The Expanse Marco Inaros Plan Wasnt Perfect He Got Lucky

The Expanse’s Marco Inaros is lucky his season 5 attack on Earth proved as successful as it did. At the end of The Expanse season 4, Marco Inaros put his master plan into motion, launching a volley of asteroids towards Earth. While the blue planet is protected by a defense system for this kind of situation, Marco conspired with Martian rebels to procure valuable stealth technology that he retrofitted for the rocks to catch Earth by surprise. In The Expanse season 5, the stony projectiles reach their target, announcing Marco’s Free Navy as a major threat to peace between Earth, Mars and The Belt.

Marco’s attack is an unmitigated success, at least from his twisted perspective. One rock burns up en route to Earth, several others miss, and three are taken out by Earth’s Sentinel detection after Avasarala suggests rerouting the Watchtower system designed for war against Mars. But even so, rocks strike Dakar, Pennsylvania, and somewhere near South Asia. The death toll is in the millions, and the planet’s infrastructure is crippled, with flooding in areas close to landing zones. The final rock to hit Earth proves the most effective, however, taking out the personal plane of UN Secretary General Nancy Gao, in addition to half of her cabinet who were also on board. So devastating is the damage to Earth’s government, a no-name minister with zero political ambition is eventually decided as Gao’s successor.

The Free Navy’s declaration of war upon Earth is a shattering statement of intent – something no one on Earth or in the Belt would’ve thought possible. Marco rides the wave of momentum to galvanize support from other OPA factions, and suddenly becomes the most talked-about man of the Sol system. But while careful planning, circumstance and cunning all played a part in Marco’s victory, so too did a healthy dose of luck. When addressing his people, Marco admits that a single rock hitting Earth would’ve been a “triumph,” with a hat-trick more than he ever dared dream. Given how many asteroids Marco launched (9, based on the report he’s given) the accuracy rate is incredibly low, with 33% considered a miraculous win.

This would suggest that all Marco could do was toss the asteroids in Earth’s general direction and hope for the best. Chances were at least one of them would land, but considering how far out the rocks were launched, all of them could’ve missed too. Marco Inaros may not have been concerned about precision targeting because the sheer impact meant any successful strike to Earth’s surface would prove damaging. This is where Marco’s fortune really came into play. Two rocks hit highly populated areas, guaranteeing him a headline-grabbing death toll, while the other managed to wipe out a good chunk of the UN’s ruling government. It’s highly unlikely that Marco was aiming for Nancy Gao. Even if he somehow scored intelligence of where she’d be when the asteroids hit, he surely couldn’t aim the missiles well enough to guarantee hitting the Secretary General’s vicinity. If Marco could line up his attacks so exactly, every single rock would’ve landed, and he probably would’ve saved one for Luna, making sure to wipe out Avasarala.

As a leader, Marco is charismatic and opportunistic, as well as surprisingly organized for a Belter leader. But he also buys into his own hype, which could be the villain’s downfall. Wiping out Nancy Gao and Earth’s government makes the Free Navy look more threatening than they intended to be, inflating their reputation. Similarly, Marco’s strength is only possible thanks to a conspiracy playing out among the Martians, without which he’d be little better than any other disgruntled Belter. Once The Expanse’s heroes see through the cult of Marco Inaros, his weaknesses could become apparent.
