Best Animated Film – The Mitchells Vs. The Machines

The Mitchells vs. the Machines is a comedic family film centered on the titular Mitchell family as they embark on a road trip to bring their older child, Katie, to college. On their way, malicious artificially intelligent robots attempt to capture people and send them into space, leading the Mitchells to try to stop them and save humanity.

The excellent animation and story work together incredibly well, creating an outlandish scenario, but The Mitchells vs. the Machines still has some relatable moments for the audience to connect with. With vocal performances by talented actors, The Mitchells vs. the Machines is an exciting film that children and adults alike can enjoy.

Best Non-Fiction Film (Documentary) – Flee

Flee centers around Amin, who, as a minor, left Afghanistan for Denmark as a refugee. Now, as an adult, Amin tells the story he has never told anyone before, not even his longtime boyfriend, whom he is preparing to marry.

The film is unique in its presentation, being mostly animated, and it displays the harrowing account in a beautiful and thoughtful manner. Heartbreaking and genuine, Flee shows various times in Amin’s life as he recounts experiences that he must come to terms with to move forward, resulting in an incredible film.

Best Actress – Lady Gaga (House Of Gucci)

Playing the real-life figure of Patrizia Reggiani, whose ambition leads to dramatic and deadly consequences for the Gucci family, Lady Gaga gives a phenomenal performance. She excellently communicates the character’s intentions with grounded nuance, despite the terrifying elements surrounding the events.

Lady Gaga is a pop star who transitioned to Hollywood, but her performance in House of Gucci reaffirms that she is also an incredibly talented actor. Though the film itself has received a mixed response, Lady Gaga has gotten extensive praise for her portrayal of the infamous figure.

Best Foreign Language Film – The Worst Person In The World

The Worst Person in the World is a film about Julie, who is unsure of what path she wants to take in life. Through romantic entanglements, familial drama, etc., she discovers more about herself and addresses her fears.

The romantic comedy-drama film excels in all of its genres, providing genuine laughs through its humor, heartbreaking moments through the more serious aspects, and a compelling romantic plot. The phenomenal performances from the cast, especially Renate Reinsve in the lead role, propel this film to incredible heights.

Best First Film – Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Lost Daughter)

Releasing on December 31, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s feature film directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, has impressed early audiences. The story centers on a woman named Leda, whose relaxing vacation turns tense as the events around her cause her to confront her past.

The incredible talents of Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, and many others appear to lend themselves well to the drama, creating a film that fans of the actors will be engrossed by.

Best Actor – Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power Of The Dog)

Taking place in Montana in 1925, The Power of the Dog focuses on a ranch owner named Phil, who grows disdainful of his brother’s new wife, Rose, and her son, Peter.

Benedict Cumberbatch fantastically portrays Phil, showing the complexities and emotional turmoil the character faces, while convincingly displaying the character’s unpredictable and destructive. With his talents in the lead role, The Power of the Dog is a film that could be a major contender at the 2022 Oscars.

Best Supporting Actor – Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power Of The Dog)

In The Power of the Dog, Kodi Smit-McPhee portrays the character of Peter, Rose’s son. Peter witnesses the cruel behaviors Phil displays and receives ridicule himself, all while pursuing education in the medical field.

Smit-McPhee communicates the character’s feelings and ambition, playing excellently off of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Phil. Each action he witnesses or takes part in adds to the complexities of the character, and audiences can understand the resentment and care Peter feels, excellently displayed through Smit-McPhee’s performance.

Best Supporting Actress – Kathryn Hunter (The Tragedy Of Macbeth)

Releasing on December 25, The Tragedy of Macbeth has been lauded by many who have seen it early as one of the best films of 2021. This is partly due to Kathryn Hunter’s incredible performance.

In the film, adapted from the Shakespeare play, Hunter portrays the Witches, mysterious figures who give prophecies for the events to come. Through the stellar delivery of her lines, Hunter provides an eerie presence, creating a sense of foreboding that lives up to the tone of its source material.

Best Picture – Drive My Car

After the death of his beloved wife two years prior, Yûsuke is asked to direct a stage production for an esteemed theatre festival. There, he meets Misaki, who is hired to be his driver for the duration of his directing job and who has experienced terrible loss as well.

The film features grounded performances and a gripping story that allows the audience to heavily connect with the main characters. A beautiful and heartbreaking exploration of love, grief, and connection through pain, Drive My Car is worthy of its award of Best Picture from the New York Film Critics Circle.
