The Entire BatFamily Becomes Red Hood In Gothams Future

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Future State: Gotham #7

In DC Comics’ new issue of Future State: Gotham, the members of the Bat-Family all become the Red Hood in order to save the city. While Nightwing has been leading the Bat-Family and their allies in a resistance movement against the Magistrate, Jason Todd has long been estranged from his family members due to his work as Peacekeeper Red, an operative actually working for the Magistrate. However, what Todd’s allies don’t know is that he’s been working as a double agent. And in this issue, he tries to save his family by giving them his mask.

In previous editions of Future State: Gotham from Joshua Williamson, Dennis Culver, and Giannis Milonogiannis, Red Hood found himself working with the Next Batman to stop the new villain known as Warmonger. Having already caused an explosion that resulted in major devastation to the city, Warmonger has also obtained mind control tech from the Mad Hatter, making him exceptionally dangerous. He’s been using the tech to generate mass chaos, convincing Gotham’s citizens to tear each other apart, and the Bat-Family aren’t immune to his attacks.

Now, Future State Gotham #7 sees Red Hood and the Next Batman as the only two vigilantes free of Warmonger’s control thanks to Jason having a counter-frequency uploaded into his mask to block the mind-control signal. While Red Hood battles Warmonger, he gives his mask to the Next Batman who fights the mind-controlled Bat-Family until he can put Jason’s mask on each of them, freeing them from the signal by making each of the vigilantes the Red Hood (temporarily).

Despite Nightwing and the Bat-Family’s animosity towards Jason Todd, Red Hood and the Next Batman saved them all using Jason’s mask so they could then help them defeat Warmonger. After the day was saved, the Bat-Family has a better understanding of Red Hood’s work in Gotham’s future as an undercover agent, and Nightwing in particular regrets not trusting him from the beginning.

In any case, seeing Nightwing and Tim Drake’s Robin wearing Red Hood’s mask is a pretty exciting visual. Not only did donning the mask restore their free will, but it also revealed the truth about Jason and his real motivations as the members of the Bat-Family each became the Red Hood themselves, even if only for a few brief moments.
