioned for the bounty hunter Rondo but was beat out by Danny Trejo when told he was too good looking for the part. Natasha Lyonne of Russian Doll fame was originally cast as Candy (one of Charlie’s prostitutes) but was ultimately replaced by Elizabeth Daily. Additionally, David Hess from the original The Last House On The Left tried out for one of the bounty hunters, while Uncle Phil himself James Avery was considered for the role of Capt. Spaulding’s adoptive brother Charlie, though that role went to Ken Foree.

8 The Original Mother Firefly’s Salary Demands Were Too High

Speaking of casting, the late Karen Black originally planned to reprise her memorable role as Mother Firefly, who first showed up in Zombie’s prior film House of 1,000 Corpses.

However, Black wanted more money to reprise her role than offered in the first film. When Black’s salary demands were deemed too high, Zombie ended up replacing her with Leslie Easterbrook, who would also go on to star in Zombie’s Halloween remake in 2007.

7 Rosario Dawson Has A Cut Role

The initial cut of the film featured a subplot involving the monstrous Dr. Satan (Walter Phelan) from House of 1,000 Corpses. Zombie ultimately decided to nix the scenes as the character felt wildly out of place within the context of the comparatively more grounded sequel.

With Dr. Satan’s excision went Rosario Dawson’s extended cameo role as a nurse watching over the supposedly comatose doctor. Dawson was set to play a victim who is slaughtered in less than a minute of screen time. The scenes with Dr. Satan and Dawson as a nurse have been reinstated on the DVD release of the film.

6 It Was Matthew McGrory’s Final Film

One of the most memorable characters from both The Devil’s Rejects is Tiny Firefly (Matthew McGrory), the deformed giant who first appeared in House of 1000 Corpses. The 7’6” McGrory is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Tallest Actor.

Unfortunately, McGrory passed away from natural causes a little more than a month after the release of The Devil’s Rejects. Zombie dedicated the movie to McGrory’s memory. Prior to filming, McGrory suffered an ankle injury that required a 7’4” stunt-double for the opening scene of Tiny dragging a body through the woods.

5 Sheri Moon Zombie’s Brother Has A Cameo

Sheri Moon Zombie’s brother Jeffrey was awarded an impromptu walk-on role in the film’s opening shootout. He plays one of the police officers engaging in gunfire with Firefly outlaws.

Jeffrey was originally invited to the set of the film as a visitor. However, when Zombie realized how skilled Jeffrey was with a gun, he was added to the movie’s opening firefight. The scene is also a direct reference to Ned Kelly’s infamous last stand at Glenrowan, Australia in 1880. This was made apparent by Otis and Rufus wearing improvised armor reminiscent of Kelly’s in the opening gunfight.

4 The Firefly Ranch Burned Down In 2016

The Firefly farmhouse in the film was fabricated on Sable Ranch in Santa Clarita, California. The recreation was modeled on the real ranch situated in the heart of a California forest.

The same ranch was used in the pilot episode of TNT’s long-running sci-fi/horror series Supernatural. On July 24, 2016, the real Firefly Family ranch burned to the ground in a wildfire. The location was used in several other Hollywood productions, including Motel Hell, The Invisible Man, 24, Wipeout, The A-Team, and many more.

3 Sheri Moon Zombie Had An Emotional Breakdown After An Intense Scene

After filming an emotional scene opposite William Forsythe (Sheriff John Wydell in the film), Sheri Moon Zombie became so distraught that she needed to take a couple of days off to recuperate.

The scene in which Baby Firefly was at the receiving end of Wydell’s fury took roughly two to three hours to film, requiring Moon Zombie to cry on cue. The actress was so emotionally devastated by the depths she was challenged to reach that she did not return to work for the next two days.

2 Most Of The Blood & Violence Was CGI

While Rob Zombie initially planned to use practical effects all throughout the film to reinforce its ’70s tableau, time constraints forced him to use roughly 100 digital shots in the film.

All of the direct violence seen in the film (such as physical impalement throat gouging, etc.) was achieved through CGI. Meanwhile, all of the non-contact violence (such as long-range gunshots hitting clothing rather than skin) was achieved through practical means. Much of the blood and gore in the film were also rendered through computer-generation.

1 Rob Zombie Submitted The Film 8 Times To The MPAA

Rob Zombie submitted the film to the MPAA eight times before finally securing an official R-rating. To compromise with the MPAA while retaining his vision, Zombie edited the film for tonal issues rather than graphic violence or gratuitous nudity.

Specifically, the MPAA had a major problem with the tone of the scene between Otis (Bill Moseley) and Gloria (Priscilla Barnes) in the motel room where they mess with their hostages in some pretty vile ways. Zombie was forced to trim two minutes from the scene in order to get an R-rating. The original cut of the sequence is included on the DVD release.
